Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the types of language styles as part of linguistics. Here the focus of the study is language style. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach and the research design is observational analysis. The data is in the form of novel text and the data source is the novel The Little Prince by Antoine and Library Research. This research is based on the theory of Gorys Keraft 2020. In this researcher the author uses the novel The Little Prince by Antoine. Researchers found several problems, namely 2 problems, the first is which language style is the most dominant, the second is what types of language styles are found in the novel. In this novel, the most dominant language style is contradiction with 21 data with a percentage of 30%. There are four types of language styles used in the novel The Little Prince by Antoine, namely the first is comparative, the second is affirmation, the third is satire, and the last is contradiction. The number of sentences is 70 data in the novel The Little Prince. In research findings there are percentages and frequencies in the essay, in the first type of language style comparative 16 frequency and 23%, second affirmation 15 frequency and 20%, third satire 18 frequency and 25%, fourth 21 frequency and 30%. the total number of data is 70 and the percentage is 100%

Abstract

This research aims to describe: (1) What language styles are used in the movie "Cars 1." This type of research is qualitative in nature. The data subject in this research is the movie "Cars 1." The research object consists of comparative language styles and linkage language styles in "Cars 1" movie. The data source for this research is obtained through other individuals or documents. The data for this research are the analysis of comparative language styles and linkage language styles in "Cars 1" movie. Data are collected using library research techniques, reading techniques, note-taking techniques, and summarization techniques. The instrument used is the researcher themselves, assisted by data cards. The data analysis technique employed in this research is content analysis. Data validity is ensured through data triangulation.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of Busuu application on the listening skill of eight grade students at SMP Negeri 37 Medan. Research design in this study was an experimental quantitative research design, in one class and this research was conducted in SMP Negeri 37 Medan. The sample in this research was 29 students from class VIII H. Data obtained by doing listening test. After conducting the research and analyzed data, the writer concluded that the Busuu application can be effectively used as a medium for students’ listening skill, this was evidenced by the students' average scores in the pre-test and post-test. The results showed that the mean score increased from 68.10 in the pre-test to 81.20 in the post-test. It was discovered that the mean score for the post-test is greater higher than the mean score for the pre-test. α = 0.05 is the level of significance determined by the t-observed > t-table (20 > 1.701). This indicates that the alternative hypothesis (H_a) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H_o) is rejected. This means that the Busuu application can be effectively used as a medium for students’ listening skill of eight grade students at SMP Negeri 37 Medan.

Abstract

This study aims to determine (1) the social, moral, and educational values contained in the novel "Pollyanna" by Eleanor H. Porter. (2) the most dominant value of the three values found in the novel "Pollyanna" by Eleanor H. Porter. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data source is the novel "Pollyanna" by Eleanor H. Porter and the data is in the form of all the sentences in the novel. Data collection techniques in this research used library research, reading techniques, and note-taking techniques. Data analysis carried out in this study was in the form of classifying of data and describing data one by one in the form of paragraphs. The results of this research found that in the novel "Pollyanna" by Eleanor H. Porter there were 36 frequencies of types of social values with percentages (27.5%), 59 frequencies of moral values with presentations (45%), and 33 frequencies of educational values with presentations (27.5%). So of the three values contained in the novel "Pollyanna" by Eleanor H. Porter, the most dominant values in it are moral values with a frequency of 59 and presentation (45%).

Abstract

The aims of this research was to describe the students’ pronouncing fricative and affricate sounds through English songs. Many factors affect success or failure as a result of the teaching-learning process, especially in pronunciation. One of them is the environment or situation where and how is the teaching-learning process done. In many cases, the learning process is uninteresting because the technique used by the teacher, or the way the teacher delivers the materials is not attracting the students. This research was conducted at UPT SMP N 37 Medan. The population of this research was the XII grade students of academic year 2023/2024. There were 6 classes consisting of 180 students. The sample is divided into 1 class consisted of 30 students were taken by using random sampling technique. In completing the analysis, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative as the research method of the analysis. The instruments of collecting the data was a pronunciation test, recording, and transcribing. The results of this research showed that there are that the students excellent or good in pronouncing fricative sounds (14,7%) and almost correct or poor pronouncing affricate sounds (2,15%).

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk melakukan perubahan dan dampak yang baik bagi siswa, seperti meningkatnya kualitas literasi dan numerasi yang berkaitan dengan keterampilan membaca siswa, dan meningkatnya kualitas belajar perkalian, pembagian, pengurangan dan penjumlahan, yang mewadahi kegiatan bermain sambil belajar, memfasilitasi ruang baca, melakukan pendampingan belajar serta dan membantu beradaptasi di ruangan perpustakaan. Masing-masing peserta didik terlihat antusias dan sungguh-sungguh dalam pelaksanaan kegiatan. Peserta didik juga terdorong untuk aktif dan terdorong dirinya untuk memacu semangat dan motivasi belajar. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat pada SMP Negeri 8 Pematang Siantar adalah metode belajar kelompok. Metode belajar kelompok menitikberatkan kepada interaksi antara siswa dengan siswa lainnya dalam menyelesaikan tugas tugas secara bersama sama yang dibimbing oleh mahasiswa pengabdian kepada masyarakat.

Abstract

Writing is one of the important skills in studying English. Writing is an activity that is productive and expressive. The objectives of this research to identify the types of errors and most common errors made by the students’ in writing procedural text at SMA HKBP Sidorame. The research designed this study with mix qualitative and quantitative method with the data from students’ writing test. The findings show that: the dominant error were made by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Barru was selection. The total incorrect error was 121. It consisted of three kinds of error, namely committed 54 errors or 47%, Then, error in omission consists of 38 errors or 31%, and the last insertion consisted of 26 errors or 22%.

Abstract

In communication, people should be cooperative to avoid misunderstanding. Meanwhile, from the non-cooperation of Grice's theory of cooperative principle. Violating maxim means the speaker does not observe the maxim not in purpose. The flouting maxim implies that the speaker does not observe the maxim purposefully. This research analyzes the non-cooperative principle used by Podcast Dedy Corbuzier Scene Widi Viera-Cinta Laura. The researcher chooses this podcast because it can involves a conversation between a host and a guest star that discuss about a certain topic, the speaker might break the maxim of cooperative principle in delivering the message and providing information to the listener. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The present study aims 1) To find out flouting and violation maxim are used in Dedy Corbuzier’s YouTube Channel, and 2) To describe the reason why flouted and violation maxims occur in Podcast Dedy Corbuzier scene Widi Viera – Cinta Laura. The results that the researcher found are that out of 36 data, 14 were flouting a maxims, 22 were violation a maxims. From the result above, violation maxim was the most similar. Violating maxim means the speaker does not observe the maxim not in purpose , maxim quantity that cause speakers not to give enough information to a listener. Whereas in Flouting maxim happened because the speakers failed to obey maxim on purpose. Based on the data of flouting maxim of realtion most dominantly used that causes speakers want to change the topic and reveal the hidden meaning behind the utterances.

Abstract

Penelitian ini melihat keefektifan penggunaan metode audio-lingual, khususnya film berbahasa Inggris, untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menyimak siswa kelas enam. Teknik audio-media lingual adalah salah satu metode yang dapat digunakan siswa untuk memperoleh kemampuan menyimak. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menilai apakah menonton film berbahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menyimak siswa dan membantu mereka memenuhi ambang batas penguasaan minimum untuk pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini mengumpulkan data dengan menggunakan metode penelitian kuantitatif, yang meliputi lembar observasi dan tes. Penelitian ini menekankan nilai dari penggunaan media audio-lingual, seperti film berbahasa Inggris, untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mendengarkan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa metode ini dapat menjadi strategi alternatif yang efektif untuk mengajarkan kemampuan menyimak, meningkatkan minat dan motivasi siswa untuk belajar bahasa Inggris. Abstract

A Thesis The ability to use correct grammar in narrative writing is essential for students to express ideas clearly. The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze errors in the use of action verbs based on the surface strategy taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen. This research used descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of this study were fourteen eleventh-grade students of SMKS Immanuel Medan, and the instruments were students’ narrative writing tests and interviews. The data analysis followed Ellis’s theory of error analysis which includes identifying, describing, explaining, and evaluating. The findings showed that there were three types of errors, namely 226 (96.58%) misformation errors, 7 (2.99%) addition errors, and 1 (0.43%) misordering error, while no omission errors were found. Based on these results, it can be concluded that misformation was the most dominant type of error made by students in using action verbs. It is suggested that teachers provide more explicit instruction and practice in verb usage, while future researchers may use this study as a reference for further analysis in different text types.
