Abstract

The primary objective of this current investigation was to provide a detailed account of the experiences of English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners in their response to Written Corrective Feedback (WCF). Additionally, the study aimed to explore the preferences of these learners regarding the utilization of WCF in their thesis writing within the context of a rural Islamic higher education institution. The participants of this study consisted of twenty-two senior EFL learners who were in the process of writing their theses as their final projects. To gather the necessary data, semi-structured interviews were extensively utilized. The findings of this study revealed that EFL learners employed various strategies when responding to WCF, including a focus on grammatical error correction, an emphasis on overall error correction, the utilization of online grammar checkers, and seeking guidance from their supervisors. Furthermore, the learners' perception of WCF included their preferences, disfavored aspects, advantages, and disadvantages. These results indicate that EFL learners are expected to engage in intensive learning of grammar and writing. Additionally, it is crucial to establish standardized approaches to providing WCF. In conclusion, WCF proves to be a valuable tool for EFL learners in their thesis writing endeavors.

Abstract

The focus of the research is the development of the subject "Islam and Religious Moderation" in Islamic Education study program at IAIN Kerinci and learning tools, namely Rencana Pembelajaran Semester (RPS, Semester Learning Plan) and course syllabus. In conducting the research, the research and development (R&D) approach is used as a basic reference for developing lecture programs through observation or survey methods, trials and classroom actions. From the results and research analysis, it can be concluded that in the development of a course there are several things that must become the product of development including the course structure, RPS, syllabus, and course-teaching materials of course. In terms of the development of the Islamic and Religious Moderation course based on the Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka (MBKM, Independent learning – Independent campus) program, theoretical and practical analysis of the guidelines, instructions, and implementation of religious moderation and MBKM is needed. The product development courses are further refined through validation by curriculum and religious education experts and theoretical validation through journal articles of international repute as comparisons.

Abstract

Learners must construct a learning identity to succeed when learning English. This current study attempted to discuss English language learners’ (ELLs) insights on language learning identity construction. A survey study collected quantitative data from 219 ELLs in several Indonesian universities. Questionnaires were distributed and completed via online mode (i.e., Google Forms), and a two-week due time was assigned for each participant. As for results, various insights emerged as the ELLs recognized their identity construction. They have identity aspects such as linguistics, belongingness, expectation, attitude, and agency. Each aspect helped to form ELLs’ identity construction in many ways, including learning competence, socio-cultural awareness, educational component, and psychological conviction. Identity construction is not complicated to achieve as long as ELLs have strong learning commitment. In addition, it is implied that this study is paramount to empower pedagogical strategies, educational policies, and academic performance.

Abstract

Teacher support (henceforth TS) in EFL classrooms emerges as psychological empowerment for non-English major students (henceforth NEMS), even though not all EFL teachers are aware of such communicative interaction. Grounded on the rationale, this current study investigated how the EFL teachers contributed to the English skill development of students who did not engage with English majors. A total of 279 students from various majors voluntarily participated in an online survey, ensuring that they selected appropriate perceptions. The findings disclosed that the EFL teachers had both positive and negative contributions towards NEMS English learning experiences. However, such imbalanced supports seemed to be randomly performed by different teachers in different contexts, meaning that similar EFL teachers treated students’ English learning differently when they were influenced by other factors, such as students’ difficulty level or teacher competence. In short, it is believed that TS leads to NEMS positive attitude and understanding towards English skills. A recommendation is highly expected to configure how every EFL teacher determines academic or social support for all NEMS in the current and future EFL classrooms.

Abstract

English learning is applied in schools to develop students' knowledge, language skills, and positive attitudes towards English. The skills in learning English that should be mastered are: a) listening, b) speaking, c) reading, and d) writing. The four types of skills have different levels of knowledge, so they can be taught in different ways. To master these four skills, students must first master the language component, also known as language-focused learning, which consists of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. The problems experienced by students of SMA Negeri 4 Sungai Penuh in learning English include (1) Students' understanding of English language material is still lacking, (2) lack of guidance on the essential components of learning English, (3) still lack practical activities in learning English and (4) decreasing students' interest in learning English. The methods implemented are the lecture method, cooperative learning, student-centered learning, and interaction methods. The results of community service show that the students of SMA Negeri 4 Sungai Penuh get an increase in knowledge, which can be seen from the results of the pre-test in the poor category and the post-test results in the medium category. From these results, the Community Service team concluded that language-focused learning-based English assistance increased students' interest in learning English. They already have a basic knowledge of English based on language-focused learning to improve the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This community service activity is expected to provide broad insight for students and the school, especially in learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to describe novice teachers’ insights regarding classroom management in rural schools. This Study employed a descriptive method through which the researchers determined a written instrument to be fulfilled. A total of eighty three teachers with various majors (i.e., Math, Biology, English, Physics, Economy, Art, Religion, Counselling, and Sport) were involved in a survey study. Through an online survey, a questionnaire was sent to the participants via email and WhatsApp platform. Collected data were analyzed through a descriptive statistical analysis where means and percentages were used to indicate response estimation. The findings shows that there were eight indicators of rural teachers’ classroom managements, including seating arrangement, student teacher relationship, time management, use of writing board, classroom norms, conducive environment, appropriate instructional techniques, and feedback. From all of them, the teachers encountered barriers in terms of feedback, and use of writing board. It is noticed that novice rural school teachers performed positive attitudes on time management, relationship with students, and norms applied in the classroom. This current study implies that there should be an educational policy that leads the teachers to manage their classrooms as effective as they could.

Abstract

It is undeniable that oral traditions such as prohibitive expressions not only lead to careful attitude, but also presents identities as Muslim societies. While their existence remains controversial in Islamic perspectives, more societies believe in their function and contribution over safety, effectiveness, and discipline in a particular situation. Meanwhile, this study investigated oral traditions regarding prohibitive expressions that protect societies from any hazard during pregnancy, babies and child, and marriage. Intensive interviews were employed to collect data from a number of participants selected through purposive sampling. As for results, it is believed that the prohibitive expressions comprised some contexts such as during pregnancy, for babies and child, and marriage. Each expression was a mixture between traditional culture or local wisdom and Islam as a religion with strict rules. Although the expressions were not identified to emerge in Islamic context as a whole, the societies presumably believed in religious supports that allow them to practice the local wisdom without avoiding Islam

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the effectiveness of Experiential Learning (EL) model in improving prospective EFL teachers (PETs) teaching competence. The method of this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of planning, observing, acting, and reflecting phases. There were two cycles needed in implementing EL to the twenty one EFL learners as the participants. The results revealed that each subcompetence in cycle I and cycle II was achieved in the following score: planning & preparation for learning (Mean in cycle I=2,8; Mean in cycle II=3,38), classroom management (Mean in cycle I=2,5; Mean in cycle II=2,95), delivery of instruction (Mean in cycle I=2,6; Mean in cycle II=2,90), and monitoring, assessment, and follow-up (Mean in cycle I=2,4; Mean in cycle II=2,95). It can be concluded that EL is effective in improving PETs’ teaching competence.
