Abstract

The aging process can cause changes in physical, cognitive, and social aspects. Some seniors may experience memory problems, speech difficulties, or hearing difficulties. These factors can affect their ability to communicate effectively, especially in a medical environment that is often complex and full of technical terms. In addition to physical challenges, older adults may also face feelings of loneliness, social isolation, or feelings of being unappreciated. This study aimed to explore the principles and strategies of effective therapeutic communication in interacting with the elderly. The literature search process was carried out on various databases (PubMed, Web of Sciences, EMBASE, Cochrane Libraries, and Google Scholar) regarding therapeutic communication in the elderly. This study follows the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-Analysis (PRISMA) recommendations. Therapeutic communication with the elderly is a communication approach that is empathetic, caring, respects patient autonomy, and uses language that is simple, clear, and easy to understand. Honesty and openness in conveying information about health conditions and prognosis are also important. Avoid giving false hope, but keep focusing on efforts and steps that can be taken to improve the quality of life for the elderly.

Abstract

Introduction: Non-physical bullying, often subtle and insidious, poses a significant threat to adolescents' self-concept during a critical developmental period. This study investigates the prevalence and impact of non-physical bullying on adolescents' self-concept within the unique cultural context of Sausapor, Tambrauw Regency, West Papua, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among adolescents aged 12-17 years in Sausapor. Data were collected using validated questionnaires assessing non-physical bullying experiences and self-concept dimensions (self-esteem, self-efficacy, and body image). Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and regression analyses were employed to examine the relationship between non-physical bullying and self-concept. Results: The study revealed a significant prevalence of non-physical bullying in the Sausapor adolescent community, with verbal abuse and social exclusion being the most common forms. Non-physical bullying was significantly associated with lower self-esteem, reduced self-efficacy, and negative body image among adolescents. Regression analyses confirmed the detrimental impact of non-physical bullying on self-concept, even after controlling for sociodemographic factors. Conclusion: Non-physical bullying is a pervasive issue in Sausapor, with profound negative consequences for adolescents’ self-concept. Culturally sensitive interventions are urgently needed to prevent and address non-physical bullying, promote positive self-concept development, and foster a supportive environment for adolescents in this community.

Abstract

Surgical patients often experience psychological distress that can hinder their recovery. Mind-body interventions (MBIs) delivered by nurses, such as guided imagery and mindfulness exercises, may improve psychological well-being and surgical recovery. This meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of nurse-delivered MBIs on adult surgical patients. A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library databases was conducted from January 2013 to November 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effects of nurse-delivered MBIs on adult surgical patients were included. Primary outcomes were anxiety, depression, and pain. Secondary outcomes included length of hospital stay, postoperative complications, and medication usage. Random-effects models were used to calculate pooled effect sizes (Hedges' g). Six RCTs met the inclusion criteria, comprising 785 participants. Meta-analysis revealed that nurse-delivered MBIs significantly reduced anxiety (g = -4.09, 95% CI [-6.25, -1.93], p = 0.0002) and depression (g = -3.40, 95% CI [-4.96, -1.85], p < 0.00001) compared to standard care. Significant reductions in postoperative pain (g = -1.77, 95% CI [-2.10, -1.44], p < 0.00001) were also observed. No significant differences were found for length of hospital stay or postoperative complications. In conclusion, nurse-delivered MBIs effectively improve psychological well-being and reduce postoperative pain in adult surgical patients, supporting their integration into routine surgical care.

Abstract

Indonesia is ranked third globally in terms of the highest number of smokers, with adolescents being among the most at-risk groups. Social influences, including parenting style and peer pressure, are seen as major contributors to smoking behavior. This study aimed to examine the connection between parenting styles and peer influence with smoking behavior among students at SMK Negeri 3 Kota Sorong. A quantitative correlational approach using a cross-sectional design was employed. The study involved 77 students from grade XI selected through non-probability sampling. Questionnaires covering parenting styles, peer influence, and smoking behavior were used as research instruments. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. The results indicated no significant relationship between parenting style and smoking behavior (p = 0.770), but a significant relationship was found between peer influence and smoking behavior (p = 0.040). These findings suggest that peer influence plays a substantial role in adolescent smoking behavior, while parenting style does not show a significant effect. Peer-based interventions are therefore suggested to help reduce smoking rates among youth.

Abstract

Optimal dental and oral health is an important aspect in children's growth and development. However, in remote areas such as South Misool, Raja Ampat, access to dental health information and services is still limited. This encourages the need for community service to increase awareness and practice of maintaining dental and oral health in children. This community service was carried out at SD Negeri 15 Fafanlap involving 120 students in grades 1-6. The methods used include: (1) interactive education about dental and oral health, (2) demonstration and training on correct tooth brushing practices, (3) distribution of free brushes and toothpaste, (4) simple dental examinations, and (5) monitoring periodically for 6 months. After the intervention, there was a significant increase in students' knowledge about dental and oral health. The ability to brush teeth properly also increases rapidly, as indicated by a reduction in dental plaque. In addition, positive behavioral changes occurred with increased frequency of tooth brushing and use of fluoride toothpaste. This community service succeeded in increasing awareness, knowledge and practice of maintaining oral health among children at SD Negeri 15 Fafanlap. It is hoped that the continuation of the program and replication in other areas will have a wider impact on the dental and oral health of Indonesian children.
