Abstract

Objective:  This study aims to analyze the research trends, characteristics, and development patterns of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics integrated with the Engineering Design Process (STEM-EDP) in Science Education from 2016 to 2025. Method: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) combined with bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOSviewer. A total of 101 articles indexed in the Springer database were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The analysis focused on annual publication trends, keyword frequency, research methods, authorship patterns, geographical distribution, citation rankings, and journal productivity. Results: The findings indicate a consistent upward trend in STEM-EDP publications, with a projected peak in 2025. Qualitative research methods dominate the field (80.19%), reflecting the exploratory nature of STEM-EDP studies. Single-authored publications are most common, while the Americas—particularly the United States—contribute the highest number of publications. The most cited authors are Kelly C. Margot and Todd Kettler (179 citations). The International Journal of Technology and Design Education is identified as the most productive journal. Keyword mapping reveals that STEM-EDP remains in an emerging research cluster, frequently associated with project-based learning and creative thinking. Novelty: This study provides a comprehensive bibliometric mapping specifically focused on STEM-EDP within Science Education using the Springer database for the 2016–2025 period. Unlike previous reviews that examined general STEM research, this study highlights the distinct integration of the Engineering Design Process and identifies emerging thematic directions and methodological gaps for future research.

Abstract

Abstract

Online learning requires students to study independently and manage lectures according to the time set. Researchers need to know the criteria for self-regulated learning of first-year students at the Physics Education Department. This paper aims to determine self-regulated learning during online learning. The study used a quantitative research approach with a survey method. The Online Self-Regulated Learning Questionnaire (OLSQ) collected the data, a 20-item scale with a 5-point Likert-type response format. The sample of this study was 131 students of physics and chemistry education study programs. Each was randomly selected to see how their respective study programs implemented independent learning activities during online learning. The results showed that each indicator of independent learning in online learning received a positive response through the OLSQ instrument that had been distributed. The disciplined behavior indicator has a higher percentage, followed by the exercise self-control indicator. Generally, the pre-service students have self-regulated learning with high criteria. This result can provide a good contribution and open for further research. The implication of this research can be a reference for lecturers to improve online and self-regulated learning quality.

Abstract

This research analyses the impact of writing to learn strategies on students' critical thinking and science communication skills, particularly on light and sound waves. The research employed a quasi-experimental approach, utilising a nonequivalent control group design. The study involved students from a high school in Palembang, with 32 participants in the experimental group and 32 in the control group. Before being tested on students, the critical thinking skills test items and science communication item sheets were evaluated by three experts. The research used pretest and posttest scores to assess the enhancement of students' cognitive abilities and critical thinking skills. The results showed that the experimental class showed significantly higher essential thinking abilities than the control class. The calculation of Cohen's d effect size is 1.5, which is included in the large category. The results of the analysis show that the test items can be used to test students. The results showed that students in the experimental class wrote conclusions well, but some wrote them less clearly due to repetition. The study concluded that the writing to learn approach effectively improved students' critical thinking skills, indicating that the writing to learn strategy can be an effective learning method. These findings suggest that integrating writing-based approaches in physics instruction can support the development of 21st-century skills. For future education practice, the test items can be combined with education technology, like flipbooks, to assess the development of students' critical thinking and communication skills

Abstract

Technology literacy is a crucial competency in addressing digital transformation and the challenges of 21st-century learning. This study aims to analyze research trends in technology literacy within the field of education, particularly in STEM learning, through a bibliometric approach using VOSviewer. Data were collected from international publication databases for the period 2021–2025 using the keywords technology literacy, digital literacy, and STEM education. The analysis identified five main research clusters: (1) effects and impacts (effect, impact, relationship), (2) learning contexts and student engagement (student engagement, experience, perception), (3) digital adoption and mechanisms (adoption, tool, competency, mechanism), (4) sustainability and management (sustainability, management, industry), and (5) emerging technological innovations (virtual reality, healthcare, engineering, artificial intelligence). The findings indicate that technology literacy is not only associated with pedagogical practices and student learning in STEM but also extends to sustainability, industry, and advanced technologies. This broader scope highlights the novelty of this study, showing how technology literacy connects education with global technological advancements. The study provides valuable insights for academics and practitioners in developing adaptive and future-oriented learning strategies aligned with educational needs and technological change.

Abstract

Current technological developments require the education sector to engage in continuous innovation to advance the quality of future generations. Coding and artificial intelligence are forms of innovation that can be integrated into learning activities. To equip students with these skills, this community service program aims to introduce and train students in the use of simple block coding through the use of 4.0 applications. The training and community service activities were carried out over a period of 3 months with a target of 25 junior high school students in Tanjung Baru Village. The training was carried out through a series of activities, namely (a) conducting a preliminary test; (2) delivering material on the use of block coding for learning, the use of the Pictoblox 4.0 application, and the creation of simple games and chatbots; and (3) conducting a final test. The N-gain percentage result was 89.5%. This percentage is high, indicating that there is a significant effect on improving students' computational thinking skills. The implementation of this activity had a positive impact on the training participants. This is demonstrated by the evaluation results, which indicate that this community service activity will continue with other innovative activities. The implication of this community service activity is to provide innovative coding and artificial intelligence learning activities that are integrated into the curriculum.
