Abstract

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where they are and what they are doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what is going around them. The growing evidence of the use of mindfulness practice on promoting psychological wellbeing and self-regulation is in line with the increasing use of mobile applications in this digital era nowadays especially during the COVID-19 pandemic era. This study aims to find out the influence of two mobile-based mindfulness apps, Calm and Headspace, on the pre-service teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Indonesia studying online during COVID-19 pandemic era. The 43 subjects were given 20-session-mindfulness intervention (guided and independent trainings) using the two mobile-based mindfulness apps. The data from the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), the classroom observations, and the written interviews were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results from the t-test analysis on the FFMQ show that there was an improvement on the subjects’ mindfulness level after the intervention. Furthermore, the results of the observation and the interview show that the oral narrations of the contents in the apps were found useful as a means to provide positive learning environment before and during the learning practice. Moreover, the oral narrations of the contents in the apps were specifically found useful as a means to practice listening comprehension. Therefore, besides being served as a means to practice and improve the pre-service teachers’ mindfulness level, mobile-based mindfulness apps could also be used to enhance one’s English listening comprehension skills. The use of mobile-based mindfulness applications can be promising for pre-service teachers in Indonesia who need to have balance academic and social-emotional skills to support their role in teaching students in the future.

Abstract

Writing scientific articles is a skill that must be owned by a teacher and the usage of Mendeley technology in writing scientific articles is a supporting facility in obtaining qualified scientific papers. Therefore, the execution of training activities needs to be carried out with the purpose of enhancing the motivation, knowledge, and abilities of high school English instructors in the city of Palembang. The activity model carried out is mentoring with the lecture approach, discussion, peer and tutor feedback and assignments. Evaluation of activities is carried out by administering tests and questionnaires as well as monitoring and documenting articles produced by the teacher. The findings of the evaluation demonstrated that the enthusiasm, knowledge, and skills of teacher participants in writing scientific articles increased. However, teachers still have issues using Mendeley as a citation and collaborative tool.

Abstract

Peran Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar pendidikan di Indonesia dipandang penting dalam kemajuan dan perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan. Walaupun Bahasa Inggris masih berkedudukan sebagai bahasa asing pertama di Indonesia, Bahasa Inggris dijadikan sebagai sarana pengembangan dan pemanfaatan ilmu pengetahuan, teknologi dan seni. Maka dari itu, diperlukan penguasaan Bahasa Inggris, khususnya penguasaan TOEFL, di dunia pendidikan bagi mahasiswa. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menjawab tes Bahasa Inggris ekuivalensi TOEFL.  Jumlah peserta pada kegiatan ini adalah 41 orang yang berasal dari seluruh program studi Strata-1 di lingkungan FKIP Universitas Sriwijaya. Model yang digunakan adalah pendampingan, dimana tim memberikan pelatihan kepada peserta mengenai keterampilan menyimak, struktur, dan membaca. Adapun metode kegiatan yang dilakukan adalah presentasi. Sebelum penyampaian materi, peserta menjawab tes awal (pre-test) dan di akhir peserta menjawab tes akhir (post-test).  Peserta terlihat antusias dalam mengikuti kegiatan ini. Berdasarkan wawancara singkat dengan peserta, diharapkan kegiatan ini dapat berlanjut di tahun berikutnya. Kendala yang terjadi selama berlangsungnya kegiatan tidak menganggu pelaksanaan kegiatan. Abstract

This study aimed at finding out whether or not: (1) there was a significant difference in descriptive writing achievement after they were taught by using process approach through environmental observation and (2) there was a significant difference in descriptive writing achievement between the students who were taught by using process approach through environmental observation and those who were not. By employing a quasi-experimental design, the sample of this study was 80 students of tenth graders of SMA Negeri 9 Palembang taken by using purposive sampling method. The data were analyzed by using paired sample and independent sample t-test. The result of this study showed that: (1) there was significant improvement in descriptive writing achievement of the experimental group; mean difference of post-test and pre-test was 7.500 and the significance value was 0.000 (p-value0.05), and (2) there was significant difference in descriptive writing achievement between the students who were taught by applying process approach through environmental observation and those who were not. The mean difference of the post-test of the experimental group was higher than the control group (7.5370.128) and the significance value was 0.000 (p-value0.05). Therefore, process approach through environmental observation is effective to enhance students descriptive writing achievement.

Abstract

When we hear the word ‘literature’, we always associate it with old and beautiful things. Climate change is considered as current information that must be understood by everyone and has nothing to do with literature. UNESCO highlights the issue of climate change as an international issue that everyone should be concerned about. Regarding this global issue, UNESCO also puts forward digital literacy involving the ability to use technology, information and communication tools, and involves the ability to learn to socialize, think critically, creatively, and inspire as a digital competition, involving the process of reading, understanding, writing, and composing something as new knowledge or content. This study aimed to discuss how pre-service teachers make short stories using climate change news to enhance literary digital literacy. In other words, students converted news texts about climate change on the internet into short stories. To obtain the data, this study used interview and documentation to analyse the results of students' critical and creative writings in the form of short stories based on climate change in Indonesian context. It is a qualitative and data obtained from student documents were analyzed qualitatively by means of transcription, literature study, and documentation. The results of this study were students be able to write short stories using the news about climate change on the internet facilitated by Canva to produce the learning material and digital story telling. Thus, this climate change-based short stories also contribute to the development of literary digital literacy.Keywords: climate change, utilization, enhancement, short stories, literary digital literacy PENGUBAHAN INFORMASI BERITA PERUBAHAN IKLIM MENJADI CERITA PENDEK UNTUK PENINGKATAN LITERASI DIGITAL SASTRA AbstrakBila mendengar kata sastra, kita selalu mengaitkannya dengan hal-hal lama atau dahulu yang indah. Perubahan iklim dianggap sebagai informasi kekinian yang wajib dipahami oleh semua orang dan tidak ada kaitannya dengan sastra. UNESCO menyoroti isu perubahan iklim sebagai isu internasional yang semua orang harus peduli.Terkait isu global ini, UNESCO juga mengedepankan literasi digital melibatkan kemampuan penggunaan perangkat teknologi, informasi dan komunikasi, dan  melibatkan kemampuan untuk dalam pembelajaran bersosialisasi, sikap berpikir kritis, kreatif, serta inspiratif sebagai kompetisi digital, melibatkan proses membaca, memahami, menulis, dan menciptakan sesuatu sebagai sebuah pengetahuan maupun konten baru. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengelaborasi bagaimana mahasiswa calon guru membuat cerita pendek dengan menggunakan konten perubahan iklim untuk mengembangkan literasi digital sastra. Dengan kata lain, mahasiswa mengalihwahanakan teks-teks berita tentang perubahan iklim di internet menjadi cerita pendek. Untuk mendapatkan data, penelitian ini menggunakan instrument wawancara dan dokumentasi hasil tulisan kritis dan kreatif mahasiswa berupa cerpen berbasis perubahan iklim dalam konteks Indonesia. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dan data diperoleh dari dokumen mahasiswa dianalisis secara kualitatif dengan cara transkripsi, studi pustaka, dan dokumentasi. Hasil dari penelitian ini mahasiswa mampu menulis cerpen dengan menggunakan konten atau berita-berita terkait perubahan iklim dengan difasilitasi oleh Canva dan menghasilkan bahan ajar dan cerita digital. Dengan demikian, teks naratif berbasis perubahan iklim ini turut berkontribusi bagi pengembangan Literasi Digital Sastra.Kata kunci: perubahan iklim, kegunaan, pengembangan, cerita pendek, Literasi Digital Sastraa

Abstract

Multimodality which encourages the combination of text, image, sound, and videos could be varied from class to class. Multimodal literacy as a new dimension of literacy in the 21st century has emerged as a critical skill that EFL students must develop, given its role as a source of meaning in communication. The purpose of this study was to identify the level of students’ multimodal literacy and to identify lecturers’ standpoints on students’ multimodal literacy. This study was conducted both quantitatively and qualitatively and involved 71 EFL students who took creative writing subject in an English education program in one state university in South Sumatera. The data were collected by distributing a questionnaire from Bulut et al. (2015) and by interviewing 3 lecturers who taught the subject. Descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA were used to determine mean, standard deviation and differences in terms of gender and classes with different lecturer; qualitative data were thematically analyzed to categorize the themes. The results indicated that students’ multimodal literacy level was categorized high as indicated by the mean of each aspect of questionnaire: 4.22, 4.11 and 3.6 respectively. There was no different level of multimodal literacy between male and female students, and different lecturers with different instructions did not influence the level.. Finally, the lecturers perceived positively to students’ multimodal literacy . Similarly, referring to the lecturers’ view, the students gave positive attitude towards multimodal writing and hence making their multimodal digital fiction successful. Abstract

meningkatkan potensi dirinya sesuai dengan kesiapan belajar, minat, dan profil belajar peserta didik yang berbeda-bedaLembar Kinerja Peserta Didik (LKPD) yang merupakan salah satu bahan ajar yang sering digunakan oleh guru sebagai sarana pendukung dalam belajar karena di dalamnya terdapat berbagai macam bentuk latihan soal. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah memberikan pendampingan kepada guru-guru bahasa Inggris di kota Muaradua, Kabupaten Ogan Komering Ulu Selatan (OKUS), Sumatera Selatan, dalam menyusun LKPD berdiferensiasi. Kegiatan dilakukan melalui penyampaian materi, diskusi, dan penugasan. Dari hasil investigasi awal melalui pemberian kuesioner dapat disimpulkan bahwa peserta memahami konsep pembelajaran berdiferensiasi tetapi masih mengalami kesulitan dalam menyusun LKPD berbasis diferensiasi. Setelah mendapatkan pendampingan, peserta menunjukkan kemampuan dalam menyusun LKPD berdiferensiasi. Hal ini terlihat dari hasil akhir LKPD yang mereka susun telah menunjukkan konsep pembelajaran berdiferensiasi.
