Abstract

This study identifies challenges perceived by Indonesian students of English as a Foreign Language in Oracy in Academic Context classes as well as possible causes of the problems. This subject was a new addition to the 2018 curriculum of the English Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty at XXX University in Indonesia. The findings show the main problems students faced related to speaking issues, for example, lack of self-confidence, fear of making mistakes, ineffective class schedule, annoying audience behaviour, lack of vocabulary, lack of grammatical precision, poor pronunciation, difficult and uninteresting topics, direct or immediate corrective feedback, and problems coordinating group work. The students also pointed out that as listeners they perceived difficulties due to their lack of adequate background knowledge, unfamiliar vocabularies, anxiety, speakers’ poor pronunciation, too fast or too long presentations, accents, clarity of the sound, seat positioning, room temperature, lack of concentration, and indifferent speakers. Based on analysis of the data, these problems are induced by several factors which include lack of linguistic proficiency, variable cognitive competencies, physical conditions, and most prominently psychological, social and emotional challenges. A set of recommendations to address these issues is also presented in the following paper.

Abstract

This current study aimed to investigate rural college EFL students’ experiences in dealing with English research paper writing and publication barriers. Five senior EFL students voluntarily participated in a photovoice phenomenological study. The data were collected through two methods, including semi-structured interviews and a photovoice. The students took some emotional photos to express their feeling on paper writing and publication barriers visually. The interviews encouraged them to describe their experiences and feelings through the photos. The data were analyzed by synchronizing each photo with its qualitative description. As for the results, it is noted that there were three main paper writing and publication barriers, including a lack of linguistic competence, being trapped with a journal template, and anxiety towards written corrective feedback. Each interview result was accomplished with emotional photos in several themes such as untidy pieces of paper, scenery, internet search, children’s toys, colourful pens, and empty box. The photos were also supported by qualitative remarks of each EFL student. In short, the photovoice helps to represent deep feelings on the research paper writing and publication barriers experienced by the EFL students.

Abstract

This research took a closer look at data from an Indonesian public university database that showed that, as of November 2022, 14,44% of English department final-year students from 2017 in a teacher training and education faculty were still working on their theses. Data was gathered through qualitative research using document analysis and interviews to examine the topics, methodologies, and students' experiences writing an undergraduate thesis. The findings showed that the students' theses covered seven topics: teaching and learning, English skills, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, translation, content analysis, and research and development (R & D). This research found factors contributing to students' challenges in completing their thesis writing during the COVID-19 pandemic, including students' relationships with supervisors, failure to focus, lack of motivation, and difficulties locating relevant references. Additionally, the students used several strategies to help finish their theses on time, for example, setting specific goals, having a study partner, and reading various related sources. This research adds to the body of knowledge on undergraduate students' difficulties and the strategies used in completing their theses during the pandemic. This research is expected to provide insight into possible interventions to assist students in overcoming the difficult task of writing a thesis, primarily when most of the research process is still online.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the implications of empiricism theory in the development of professionalism among elementary school teachers. This study is qualitative and employs a literature review method. The research seeks sources related to the empiricism movement concerning the development of professionalism among elementary school teachers. The sources for this research include books, research articles, and other supporting documents. The results of this study indicate that the empiricism movement brings a different nuance to the world of education in developing the professionalism of teachers, especially in elementary schools. This movement provides a foundation of responsibility for teachers regarding the nature of every learning practice in elementary schools through their senses. Thus, it fosters a good and accurate understanding of the needs of students, and it is hoped that students will acquire knowledge based on their experiences. The perspective of empiricism in the development of teacher professionalism also provides direction and fundamental guidelines for efforts to improve, advance, and establish a solid foundation for maintaining education.

Abstract

This study investigates the epistemological foundations and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) principles underpinning the teaching and learning of Indonesian for foreign speakers (BIPA). Using a systematic literature review (SLR) approach, this research analyzed 16 studies on BIPA instructions published between 2020 and 2024 involving the identification of inclusion and exclusion criteria relevance to epistemology, SLA theories, and BIPA teaching. The methodology approach followed SLR guidelines by Evans Pearson (2001) including database searching employing Scopus or Google Scholar, and critically evaluated the chosen studies. To be in line with the theoretical frameworks and practical teaching strategies, data extraction placed a focus on epistemological methods and SLA issues. The results indicate that BIPA instructions in the selected articles align with the epistemology methods of empiricism, rationalism, constructivism, pragmatism, and hermeneutic, supporting SLA principles, such as language environment, comprehensible input, the roles of the first or second language, internal processing, and individual learner differences. Crucially, the study showed the other significant aspect that mostly in the selected articles yielded the importance of including Indonesian cultures in the teaching and learning BIPA process. This study improves BIPA instruction field by highlighting cultural literacy as fundamental in BIPA teaching and suggests its involvement as a learning strategy for language acquisition.
