Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the attitudes and types of metaphorical perceptions of male and female prospective English teachers (PETs) towards their English learning process. Elicitation sheet with the prompt “English learning is (like) … because …†was used to collect the data. The data were qualitatively analyzed by listing, naming, categorizing, and determining the metaphors. The results of the elicited metaphors reveal that male and female PETs’ attitudes towards English learning process include positive, negative, ambivalent, and neutral perceptions. Both male and female PETs viewed English learning in different attitudes. Male PETs generated more negative attitudes than the positive ones, while female PETs produced more positive attitudes than the negative ones. The findings also show that the metaphors were categorized into several types such as enjoyable activity, construction work, movement/journey, experience, planting/farming, exploration, and things. These types of metaphor imply the importance of the socio-cultural background of the learners. In conclusion, the metaphors help to determine appropriate strategies, methods, and materials for English teaching and learning.

Abstract

This paper contains a discussion of the structures of Adjacency Pairs as uttered in the conversations of Lost in Translation movie script in terms of conversational analysis study. A conversation consists of at least two turns and two utterances which contain two acts of speech. Such utterances consisting of a first pair part which is followed by a second pair part form adjacent pairs which can be either preferred or dispreferred responses. Adjacency Pairs in term of preferred responses include twenty eight structures, while those in term of dispreferred responses include fourteen structures. The choice of a variety of responses is influenced by habits and cultures through which speakers convey meaning. Different habits and cultures of the speakers allow them to produce particular utterances which contain particular acts of speech. Subjectivity and intention influence the second speaker to respond the first speaker’s act based on what is intended. This is psychologically subjective rather than illogical. The complex structures of Adjacency Pairs are also caused by noises, unclear voices, and complex sentence patterns. The variations of adjacent pairs are basically contextual and situational which imply that Adjacency Pairs emerge in different structures within different contexts of conversations.          Keywords: Adjacency pairs, turn taking, conversation, speech act, utterance PASANGAN BERDAMPINGAN PADA UJARAN PERCAKAPAN DI NASKAH FILM LOST IN TRANSLATION KARYA SOFIA COPPOLAAbstrakArtikel ini berisi pembahasan tentang pola Pasangan Berdampingan berdasarkan ujaran percakapan pada naskah filem Lost in Translation melalui teori analisis percakapan. Percakapan terdiri atas dua giliran and ujaran yang mengandung dua tindak tutur. Ujaran-ujaran yang terdiri atas bagian berdampingan pertama dan diikuti bagian berdampingan kedua sehingga membentuk pasangan berdampingan baik dengan respon yang diharapkan maupun yang tidak diharapkan. Abstract

This study aimed to measure types, levels, and perceptions towards the application of humor as a supporting material in EFL classrooms. One hundred and thirteen rural school EFL students were involved as the participants of this mixed-methods study. As for quantitative results, humor was revealed to have positive influence on EFL students’ learning development by facilitating the lesson and encouraging learning enthusiasm. Although some aspects of L2 humor were not believed to be helpful, other aspects such as modelling English use and usage and authentic materials proved that such L2 humor was advantageous. Meanwhile, interview results showed that L2 humor was considered paramount that it helped to progress English learning, improve learning strategies, and increase motivation. The combination between both results prove that L2 humor is not only entertaining, but also prospective for those who expect a more realistic or knowledgeable material that does not cause stress or anxiety in learning English, particularly in a rural context. In addition, this study was limited on quantitative and qualitative perceptions, but it did not attempt to implement L2 humor through an action research.

Abstract

This current study aimed to investigate rural college EFL students’ experiences in dealing with English research paper writing and publication barriers. Five senior EFL students voluntarily participated in a photovoice phenomenological study. The data were collected through two methods, including semi-structured interviews and a photovoice. The students took some emotional photos to express their feeling on paper writing and publication barriers visually. The interviews encouraged them to describe their experiences and feelings through the photos. The data were analyzed by synchronizing each photo with its qualitative description. As for the results, it is noted that there were three main paper writing and publication barriers, including a lack of linguistic competence, being trapped with a journal template, and anxiety towards written corrective feedback. Each interview result was accomplished with emotional photos in several themes such as untidy pieces of paper, scenery, internet search, children’s toys, colourful pens, and empty box. The photos were also supported by qualitative remarks of each EFL student. In short, the photovoice helps to represent deep feelings on the research paper writing and publication barriers experienced by the EFL students.

Abstract

The primary objective of this current investigation was to provide a detailed account of the experiences of English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners in their response to Written Corrective Feedback (WCF). Additionally, the study aimed to explore the preferences of these learners regarding the utilization of WCF in their thesis writing within the context of a rural Islamic higher education institution. The participants of this study consisted of twenty-two senior EFL learners who were in the process of writing their theses as their final projects. To gather the necessary data, semi-structured interviews were extensively utilized. The findings of this study revealed that EFL learners employed various strategies when responding to WCF, including a focus on grammatical error correction, an emphasis on overall error correction, the utilization of online grammar checkers, and seeking guidance from their supervisors. Furthermore, the learners' perception of WCF included their preferences, disfavored aspects, advantages, and disadvantages. These results indicate that EFL learners are expected to engage in intensive learning of grammar and writing. Additionally, it is crucial to establish standardized approaches to providing WCF. In conclusion, WCF proves to be a valuable tool for EFL learners in their thesis writing endeavors.

Abstract

Anxiety in foreign language writing burdens EFL learners before, during, and after producing scientific written texts. This current research aimed to explore the types, levels, and causes of anxiety toward writing research reports and the final thesis of rural college EFL learners and the emerging causes of their writing apprehension. 103 EFL learners in two rural colleges in Indonesia participated in the quantitative study by employing the Second Language Writing Inventory (SLWAI) and the Causes of Writing Anxiety Inventory (CWAI). The results reveal that cognitive anxiety was the highest type and level of rural college EFL learners' writing apprehension. Independent t-test shows that female EFL learners dominate male learners regarding writing anxiety. Furthermore, junior learners were more anxious than seniors. The learners with writing training had lower anxiety than those without writing experiences. Moreover, the learners taking the Research Method course were anxious about writing a research report. However, no significant difference was found between each variable. The most dominant emerging factors deal with problems with linguistic matters, fear of lecturers or supervisors' negative feedback, self-regulation in writing, writing evaluation, and inadequate training in writing. In conclusion, current classroom practice in rural colleges needs to be aware of and take academic action towards such circumstances.
