Abstract

This study aims to examine the potential of kakawihan barudak (traditional Sundanese children's songs) as teaching materials in literary appreciation learning with a structural and ethnopedagogic approach in the Lembang District. This study used a qualitative descriptive method and successfully identified 50 kakawihan that are still alive in the community's oral tradition. Of these, 20 kakawihan were analyzed in depth based on the external structure which includes diction, imagery, concrete words, and purwakanti, as well as the internal structure which includes theme, feeling, tone, and mandate. In addition, ethnopedagogic values such as pengkuh agamana, luhur elmuna, jembar budayana, and rancagé gawéna were also found in the content of the kakawihan. The results of the study indicate that kakawihan are not only aesthetically rich, but also contain character education values and local culture that are relevant for 21st-century learning. Kakawihan barudak has been proven to be able to improve 4C skills (critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication) and can be used as a contextual, enjoyable learning medium, and strengthen cultural identity. This study recommends the use of kakawihan in Sundanese literature learning in elementary and secondary schools to enrich local culture-based learning strategies.

Abstract

Learning to write Sundanese descriptive texts presents several challenges, particularly in the limited availability of engaging and contextualized learning media. Students often lack real-life experiences related to the objects they are asked to describe, and the absence of interactive media contributes to the low quality of their descriptive writing. This study aims to analyze the needs for Virtual Reality media to enhance students’ skills in writing Sundanese descriptive texts at the junior high school level. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this research. The participants included 8 Sundanese language teachers and 145 junior high school students from Bandung City. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews conducted during the 2024/2025 academic year. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative techniques involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that students’ ability to write Sundanese descriptive texts remains relatively low, primarily due to the lack of innovative and immersive learning media. Teachers also face challenges in providing learning experiences that allow students to observe or visualize descriptive objects directly. Virtual Reality shows potential as a promising solution, offering immersive, simulated environments that help students gain contextual understanding. These findings suggest that the development of Virtual Reality media is urgently needed to support students’ learning needs in writing Sundanese descriptive texts. Furthermore, this study serves as a foundation for future research focusing on the design and effectiveness of Virtual Reality-based learning media in enhancing descriptive writing skills in Sundanese language education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the readability levels of Sundanese language textbooks for eighth-grade junior high school students using Fry’s Readability Graph. The research employed a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through document analysis by examining the discourses contained in the textbooks. The objects of this study were the Rancagé Diajar Basa Sunda Grade VIII textbook published by Pustaka Jaya and the Wiwaha Basa Grade VIII textbook published by Geger Sunten. Data analysis was conducted using the Fry Graph formula by calculating the average number of sentences and syllables per 100 words, which were then plotted on the Fry Graph to estimate the readability levels of the texts. The results indicate that the Rancagé Diajar Basa Sunda textbook falls within the readability range of grades 5–7, whereas the Wiwaha Basa textbook falls within the range of grades 6–8, making it more appropriate for the expected reading ability of eighth-grade students. These findings provide valuable insights for teachers and textbook authors to pay greater attention to linguistic features and text structure in the development of instructional materials. Consequently, this study contributes to improving the quality of Sundanese language textbooks and supports more effective learning that is aligned with students’ reading abilities.
