Abstract

Gliclazide (GLI), a sulfonylurea-class antidiabetic drug, exhibits poor aqueous solubility, limiting its bioavailability. This study aimed to enhance gliclazide’s solubility and dissolution rate by adsorbing it into mesoporous silica SBA-15 and amine-functionalized SBA-15 (SBA-15-A). SBA-15 was synthesized using Pluronic® P123 as a template and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica precursor, while 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was used to introduce amine functional groups. Gliclazide was loaded into SBA-15 and SBA-15-A at a 1:3 mass ratio. The materials (GLI, SBA-15, SBA-15-A, GLI-SBA, and GLI-SBA-A) were characterized using nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Characterization revealed that the pore diameters of SBA-15 and SBA-15-A were 6.079 nm and 5.483 nm, respectively. FT-IR confirmed the interaction between gliclazide and the mesoporous carriers. SEM and TEM analysis showed crystalline gliclazide and rod-shaped morphologies for the mesopores samples. DSC and PXRD results indicated that most of the gliclazide had been converted to an amorphous form. Solubility testing over 24 hours showed that GLI-SBA and GLI-SBA-A improved gliclazide solubility by 1.375- and 2.334-fold, respectively, compared to pure gliclazide. Dissolution testing in distilled water revealed a 6.033-fold and 3.887-fold increase in the release rate at 5 minutes for GLI-SBA and GLI-SBA-A, respectively. Both solubility and release rate improvements were statistically significant (p <0.05). These findings suggest that amine functionalization of SBA-15 effectively enhances the solubility and dissolution rate of gliclazide.

Abstract

The increasing by-products from sugarcane and coffee consumption have resulted in a greater volume of sugarcane bagasse and coffee waste with potential environmental impacts. Physically and chemically, coffee and sugarcane waste can be processed into soap products without further processing. This community service activity aimed to provide education and practical skills in utilising coffee and sugarcane waste as raw materials for hand soap production. The activity was conducted at the Baitussalam Mosque in Gadut, Padang City, with 20 participants. The implementation methods included material presentation, demonstrations, and hands-on practice in liquid soap formulation. The soap formula used sugarcane and coffee waste as the main ingredients with additional components including Texapon as a surfactant, EDTA as a chelating agent, salt as a viscosity regulator, warm water, and fragrance. The findings indicated that participants comprehended the potential of utilising sugarcane and coffee waste, allowing them to produce a basic liquid soap product for daily usage. Soap made from sugarcane and coffee waste has the potential to become an organic product with antioxidant and antimicrobial benefits for the skin. This activity aims to increase public awareness of the importance of waste management and promote the development of environmentally friendly, nature-based creative enterprises.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), specifically Niranta Palm Sugar in Padang City, hold immense potential but face significant challenges due to manual financial management and conventional marketing strategies. These limitations hinder operational efficiency and market expansion. This community service project aimed to enhance the efficiency and market reach of Niranta by adopting digital tools for marketing and finance. A qualitative approach with an intensive mentorship method was implemented, starting with a needs analysis, followed by financial management training using the SIAPIK application, and the development of digital marketing infrastructure, including a website, a Shopee account, and an Instagram profile. The program yielded measurable positive impacts. In finance, although the operational implementation was delegated, the partner successfully adopted a more structured digital recording system, demonstrating increased awareness of the importance of good financial governance. In marketing, the new digital infrastructure effectively broadened the market reach. The company’s website recorded 607 visitors in the first month, and the Shopee account successfully gained followers and initiated sales transactions. While a significant increase in sales is not yet apparent as the program is in its early stages, it has successfully opened new markets. Overall, the digitalization of marketing and finance has proven effective in substantially boosting the competitiveness of Niranta Palm Sugar MSME, demonstrating that technology-focused mentorship can have a tangible impact on the growth of MSME businesses.

Abstract

Niranta is a micro palm sugar processing business in Padang with export potential and high-quality products. However, the business faces challenges with limited shelf life, especially for liquid palm sugar which deteriorates within less than 6 months after opening due to microbial growth and physicochemical changes. This Community Service Program was designed to extend the shelf life of both powdered and liquid palm sugar products through scientific formulation optimization, improved preservation techniques, discussion about appropriate packaging solutions, and adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices. The 8-month program consisted of socialization sessions, hands-on training, technology transfer, and continuous mentoring focused on preservation methods, hygiene standards, and GMP implementation. Key interventions included the addition of sodium benzoate as a preservative in liquid palm sugar, process control using sterilization for packaging, and Good Manufacturing Practices mentoring collaboration with National Agency of Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) Padang. Real-time shelf-life testing was conducted on treated products for over 6 months post-opening. Preliminary results demonstrate significant improvement: liquid palm sugar supplemented with 0.1 % sodium benzoate remained microbiologically and organoleptically stable beyond 6 months. These findings confirm the effectiveness of combined preservation and process control strategies. To ensure long-term sustainability, recommendations include formal collaboration with the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) for GMP certification, advanced training for workers, and ongoing accelerated and real-time stability studies.
