Data were obtained through observations and interviews of second semester students who took literal reading courses and who had high grades in the first semester. Results/Findings The results showed that the undergraduate EFL students in a public university used cognitive strategies, compensatory strategies and social strategies. These undergraduate students’ reading strategies can affect reading comprehension based on the results of observations, self-efficacy affects reading comprehension. The interview results show that reading strategies used by the students in this study affect their English improvement in terms of English comprehension. Students have high self-efficacy in comprehending different English texts. Implications The evidence of this study identifies that it is very important to apply strategies that are appropriate to the characteristics of students especially those that encourage students' self-efficacy in learning. With high self-efficacy, students can improve their reading comprehension. Lecturers and teachers can also consider it as a reference in teaching reading strategies in class and student efficacy.

Maintaining the sustainability of oral culture is a necessity amidst the onslaught of the modern era that threatens its survival. This research focuses on investigating how the Kajang indigenious people maintain and continue to perform kelong jaga only through word of mouth as in Yugoslavia (Lord, 1981). The author analyzed the data using a descriptive qualitative approach. Performance recordings and interviews with experienced performers, traditional rulers, and locals comprised the data. The result shows 3 phases. This begins at an early age by listening and absorbing to the kelong jaga to be familiar with the words, tempo, sound, and so on; then next phase is practicing, learners practice the kelong jaga during their leisure time. They would usually gather in a little shelter in the middle of a rice field to act out kelong jaga; and the last phase is performing in front of real audience.

Abstract

The implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesian vocational education mandates a shift toward instructional autonomy and industry-aligned pedagogy. In fact, the transition from standardized English instruction to contextualized English for Specific Purposes (ESP) remains uneven across different institutional frameworks. This study aims to investigate how vocational English teachers integrate students’ needs and industry demands into curriculum development within the public and private school sectors. Following a qualitative case study design, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis involving five English teachers in Parepare, South Sulawesi. The findings indicate that while all participants attempt to synchronize their instruction with vocational requirements, their pedagogical agency is heavily mediated by institutional resources. Teachers in public schools demonstrate a designer approach, utilizing collaborative networks to develop customized modules. In contrast, private school teachers often adopt a consumer approach, relying on standardized textbooks while employing spontaneous improvisation to maintain classroom relevance. This study suggests that teacher agency is not merely an individual capacity but a situated achievement facilitated by professional learning communities. These results imply that policymakers must provide targeted material support and formalized collaborative time, particularly for resource-constrained private institutions, to ensure equitable curriculum innovation.

Abstract

The urgency of this research lies in the fact that Illocutionary Speech Acts used in online classrooms via Zoom meetings by teachers and students need to be understood to improve the effectiveness of virtual learning communication. This study examines illocutionary speech acts used by teachers and students in online classrooms conducted through Zoom meetings. The research is important because online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic changed classroom communication patterns and influenced how teachers and students interacted virtually. Understanding speech acts in online classrooms can help improve communication effectiveness in digital learning environments. This study applied a mixed-method approach combining quantitative and qualitative analysis. The population of the study consisted of utterances produced by teachers and students in an online classroom video uploaded on YouTube. The sample was selected purposively from a 57-minute online classroom interaction involving ninth-grade students. The research instrument was a transcription sheet based on the video subtitles. Data were collected through observation, watching the video repeatedly, transcribing the utterances, and classifying the data based on Searle’s taxonomy of illocutionary speech acts. The data were analyzed quantitatively by calculating the percentage of each speech act type and qualitatively by interpreting the functions of the utterances in the classroom context. The findings revealed that all five types of illocutionary speech acts were found in the online classroom interaction: assertive (50%), directive (34%), declarative (8%), expressive (6.9%), and commissive (1.1%). The study implies that assertive and directive speech acts play dominant roles in maintaining interaction and delivering information in online learning. In conclusion, online classroom communication through Zoom meetings involves various illocutionary speech acts, with assertive speech acts being the most frequently used by teachers and students.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the effectiveness of Contextual Redefinition Strategy and to increase the students’ reading skill. This research employed quasi-experimental design by using nonequivalent control group design since control group and experiment group were not chosen randomly. There were two variables, namely independent variable (independent variable was the use of Contextual Redefinition Strategy) and dependent variable (The dependent variable was the students’ reading skill). The population of this research was the second grade students of MA Bontomarannu  which consists of 28 students, 16 students as experimental group and 12 students as control group. The sample  were taken by using total sampling technique. The instrument of this research was a reading test used in pre-test and post-test. The result of the data indicated that there was no significant difference between the students who are taught by using Contextual Redefinition Strategy from those who are taught by using conventional method.  The mean score of post-test (69.03) in experimental group was greater than the mean score of post-test (64.70) in controlled group. The value of t-test (1.568) was lower than t-table (2.048) at the level of significance 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 26. Therefore, hypothesis H0 was accepted and H1 was rejected. Based on the finding and discussion of the research, the researcher concluded that the teacher’ use of Contextual Redefinition Strategy does not improve the students’ reading comprehension at the Second grade Students of MA Bontomarannu Takalar
