Abstract

Sinusitis is a prevalent, mostly favorable medical condition. However, in rare cases, inadequately treated sinusitis can lead to devastating and life-threatening complications, such as cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST). We present the case of a 41-year-old woman presenting with diplopia and ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, facial paresthesia, and less common facial paresis. Diagnostic imaging–including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) confirmed bilateral CST secondary to untreated pansinusitis. Cultures of sinus drainage revealed uncommon pathogens: Staphylococcus epidermidis and Chryseobacterium indologenes. A multidisciplinary approach involving intravenous antibiotics, anticoagulation, and functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) resulted in significant clinical improvement. This case highlights the critical need for accurate diagnosis, timely and prudent intervention, and enhanced public health education to prevent potentially life-threatening complications of untreated sinusitis. Moreover, it contributes novel insights into the atypical microbiological profile and neurological manifestations of CST.

Abstract

ABSTRACTSalvation is a crucial aspect of human life, especially in relation to life after death. Each religion has a different understanding of how to attain salvation, including Christianity, which embraces diverse theological perspectives such as Universalism, Calvinism, and Arminianism. These three perspectives are often debated because each has its own foundation and interpretation of God's Word. However, based on biblical truth, the most harmonious view is Arminianism, which affirms that salvation is a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ, but requires a human response of faith, repentance, and ongoing faithfulness. This study aims to explain the biblical concept of salvation and its application to GKSI Bethlehem ITC Kuningan Jakarta. The method used is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach and inductive analysis to explore in-depth theological understanding based on biblical sources. The results show that salvation is a free gift from God given through faith in Jesus Christ, not the result of human effort, but rather a work of God's grace through Christ's death and resurrection. However, humans still have a responsibility to respond to this gift with faith, repentance, and ongoing faithfulness. Keywords: Salvation, Universalism, Calvinism, Arminianism, Grace of God.

Abstract

Stroke is the leading cause of death among Indonesian people over the age of five years, comprising 15.4% of all deaths, with a mortality rate of 99/100 000, and the number of disability is 685/100 000. Medical rehabilitation has an effect in improving functional status of patients with stroke, especially if it is done intensively in the first 6 months after stroke attack. Measurement of functional status is commonly used in clinic, including in Dr. Soetomo Hospital. However, no study had been conducted in measuring functional status using Barthel Index in Surabaya. Therefore, this study identified the difference of the functional status of stroke patients before and after undergoing medical rehabilitation. The study used an experimental method with pre and post design with total sampling. The samples were 47 stroke patients in Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. Data were obtained from March - April 2014 using Barthel Index. Data analysis used Wilcoxon Sign Rank test, including the distribution of each variable, which showed signification value of <0.05. This study concluded that Barthel Index score increases after undergoing medical rehabilitation.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of different dose methylmercury (II) chloride on astrocyte in cerebellar cortex of white rat (Rattus norvegicus) exposed. This study used randomized control design using 15 adult female Wistar rats weight 180-200 g of body weight. Before treatment the white rats was adapted in a week, then randomly divided into 3 groups each consist of 5 rats. P0 as control were given 0.5 ml aquades, P1 and P2 were given 0.1 and 0.2 mg/kg/day respectively. All groups were given treatment per oral in 30 days with sonde. The data was analyzed by ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range (Duncan's Multiple Range Test). White rats exposed by methylmercury (II) chloride, had a significant differences in the percentage of necrotic astrocyte (p<0.05). Methylmercury chloride exposure increases the number of necrotic astrocytes on white rat.

Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection was one of the most serious health challenges in the world. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia reports the number of HIV cases in Indonesia as of June 2019 as many as 349,882. At present, although antiretroviral combination therapy has been found, the prevalence of neurocognitive disorders in the form of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) reaches 50% of HIV patients. This study aimed to determine the relationship between high sensitivity-C Reactive Protein (hs-CRP) level and cognitive impairment assessed using MoCA-INA score in HIV patients at the UPIPI Dr. Soetomo Academic Hospital Surabaya. This cross-sectional study used consecutive sampling that fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. The cognitive function of the subjects was examined by MoCA-INA score and blood samples were collected for measuring hs-CRP level. Of 100 subjects, 41 had abnormal MoCA-INA score and 59 had normal score. The number of subjects with high level of hs-CRP (>= 5) who had abnormal and normal MoCA-INA score were 22 (53,7%) and 6 (10,2%) respectively. This result was significantly difference with p = 0,0001, RO = 28,072 (95% CI, 5,470-144,052). Therefore, there was a significant relationship between hs-CRP level and cognitive function, where a subject with a high hs-CRP level was more likely to have impaired cognitive function.

Abstract

Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, is the leading cause of hearing loss among the elderly, leading to decreased quality of life and mental health issues. While existing treatments offer some benefits, they have limitations and do not address the degenerative nature of presbycusis. This literature review examines the regenerative potential of stem cell therapy and its derivatives for cochlear hair cells and auditory neurons in cases of presbycusis. A search was conducted across PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar to identify literature published from 2020 to 2025 that studied stem cells and their derivatives for hair cell and auditory neuron regeneration in presbycusis models. Three preclinical studies using bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in rodent models demonstrated the regeneration of hair cells and auditory neurons, with evidence of hearing improvement. Each study employed unique MSC modifications using advanced techniques, such as gene editing and extracellular vesicle derivation, to enhance anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic properties. Stem cell-based therapies for presbycusis show promise but remain in early developmental stages. Major challenges include optimizing delivery methods (intracochlear, intratympanic, or intravenous routes), ensuring long-term safety profiles, preventing immune rejection and tumorigenicity, establishing standardized protocols for cell preparation and dosing, and addressing high treatment costs. Further clinical and local research is essential to facilitate the implementation of this therapy in Indonesia.

Abstract

ABSTRACTContemporary church leadership shows a shift from spirituality and commitment to the Word of God toward models oriented to popularity and institutional interests. This shift causes the Church to lose its spiritual essence and transformative power. Therefore, it is necessary to reexamine church leadership based on biblical principles, particularly the role of the Holy Spirit as the primary leader in Christ’s Church. This study aims to understand the concept and characteristics of Spirit-filled church leadership and its implications for contemporary church growth. Using a qualitative literature method, this research analyzes biblical and theological sources. The results show that Spirit-filled leadership is characterized by the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23), Christlike character, humility, wisdom, love, and courage in ministry. Such leadership builds an inclusive, transformative, and mission-centered church. Amid stagnation and secularization, Spirit-filled leadership is a divine calling that is relevant, realistic, and urgently needed. Keywords: Church Leadership, Spirit-Filled, Fruit of the Spirit, Transformative Leadership.
