Abstract

Ternate is one of the cities in North Maluku, located right beneath Gamalama Mountain. Ternate was once a trade center in the 13th century and became a melting pot for people from different countries with different purposes. There were Portuguese, Dutch, and Spanish with the aim of colonizing, and there were Arabian, Chinese, and locals outside Ternate, such as people from Halmahera, Sulawesi, Maluku, Sumatra, and Java, who came for trading. The arrival of these people contributes not only to language adaptation but also to place names known as toponymy. There are several relevant studies concerning toponymy in Indonesia, but they have yet to be done in Ternate. Hence, this research aims to: 1) analyze the morphological process of the villages naming in Ternate and 2) provide toponyms classification of the villages naming in Ternate. The primary data are taken from Ternate Dalam Angka, a statistical data from BPS Ternate, which contains 59 villages/sub-districts named in Ternate. The data was then analyzed and triangulated through in-depth interviews and literature studies. The data are presented both formally and informally. The analysis results show morphological processes concerning zero derivation, reduplication, compounding, abbreviation, back-formation, combination, borrowing, and phrases that occurred in the villages named in Ternate. The findings also attest to a theory proposed by George R. Stewart (2012) regarding toponymy classification of village naming in Ternate, in which there are descriptive, incident, possessive, commemorative, euphemistic, folk etymologies, manufactured, shift, mistake, descriptive + manufactured, euphemistic + manufactured, euphemistic + manufactured, and unknown.

Abstract

The characteristic of vocabulary learning skills is different from any other language learning skill. It requires self-willingness and experience to achieve a higher vocabulary number or specific language proficiency level. Students with higher vocabulary knowledge seem to have tremendous advantages in comprehending language sources. At the same time, their counterparts find that vocabulary is their barrier to acquiring, understanding, and even using the target language. This study aims to examine whether or not students' vocabulary learning strategies contribute to their vocabulary knowledge. The study participants were second-year students of the English Department at Khairun University. The vocabulary strategy data were obtained from a questionnaire developed by Gu and Johnson (1996), while the vocabulary knowledge used a validated version of the Vocabulary Levels Test by Schmitt et al. (2001) and the Word Associates Test (WAT) developed by Read (1993; 2004). The result revealed that students preferred indirect effective strategies to acquire new words, while indirect social cooperation was the least used strategy. However, students’ vocabulary strategy scores correlated negatively to the breadth and depth of students’ vocabulary knowledge. Students need special treatment to enhance their vocabulary knowledge.

Abstract

This community service aims to provide learning videos to all participants in the National Science Olympiad in Natural Sciences. This learning video is a free learning resource that can be accessed anytime and anywhere via the YouTube platform. These learning videos consist of 9 videos containing OSN Science grids and are collected into one playlist entitled KSN IPA (Fisika) SMP. The use of YouTube in supporting preparations for the science olympiads at junior high school level can be said to be effective by looking at the number of viewers, the number of likes and that no one gave a dislike. Ease of access and targeted material content can be something that attracts students participating in OSN. Even the comments column can also be used as a medium for discussion and correction of each material presented.

Abstract

The Kartu Indonesia Pintar Kuliah (KIP-K) is a scholarship program provided by the government for high school graduates who excel academically but are economically disadvantaged and unable to continue their studies at university. The KIP-K program aims to increase opportunities for students to pursue higher education by providing monthly living expenses and tuition fees for students who meet the eligibility criteria. Through KIP-K, it is expected to create a competitive and well-educated generation of future leaders. In North Maluku Province, particularly in Malifut, North Halmahera Regency, many students still lack information about the KIP-K scholarship. Therefore, this community service activity aimed to provide insights into the importance of pursuing education at the university level and how underprivileged students can apply for the KIP-K scholarship. This activity was carried out at SMAN 4 Halmahera Utara and SMKN 2 Halmahera Utara. As a result of this socialization, students successfully created their own accounts and registered for the KIP-K scholarship. It is hoped that through this program, students will take advantage of higher education opportunities through KIP-K and be able to continue their studies and achieve their goals.

Abstract

Pengelolaan pariwisata adalah salah satu upaya yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat, swasta maupun pemerintah dalam meningkatkan kualitas dan kuantitas sebuah objek wisata. Pengelolaan diartikan sebagai suatu rangkaian pekerjaan atau usaha yang dilakukan oleh sekelompok orang untuk melakukan serangkaian kerja dalam mencapai tujan tertentu. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui pengelolaan atraksi pendukung oleh masyarakat di obyek wisata pantai Tobololo. Metode dalam penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif yaitu melibatkan upaya-upaya penting, seperti mengajukan pertanyaan-pertanyaan dan prosedur-prosedur, mengumpulkan data yang spesifik dari para partisipan, menganalisis data secara induktif mulai dari tema-tema yang khusus ke tema-tema yang umum, dan menafsirkan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari aspek pengembangan bersifat stagnan dan cenderung menurun, sementara dari aspek pengaturan menunjukkan bahawa terdapat empat bagian dalam kepemilikan lahan yang sah secara hukum oleh empat orang pemilik lahan yang terbentang disepanjang pantai, sementara dari aspek kelembagaan menunjukkan bahwa belum adanya suatu organisasi atau pokdarwis yang mengelola obyek wisata secara menyeluruh, setiap pemilik lahan mengelola tempatnya masing-masing dan belum adanya suatu bentuk kerja sama baik antar pemilik lahan. Abstract

Politeness is one of the basics in creating effective communication in public spaces. One of the public spaces that is quite often used when communicating is social media, one of which is Twitter. People, including politicians, often express their opinions on certain issues through Twitter. Ridwan Kamil expressed his opinion about the characteristics of Jakarta residents long before entering politics. The tweet received many negative responses from netizens because it was considered impolite. This study aims to analyze the pragmatic features of the tweet by identifying violations of the principle of politeness and discussing its effectiveness on political discourse and digital communication. The data used are Ridwan Kamil's tweets in 2011, which mention in detail the characteristics of Jakarta residents, which were reposted by the @txtdrjkt account. Data analysis uses a discourse analysis approach guided by the theory presented by Leech (1991). The results of the analysis show that through a single tweet, Ridwan Kamil also violates the maxims of tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy.

Abstract

Pesantren sebagai lembaga pendidikan Islam tradisional dapat memanfaatkan teknologi digital untuk meningkatkan efektivitas pembelajaran dan pengembangan wawasan siswa. Dalam pengabdian ini, dilakukan pelatihan kepada para siswa dalam penggunaan aplikasi digital yang relevan dengan konten pendidikan Islam dan umum. Metode yang digunakan adalah ‘learning by doing’ (LBT) yang merupakan model pembelajaran yang juga dibarengi dengan tindakan, yang artinya belajar tidak hanya secara teoretis tetapi juga dipraktekkan langsung dilapangan. Rangkaian kegiatan pada program ini meliputi pelatihan praktis, pembimbingan, dan demonstrasi penggunaan aplikasi untuk memastikan pemanfaatan teknologi secara optimal. Hasil dari pengabdian ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan pemahaman siswa terhadap pemahaman teknologi dan membantu mereka mengembangkan keterampilan menggunakan teknologi dalam bentuk video digital interaktif. Selain itu, diharapkan pula tercipta lingkungan pembelajaran yang lebih interaktif dan menyenangkan di lingkungan pesantren, yang pada gilirannya dapat meningkatkan motivasi belajar siswa. Kesimpulannya, pemanfaatan aplikasi digital dalam pendidikan pesantren memiliki potensi besar untuk meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan dan semangat belajar siswa, serta mampu mempersiapkan mereka dalam menghadapi tantangan di era digital ini. Sangat diharapkan agar program pengabdian ini bisa menjadi acuan untuk bisa diimplementasikan di pesantren-pesantren lainnya yang ada di wilayah Indonesia pada umumnya, dan terkhususnya di Kota Ternate.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the ethnophysics characteristics of Javanese gamelan and to analyze how these characteristics can be integrated into STEAM-based physics learning. Specifically, the research seeks to identify the ethnophysics phenomena embedded in gamelan instruments, examine their cultural meanings, and formulate pedagogical implications for culturally responsive science education. Using a qualitative ethnographic design, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving gamelan craftsmen, pengrawit, and cultural experts. The findings show that instruments such as saron, demung, peking, kenong, gong, and kendang embody fundamental physics principles, including vibration, resonance, frequency, amplitude, and damping, which arise naturally from their material composition, construction processes, and performance techniques. At the same time, these instruments carry symbolic values rooted in Javanese philosophy, representing harmony, balance, collectivism, and spiritual interconnectedness. The combination of scientific and cultural dimensions demonstrates that gamelan can serve as an authentic learning medium that bridges traditional knowledge with modern physics concepts. Pedagogically, integrating ethnophysics into STEAM supports interdisciplinary learning that blends scientific investigation, engineering design, mathematical reasoning, technological tools, and artistic expression. This approach enhances contextual understanding, creativity, inclusivity, and cultural identity. The study proposes the Ethno-STEAM model as an innovative framework for decolonizing science education by positioning cultural heritage as a legitimate source of scientific insight. Overall, the ethnophysics of Javanese gamelan offers a transformative pathway for physics learning that is both scientifically rigorous and culturally grounded.

Abstract

The Tourism Information Center plays a very important role and serves as a supporting facility in promoting the tourist attractions and destinations of a particular region. With the existence of a Tourism Information Center in an area, tourists will not have difficulty and can easily obtain information related to tourism in that region. It has a very significant role in introducing tourist attractions to visitors; therefore, it requires excellent and professional service to ensure that tourists are not disappointed when seeking tourism information. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of the Tourism Information Center in providing tourism information services in Ternate City. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach, which involves key efforts such as posing questions and procedures, collecting specific data from participants, analyzing the data inductively from specific themes to general themes, and interpreting the data. The results of the study show that the role of the Tourism Information Center in Ternate City has not been carried out optimally due to limited budgets and a lack of human resources with competence in the field, which has caused the Tourism Information Center in Ternate City to often not operate during working hours.

Abstract

A noun phrase (NP) is a syntactic category that plays an important role in forming a sentence, along with a verb phrase. The form required at least one noun as the head, and may be accompanied by  pre- and post-modifiers. This study aims to examine whether NP structures continue to play a vital role in shaping meaning in emerging forms of communication. This study was carried out in three stages: data collection, data analysis, and presentation of results.  The data were collected through observation, while the basic technique employed was tapping. The data used is the 10 most popular USS Feed Instagram post captions during April.  In the data analysis, the data were classified into NP’s categorisation based on (Quirk, Randolph; Greenbaum, Sidney; Leech, Geoffrey; Svartvik, 1985). The data were then presented both formally and informally. The result shows that out of 10 Instagram captions, a total of 310 NPs were identified, 193 basic NPs, and 117 complex NPs. The basic NPs appear in the form of a noun and its premodifier (s), while a post-modifier or both pre-modifiers and post-modifiers may accompany the complex NPs. The complex NP can sometimes be confusing because it includes too much information within one structure.
