Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the potential nutritional value of livestock feed ingredients from agricultural products and their waste (by-product / residues) that had been utilized by pig farmers in Manokwari. This research was conducted by a survey method of some agricultural commodity-based animal feed sources and their associated results at 10 sampling locations. Feeds are collected and analyzed according to the proximate analysis of feed ingredients at the Nutrition and Animal Feed laboratory, Bogor Agricultural University. Samples of farmers are chosen purposely on smallholder farmers who have been utilizing these feed sources. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results of the study found that feed was used by combining food waste originating from markets, restaurants, fried food sellers, fish auctions, garden products and kitchen wastes (swill-feed). Types of feed from various sources are mixed and cooked together before being given to pigs. Food waste is obtained free of charge, but there is a small portion that buys and a combination of both. Feeding is practiced 1-3 times a day. Nutrient content (g/100 g) in the form of water was 9.47, PK 25.10, fat 11.75 g, SK 7.96, GE 4308.90, ash 8.58, Ca 2.35 and P 0.94. The SNI standards have met the standard criteria to be prepared and given to pigs.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This community service activity aimed to improve the technical compliance of qurban animal slaughter based on halal principles and animal welfare standards at Darul Ulum Mosque, Amban Village, West Manokwari District, Manokwari Regency. A case study approach with participatory techniques was employed, involving certified Halal Slaughterers (Juleha), qurban committees, university students, and experts. The activities covered antemortem inspection, slaughtering, postmortem examination, and meat distribution. The results showed that the slaughtering process was conducted in accordance with Islamic Sharia principles, ensuring the proper severance of the three main channels efficiently and swiftly. Postmortem inspection revealed parasitic infestations (fasciola hepatica and parampistomon) in several organs, which were handled appropriately following established protocols. Improvements are still needed in animal holding facilities, particularly regarding feed, water supply, and sanitation prior to slaughter. This program significantly enhanced the technical capacity of Juleha and the qurban committee, strengthening the implementation of halalan thayyiban and animal welfare principles at the mosque community level. Keywords: Animal welfare; halal slaughter; Juleha; postmortem inspection; qurban   ABSTRAK Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kepatuhan teknis penyembelihan hewan qurban sesuai prinsip halal dan kesejahteraan hewan (animal welfare) di Masjid Darul Ulum, Kelurahan Amban, Distrik Manokwari Barat, Kabupaten Manokwari. Abstract

Forage productivity strongly depends on appropriate fertilization strategies, particularly in the cultivation of Pennisetum purpureum (elephant grass), a key tropical livestock feed. This study aimed to compare the effects of three fertilizer types—goat manure compost, urea, and NPK—on the productivity of elephant grass grown on inceptisol soil. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed with four treatments (no fertilizer, 2 tons/ha compost, 150 kg/ha urea, and 422 kg/ha NPK) and three replications. Observed parameters included fresh biomass yield, dry matter yield, and organic matter yield. The results indicated that NPK treatment significantly outperformed others in all parameters: fresh biomass (35.27 tons/ha), dry matter (5.88 tons/ha), and organic matter (5.35 tons/ha). Urea provided moderate results, while compost did not significantly differ from the control. These findings suggest that NPK delivers readily available macronutrients, which greatly enhance vegetative growth. Nevertheless, goat manure compost holds long-term potential to improve soil structure and fertility. The study recommends integrating organic and inorganic fertilization as a sustainable approach in tropical forage production systems. Abstract

Background. Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem caused by prolonged inadequate nutrient intake, leading to impaired child growth where height falls below the age-standard. One effective intervention is dairy consumption, which provides protein, calcium, vitamin D, and other essential micronutrients. However, public awareness of its benefits is still limited, necessitating continuous education. Aims. To enhance public knowledge and awareness regarding stunting, its impact on child growth and development, and to promote the role of milk consumption as a nutritional intervention to support optimal growth and prevent stunting. Methods. This community service program (PKM) was carried out in Kampung Meyes, North Manokwari District, on May 12, 2025, involving 40 participants, including children and parents. The program used an educational campaign method through leaflet distribution, interactive discussions, and free milk distribution for children. The results showed a positive response: children were enthusiastic about milk consumption, community leaders expressed gratitude, and parents acknowledged the importance of nutrition education. Conclusion. Educational campaigns are effective in raising awareness and promoting behavioral change in the community. Regular follow-up programs and collaborative efforts among academics, local government, and the private sector are recommended to strengthen stunting prevention and improve child nutrition in rural communities.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  A livestock contest is a strategic approach that can encourage improvements in maintenance quality and motivate farmers in developing their livestock. This activity was carried out in Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua, involving 30 Indigenous Papuan (OAP) farmers with a total of 50 Bali cattle. After administrative selection and health checks, 34 cattle were assessed based on morphometric parameters, Body Condition Score (BCS), estimated body weight, and maintenance management. The results showed significant variation in livestock performance and the level of adoption of maintenance practices. Farmers’ involvement in the measurement process provided direct educational experiences and increased awareness of the importance of data-based management and livestock breeding selection to improve productivity. In addition to identifying livestock individuals with superior genetic potential, the contest also encouraged a shift in farmers’ mindset toward sustainable livestock development. This model is recommended as a replicable approach for regions with similar socio-economic conditions.
