Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems have forest functions and benefits as a nursery zone for fisheries biota, protecting coastal abrasion, carbon sinks, and supporting nutrient content for aquatic health. Unfortunately, the area of this forest is decreasing, so conservation efforts are needed. Mangrove forests in Wakatobi Regency are a very important resource for coastal areas and small islands and should be preserved and continuously developed, along with other resources. Mangrove forest conservation efforts have become the main concern of the parties. However, planting and rehabilitation efforts are still an obstacle due to very slow growth and even death. Several cases were found where mangrove propagule planting on Wangi-Wangi Island Beach died in a short time. The aim of the research is to design a prototype or simple technology that is useful for trapping sediment and reducing the influence of waves at the beginning of propagule planting and when mangrove saplings have begun to grow and survive at the age of about 1.5 to 3 years. This research is included in quantitatively applied research in the form of a simple structural product that is then installed on Melaione Matahora Beach and Liya Togo Beach. The results obtained are the design (prototype) of a mangrove trap with a concrete structure measuring as 1 m x 0,5 m x 0,5 m with a shape similar to a puzzle box, each side of which locks together. Wakatobi mangrove trap box contains a mixture of mangrove leaf litter, seagrass litter, aggregate humus soil, and sandy soil, which is then planted with propagules of mangrove. This research lasted approximately 1 (one) year more, and the mangrove-planted seedlings grew well, although seedlings planted on Melaione Matahora Beach initially died due to moss pests, but after repairing the prototype to the 1st generation model, the propagule grew well and survival until now.

Abstract

Abstract

The conservation enterprise growth in Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, which is focused on ecotourism or natural and cultural tourism, have varied greatly in recent years regarding the environmental of Wakatobi, both in terms of appearance, human resources and variety of types. Eco-tourism has developed quite well and advanced in several places, such as Bali, but there are also those that have not succeeded in making ecotourism a leading sector and priority, such as Wakatobi Regency. To improve public understanding of sustainable tourism the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has issued a special guideline for sustainable tourism. This research is one of the GSTC indicators in the management of several marine conservation destinations on Wangi-Wangi Island, namely WTC, DCDC, and FPW Sombu. By utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, this research aims to expand knowledge about the WTC, DCDC, and FPW Sombu as one of the mainstay ecotourism destinations in Wakatobi Regency, determine whether the management of these destinations has fulfilled the GSTC criteria, and determines the development strategy of the ecotourism object in question using the GSTC indicators. The results show that, so far, the management of the WTC, DCDC, and the FPW Sombu almost largely does not meet the GSTC sustainable tourism indicators. The focus of the aspects studied are indicators of (A) sustainable development, (C) cultural sustainability and (D) environmental sustainability, which show that the management of the three marine ecotourism destinations has not been maximally considered. Overall, all three destinations are still weak, according to the analysis of the with the GSTC criteria. A review of the sustainable tourism aspects of the GSTC can provide information on the development of the WTC, DCDC, and the FPW Sombu, so that they meet the requirements to become sustainable marine ecotourism destinations in the GSTC. in terms of attractions, amenity, and accessibility.

Abstract

Given the complexity of the Banda Sea, which has rapidly changing environmental factors, studies are needed to determine the optimal location for important fishing, such as bigeye tuna (BET). To map optimal fishing locations, statistical and machine-learning methods are used through an understanding of the dynamics of chlorophyll-a (Chlo) concentrations and sea surface temperature (SST) and fish catch data as key factors. Using the fishing logbook and oceanographic data from 2014 to 2022, this study applies the methods of generalized Additive Model (GAM) and Empirical Cumulative Distribution Function (ECDF) to analyze the effect of Chlo and SSTs on Catch per Unit Efforts (CPUEs). Due to GAM's suboptimal performance, ECDF is chosen as the primary method. Determining the optimal value range using k-means and the elbow method showed an optimal Chlo range of 0.087–0.30 mg/m³ and SST of 29.46–30.45°C. The analysis showed the best catching conditions from January to March. These findings support sustainable fishing by providing a monthly map of optimal fishing zones, helping fishers adapt to dynamic conditions. Further research is suggested to integrate real-time data and advanced techniques to improve location accuracy.
