Abstract

This Community Service (PKM) activity was carried out by lecturers and students of the Public Administration Study Program at Dehasen University, Bengkulu, in Taba Terunjam Village, Karang Tinggi District, Central Bengkulu Regency. The background to this activity was the low level of community participation in the Village Development Deliberation Forum (Musrenbangdes), where residents attended only around 20–30% of the invitations distributed, as well as the dominance of village officials in the decision-making process. The main objective of this activity was to increase awareness and active community involvement in democratic, transparent, and inclusive village development planning. The implementation method used a participatory approach through outreach activities, socialization, open discussions, and village deliberation simulations. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in the level of attendance and the courage of residents to express opinions, especially among youth and women. The village government also began to implement more open and participatory communication patterns. This activity demonstrated that an educational and collaborative approach between universities and the community can strengthen local democratic practices and good village governance. Thus, this PKM made a significant contribution to strengthening participatory culture and the sustainability of community-based development.

Abstract

Women play a crucial role in village development, encompassing economic, social, and educational aspects. However, in practice, women's involvement still faces various obstacles, ranging from limited market access and low digital technology proficiency to social problems such as high rates of early marriage. This article aims to describe the results of a Community Service (PkM) activity conducted by lecturers and students from Dehasen University, Bengkulu, in Hamlet 001, Pasar Pedati Village, Pondok Kelapa District, Central Bengkulu Regency. The activity was implemented using a participatory approach through observation, interviews, outreach, discussions, and joint solution formulation. The results showed that residents, especially women, were very enthusiastic and highly motivated to improve their capacity. The main problems identified included limited distribution of MSME products, the lack of business legality, low technological proficiency, and family social issues. The agreed-upon recommendations included digital marketing training, product licensing assistance, distribution support through university partners, and access to educational scholarships. This activity demonstrates that women's empowerment based on community participation and digital technology support has significant potential to improve the economic independence and quality of life of rural communities.

Abstract

This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to empower inmates at the Class II B Women's Correctional Institution (Lapas) in Bengkulu through interpersonal communication training, personality development, and independence. This program is motivated by the importance of increasing the social and psychological capacity of inmates so they can adapt positively, build self-confidence, and prepare themselves for social reintegration after the rehabilitation period ends. The implementation method of the activity uses an educational, participatory, and humanistic approach, which emphasizes the active involvement of participants in the training process through interactive lectures, group discussions, communication simulations, and self-reflection. The activity was attended by 40 female inmates and facilitated by a team of lecturers and students from Dehasen University Bengkulu in collaboration with the Prison. The results of the activity showed an increase in the inmates' ability to understand and apply the principles of effective interpersonal communication, such as active listening, managing emotions, and conveying messages empathetically. Participants also showed increased self-awareness, self-confidence, and motivation to improve themselves and build more harmonious social relationships. The evaluation of the activity showed that more than 90% of participants felt this activity was very useful and relevant to their needs during the rehabilitation period. This activity demonstrates the effectiveness of a communication-based and psychosocial empowerment approach in strengthening the character, personality, and independence of inmates. The program also emphasizes the crucial role of higher education institutions in supporting a humane and sustainable social rehabilitation process through synergy between academia and correctional institutions.

Abstract

The research titled “The Role of the Basic Education Division of the Bengkulu City Office of Education and Culture in Student Character Development (A Case Study at SMP Negeri 14 Bengkulu City)” aims to explain the implementation of character development through organizational functions, communication patterns, motivation and social influence, leadership, and organizational culture. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using Katz and Kahn’s (1978) theory, which views organizations as open social systems. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving the Basic Education Division of the Bengkulu City Office of Education and Culture as well as SMP Negeri 14 Bengkulu City. The findings show that the Office of Education plays a strategic role in providing guidance, supervision, and policy support to schools. The school acts as the primary implementer in instilling character values through habituation activities such as communal prayer, morning literacy, environmental cleanliness, and religious programs. Communication between the office and the school is effectively established through both formal and informal channels, allowing coordination to run smoothly. Work motivation grows from a shared spirit and a sense of responsibility toward improving educational quality. The leadership style applied is participatory, open to new ideas, and emphasizes role modeling. The organizational culture that emerges reflects values of discipline, responsibility, cooperation, religiosity, and social concern as the foundation for character education. The research findings indicate that character development at SMP Negeri 14 Bengkulu City is effectively implemented due to the alignment between policy formulation and field implementation. The synergy between the Office of Education and the school forms an adaptive, participatory, and character-oriented working system that strengthens students’ values, discipline, and sense of responsibility.
