Abstract

In this current era, the use of technology in daily activities is not something new for Indonesian people. Almost all activities in various fields already use technology, especially in education. In education, technology is very necessary as a reform effort that can stimulate students' abilities in the learning process to be more effective and efficient. The use of technology in learning can be used when preparing and even using learning media. The aim of this research is to describe the effect of using the Canva and Quizizz applications as digital multimodal texts in improving students' literacy skills. This research uses mixed methods. Data collection was obtained through 2 stages, namely a questionnaire to obtain quantitative data and interviews to obtain qualitative data for 10 grades students at Panjura High School Malang, total 89 students. Researchers used SPSS 26.0 and Microsoft Excel to process research data. The results of this research show that digital multimodal texts have positive influence on students' literacy skills in learning English. This is proven by the highest average score for each indicator, an average of 3.12 on the audio/video indicator; 3.22 on visual design; 3.16 on expression and voice; 3.18 on gestures and 2.99 on spatial position. In terms of implementation, students' motivation and enthusiasm for literacy in learning English increases due to the use of appropriate and innovative learning media.Keywords: Digital multimodal texts; students’ literacy skills; Canva; Quizizz

Abstract

Developing teacher competency is an essential thing that must be done both from internal and external encouragement. To contribute to the field of education, the community service team of English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya held teacher professional development training in the use of multimodal literacy in learning at SMP Negeri 27 Surabaya. The selection of the school was made in accordance with the collaboration agreement that both sides had drafted. The method used was a workshop held in 2 days with stages (1) Needs analysis, (2) First training; speakers' material delivery, (3) Second training; application usage practice, and (4) Evaluation; product creation by participants and contested. This activity provides a positive impact on teacher skills in preparing and carrying out lessons utilizing multimodal-based media in order to meet the needs of diverse learning styles of students and increase students' enthusiasm for learning.

Abstract

This community service program was conducted to improve children's literacy skills in Tajinan Village, Malang Regency through various engaging educational activities. The main problems identified were low reading interest among children and lack of parental understanding about the importance of literacy for their children's future. The method used was a participatory approach where students collaborated with the community, youth organizations, and teachers during the period of July 9 to August 7, 2025. The main programs implemented included awareness of the prominent of literacy, a literacy competition entitled "Gema Literasi Anak (Literacy Awareness for Children)" comprising poems on local culture, education on the prevention of sexual violence and bullying, basic English courses, educational film screenings, social media content training for youth organizations, and waste management workshops. Program results showed high enthusiasm from children with active participation in every activity, increased reading interest, and development of their creativity in writing poetry about local folklore. The program also successfully raised high school students' awareness about the importance of continuing higher education and developed digital literacy skills among young villagers. Positive impacts were impacted not only by children but also by parents who began supporting literacy activities at home. In conclusion, university students proved to be effective bridges between the academic world and rural communities in building sustainable literacy culture.
