Abstract

The flute is a great source of inspiration in creating new musical instruments. The creation of the Gamelan Flute artwork was carried out to explore the source of ideas for flute instruments, which will then be realized in the form of creating a new set of musical instruments, developments from modified flute instruments with the aim of looking for updates to other forms, both in terms of visual form, technique and function. For this reason, there is a need for organological and musical innovation in the creation of music based on flute instruments. When trying to develop a new musical instrument, creators can take elements of the flute that they find interesting and combine them with creative ideas. By developing flute instruments or using modern technology in making instruments, artists can create unique and interesting sounds, providing a deeper artistic dimension and expressing themselves in new ways in their work. Understanding this cultural background and integrating it into the design of a new musical instrument can hopefully produce something unique and valuable.

Abstract

Sablon or screen printing has many functions and is usually more popular in the community for making t-shirts and banners and even batik cloth. The popularity of screen printing or screen printing, which is used by world-class artists, one of them Andy Warhol and also used by Marida Nasution, causes writers to feel inspired to work using this technique, because the technique is already popular in the community, making it easy to get tools and materials. To visualize this work, the author uses an art creation research methodology with an artistic creation process. The artistic creation process requires several stages to be passed, including experimentation, reflection and finally formation. The selection of these objects is indeed very interesting because these objects are increasingly disappearing in our lives. So that in this work, we try to marry or collaborate between modern art represented by graphic art with visual objects based on local wisdom that represent tradition. The paradigm of modern art with a touch of tradition as an effort to find the roots of the characteristics of Indonesia from year to year has begun to be explored by artists in Indonesia as an effort to find Indonesian cultural identity.Keyword: Sablon, Artistic Creative, Printmaking.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of Abu di Ateh Tunggua as a relational framework for understanding male position within the Minangkabau matrilineal kinship system. The role of the sumando has frequently been interpreted as a symbol of fragility or marginal status within customary structures. Using a qualitative, literature-based approach and conceptual analysis of customary norms, proverbial expressions, and the sumando typology, this study argues that Abu di Ateh Tunggua functions as an ethical metaphor that signifies responsibility, prudence, and relational awareness rather than structural subordination. In the Minangkabau context, men are not vested with proprietary authority within the wife’s lineage; instead, their legitimacy is grounded in moral obligations toward the nuclear family and the broader kin network. The article further identifies transformations in male roles in response to urbanization, education, and migration, highlighting ongoing negotiations between customary values and contemporary social change. These findings contribute to discussions of masculinity in matrilineal societies by demonstrating that authority may be constructed through social responsibility and collective recognition rather than ownership. The study underscores the importance of interpreting cultural expressions as analytical tools for examining power relations within indigenous kinship systems.

Abstract

This article investigates the structural translation of the Minangkabau performative tradition of randai into cinematic language through a practice-led research framework. Departing from representational or thematic adaptation, the study positions randai as an organizing principle that shapes the narrative architecture, temporality, and audiovisual rhythm of the film Rantau. Core performative elements, such as dendang, galombang transitions, episodic composition, circular staging, and the mediating function of the Janang, are operationalized as structural devices rather than ethnographic references. The article adopts practice led research approach, a reflective and cyclical creative process integrating observation, interviews, textual study, scripting, performance translation, and editing. Editing is conceptualized as an epistemological site where meaning emerges through montage, temporal layering, and audiovisual juxtaposition. The resulting film employs a dual narrative system, linear within performative segments and non-linear within cinematic sequence, producing stratified temporality that articulates generational reinterpretations of merantau (migration). The findings demonstrate that performative tradition can be translated structurally into contemporary film without hierarchical subordination. The study contributes to discourses on intermediality, artistic research, and decolonial aesthetics by repositioning tradition as a generative epistemic framework within audiovisual production, while proposing a model for culturally grounded cinematic innovation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze kato malereng as a form of indirect speech ethics in maintaining dignity and social hierarchy within Minangkabau society. In Minangkabau culture, language functions not only as a means of communication but also as a system of values that regulates social relationships and preserves community harmony. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a library research method to examine cultural communication practices within the kato nan ampek system. Data were collected through the analysis of relevant literature on communication ethics, cultural values, and the social structure of Minangkabau society and were analyzed using descriptive-interpretative techniques to identify the forms, functions, and social meanings of kato malereng. The findings indicate that kato malereng functions as a cultural communication mechanism that preserves dignity, prevents conflict, and strengthens social cohesion through the use of figurative and polite language. Despite adjustments in modern communication contexts, the values of politeness and respect embedded in kato malereng remain relevant as communication guidelines. Therefore, kato malereng represents a form of local wisdom that contributes to the preservation of cultural values and social stability in contemporary society.
