Abstract

Since the rise of the second wave of feminist movement, the contribution of women in professional fields has significantly increased. As women occupy these public roles, studies found that they can still adopt the distinct language, which Lakoff (1975) termed as women's language features. This research aimed to compare and analyze the use of these features among four popular professional public roles in the United States, namely, politician, businesswoman, lawyer, and artist. Furthermore, four figures are selected with consideration of one representative per each role. The figures were Kamala Harris, Indra Nooyi, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Selena Gomez, respectively. A qualitative method was employed, using interview transcripts and audio from YouTube videos. The analysis included all ten recognized features, such as lexical hedges, tag questions, intensifiers, empty adjectives, and others. These features were identified through close reading of the transcripts and careful listening to the audio, then categorized based on the original framework. The findings showed that there were variations in the frequency of feature occurrences across the roles. Moreover, the tendencies appeared to functioned the women's language features as a deliberate way to meet job requirements.

Abstract

Slang is rapidly evolving on social media as a form of informal expression, and TikTok has become one of the most dynamic platforms for the spread of slang among the younger generation. This research aims to analyze the types and functions of slang words that develop on the TikTok social media platform in 2024. Using a qualitative approach, this study refers to Allan and Burridge's (2006) classification of slang words, which consists of five categories: fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping. Data were obtained from 19 popular TikTok videos, including text in captions, video content, and comments, which featured explicit use of slang expressions. The results show that TikTok users exhibit a high level of linguistic creativity, along with the fast, informal, and multimodal character of digital communication. Of the seven slang functions identified in previous theories, it was found that only three main functions were most dominant, namely: (1) to express impressions, (2) to show closeness or intimacy between users, and (3) to form a relaxed and familiar communication atmosphere. These findings indicate that the use of slang on TikTok not only reflects the dynamics of informal language, but is also an important means of building self-identity and strengthening social relationships among the younger generation. Thus, TikTok can be seen as a digital social space that contributes to the formation and spread of contemporary language innovations.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study aimed to examine icons, indices, and symbols in Daud's speech connected to misconceptions about Islam through the semiosis method. Semiotics can be used in a variety of contexts. therefore, it is crucial to conduct study in this area to prevent misconceptions about Islam. The study has two issues: (1) the semiotic indicators in Daud Kim's vlog that are connected to misinterpretations of Islamophobic messaging (2) Daud Kim's vlog discusses misinterpreting messages about Islam's semiosis process. In order to reply to and examine the problems, Peirce's theory of triadic relation was used which illustrates the relationship between the represent, object, and interpretation in semiotics. The description of the semiosis process and how it relates to how the indicators should be interpreted were made evident in this study using the qualitative technique. The research's semiosis process: Every statement—verbal or nonverbal—began as a representamen, progressed to an object as the first point at that statement, and—from the relationship between representamen and object—became the interpretant in the end. As a consequence, the study discovered that Daud's statement can be strengthened by the semiosis process in order to avoid and clarify the mistaken message about Islam. It is possible to understand as far as feasible, the essence of the Islamic message through representation, object, and interpreter. Keywords: semiosis, Daud Kim, icon, index, and symbol

Abstract

This study explored the phenomenon of maxim flouting in the utterances of John Terry and Ashley Cole during the Dubai Eye 103.8 Sports Podcast. It tried to describe flouting maxims by John Terry in the podcast and the similarities and differences between the flouting maxim in the utterances of John Terry and Ashley Cole. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed to analyze and interpret the data, utilizing Grice's (1975) theory of conversational maxims as the theoretical framework to explain instances of maxim flouting in the cooperative principle observed in the speakers' utterances. Data collection was conducted through document analysis. The findings revealed that John Terry's utterances contained several instances of maxim flouting: 25 occurrences of flouting the maxim of quantity (64.8%), 1 instance of flouting the maxim of quality (3.7%), 8 instances of flouting the maxim of relation (20.7%), and 4 instances of flouting the maxim of manner (10.8%). In contrast, Ashley Cole's utterances included 21 occurrences of flouting the maxim of quantity (80.7%), 2 instances each of flouting the maxims of quality and relation (7.7% each), and 1 instance of flouting the maxim of manner (3.9%). The study also identified a key similarity: both speakers predominantly flouted the maxim of quantity in their utterances. However, a notable difference was observed in the frequency and distribution of the flouted maxims between the two speakers. Keyword: flouting maxim, cooperative principle, podcast, pragmatics

Abstract

This research explores the use of irony in the film 500 Days of Summer (2009), directed by Mark Webb. Unlike typical romance films, this movie presents a non-linear narrative and avoids the usual happy ending, making it a rich subject for irony analysis. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study identifies and explains different types of irony found in the film, including dramatic, situational, verbal, etc. These ironic moments are key to understanding the development of the main character, Tom Hansen, whose expectations about love often clash with reality. Scenes such as “Expectations vs. Reality” and the unexpected meeting with Autumn illustrate how irony shapes the story and reflects Tom’s emotional journey. The findings show that irony is a powerful narrative device that adds depth to the film, challenges traditional ideas about romance, and helps the audience connect more deeply with the character’s experience. This study highlights how irony can be used in film to reveal personal growth and present a more realistic view of love.
