Abstract

This paper describes the greeting patterns that arise and are used by the campus community of Gorontalo State University, especially lecturers with a multicultural basis. The scope of the discussion is limited to the pattern of use of greeting words when interacting in the work environment with social constraints in the activity of selecting the type of greeting word that is in accordance with social identity and its variants. As a comparison, the Ervin-Tripp model (1969) is used, which analyzes greeting patterns in American English. The results of the comparison show that in English the greeting pattern is dominated by personal names and seven choices of greeting forms. Meanwhile, in Indonesian (in Gorontalo) the pattern of use of greeting words is dominated by kinship terms with eleven main patterns and a number of choices of greeting forms. Each use of greeting words spoken by each lecturer in the campus environment forms a personal identity directly to classify language speakers and their language.

Abstract

Language functions not only to convey information but also to express attitudes, commitment, and conceptual perspectives. In digital communication, the Islamic expression insyaallah (“if God wills”) has experienced a semantic shift from its theological meaning toward a pragmatic social function. This study investigates the reconceptualization of insyaallah in digital interactions using Ronald W. Langacker’s Cognitive Grammar framework. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes utterances from social media and instant messaging platforms by examining their contexts, interlocutors’ responses, and conceptual structures. The findings indicate that insyaallah increasingly functions as a marker of uncertainty, tentative commitment, and social risk mitigation rather than solely expressing submission to God’s will. The analysis also reveals a shift from a religious-theological frame to a social-probabilistic frame and the emergence of reduced commitment patterns. Interlocutors consistently interpret insyaallah according to this emerging meaning, suggesting shared conceptualization. The study contributes empirical evidence that lexical meaning is dynamically reconstructed through repeated social interaction and digital communication.

Abstract

The changing context of digital communication has influenced how speakers construct meaning, including the use of the word insyaallah, which has shifted from its theological meaning toward a socio-pragmatic one. This study aims to analyze the reconceptualization of the meaning of insyaallah in digital interactions using the Cognitive Linguistics perspective within Langacker’s Cognitive Grammar framework. A qualitative approach was employed by analyzing usage contexts, interlocutors’ responses, and the conceptual elements underlying meaning construction. The findings reveal that insyaallah no longer solely represents submission to God's will and a strong commitment, but is more frequently used to express uncertainty, possibility, or a strategy for reducing commitment in social interaction. This semantic shift reflects changes in the collective mental model shaped by repeated digital communication practices. The study concludes that the meaning of insyaallah is dynamic, continuously reconstructed through communicative practices, and influenced by the changing media and social contexts of language use. Keywords: reconceptualization, insyaallah, digital interaction, cognitive linguistics.
