Abstract

Anemia is a widespread public health problem associated with increased mortality and morbidity, especially in pregnant women. In both developed and developing countries, some women experience anemia during pregnancy. Usually non-pregnant women have normal hemoglobin of 12-15%. According to WHO, the incidence of anemia in pregnancy ranges from 20% to 89% by setting HB <11 gr% (h/dl). The rate of anemia in pregnancy occurs 3.8% in the first trimester, 13.6% in the second trimester and 24.8% in the third trimester (Manuaba, 2012). The counseling method on preventing anemia by providing iron (Fe) to pregnant women is used in the community service program. The community service event was presented by twenty pregnant women from Bangun Rejo Village aged 20 to 35 years. After the counseling activity, pregnant women from Bangun Rejo Village understood more about anemia in pregnant women. This can be seen from the increase in their post-test scores compared to their pre-test. The pre-test results showed that most participants answered incorrectly, with an average score of 35; the post-test results showed an increase in knowledge, with an average score of 80. After attending the counseling and completing the post-test, the last participants underwent an Hb examination, which was guided by a gymnastics instructor and documented via video.

Abstract

In Bangun Rejo Village, Tanjung Morawa District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province, this community service project is to raise postpartum mothers' awareness of stunting prevention and promotion measures through exclusive breastfeeding by 2025. Breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of life can help avoid stunting, a chronic nutritional issue that affects children's physical and cognitive development. The phases of planning, carrying out, assessing, and reporting are all included in the implementation approach. In addition to giving postpartum moms educational media, educational activities are offered in the form of counseling, interactive conversations, and simulations of proper nursing procedures. Pre- and post-tests were used for evaluation in order to gauge participants' knowledge growth. According to the findings, postpartum moms now have a better awareness of the value of exclusive breastfeeding, appropriate nursing practices, and how they relate to preventing stunting. By enabling postpartum moms to nurse exclusively, this activity is anticipated to help lower stunting rates

Abstract

The counseling process requires engaging media to effectively enhance understanding and promote behavioral change within the target population. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of health counseling delivered through video and leaflet media on adolescents’ readiness to face menarche. A quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group was employed. The study population consisted of students in grades 4 to 6 at SDN 101816, totaling 136 individuals. From this population, 60 respondents were selected and divided equally into two groups: one group (n = 30) received counseling via video media, while the other group (n = 30) received counseling through leaflets. Results indicated that adolescents' readiness to face menarche increased following health counseling with video media, with mean scores rising from 26.47 pre-intervention to 31.20 post-intervention, representing an improvement of 4.73 points. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant effect of video-based counseling on readiness (p < 0.001). Similarly, counseling using leaflet media resulted in an increase in readiness, with mean scores improving from 24.73 before intervention to 27.10 after, an increase of 2.34 points, also statistically significant (p < 0.001). Furthermore, comparison between the two groups revealed a significant difference in the effectiveness of video versus leaflet counseling approaches, favoring video media (p = 0.002). These findings suggest that health workers should prioritize the use of engaging media, such as videos, in health promotion efforts aimed at preparing adolescents for menarche.

Abstract

Background: Optimal breast milk production meets infants’ nutritional needs, crucial in stunting prevention. Many postpartum mothers face insufficient milk production, which can affect infant weight gain and increase the risk of stunting. The innovation of combining oxytocin massage with Foxy Oil is expected to enhance breast milk volume, frequency of wet diapers, and infant weight gain—key indicators in stunting prevention. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with purposive sampling, involving 60 postpartum mothers: 30 in the intervention group and 30 in the control group. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 26 for univariate and bivariate data. Data normality was tested using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and bivariate analysis with the Mann-Whitney test. Breastfeeding optimisation was assessed based on breast milk volume, number of wet diapers, and infant weight over one month in the working area of Tanjung Morawa Community Health Centre. The husband or a close family member performed an Oxytocin massage twice daily for 10–15 minutes. Results: Bivariate analysis after oxytocin massage showed significant effects on breast milk volume (p = 0.000), number of wet diapers (p = 0.000), and infant weight (p = 0.039). The analysis indicates that the combination of Foxy Oil and oxytocin massage positively affects breast milk production, frequency of wet diapers, and infant weight gain. Conclusion: Foxy Oil's innovation, combined with oxytocin massage, can be widely applied in midwifery practice to support successful exclusive breastfeeding and contribute to stunting prevention.

Abstract

Background: Anemia in pregnancy remains a major cause of maternal complications, low birth weight, and stunting. Although iron–folic acid supplementation is widely implemented, there is a lack of culturally appropriate, food-based interventions using locally available ingredients that can sustainably improve hemoglobin levels in low-resource settings. This gap highlights the need for innovative, community-adaptable nutritional interventions that complement existing programs. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of Pisbro cookies (banana–broccoli cookies) in improving hemoglobin levels among pregnant women with anemia. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental two-group pretest–posttest design and followed the TREND reporting guideline. A purposive sampling method was used to recruit 40 pregnant women with mild–moderate anemia from the Sentosa Baru Health Centre, Medan. Inclusion criteria included: (1) confirmed anemia based on Hb examination, (2) gestational age 12–36 weeks, (3) willingness to participate for 30 days, (4) adherence to Fe tablet consumption. Exclusion criteria included pregnancy complications, chronic illness, allergies to ingredients, and incomplete follow-up. The intervention group received 5 Pisbro cookies/day for 30 days, while the control group received routine antenatal care without additional intervention. Hemoglobin levels were measured at baseline and after 30 days using a calibrated hemoglobin meter. Data were analyzed using an independent t-test at α = 0.05. Results: The intervention group showed an increase in mean hemoglobin levels from 9.56 ± 0.48 g/dL to 9.79 ± 0.51 g/dL, while the control group decreased from 9.62 ± 0.47 g/dL to 9.40 ± 0.50 g/dL. The difference between groups was statistically significant (p = 0.019), indicating a positive effect of Pisbro cookies on maternal hemoglobin levels. Conclusion: Pisbro cookies were effective in improving hemoglobin levels among pregnant women with anemia. As a low-cost, culturally acceptable food-based intervention using locally available ingredients, Pisbro has potential to complement maternal nutrition programs and support anemia and stunting prevention efforts.
