Abstract

This article aims to explore the recovery process of two women survivors of online gender-based violence and their efforts to maintain their livelihoods. This article shows the bondage of violence with the spaces in survivors lives and the livelihood strategies they employ. The method used is a qualitative feminist perspective with data collection techniques carried out by in-depth interviews via online. The data were then analyzed using the Sphere, Time, and Violence (STV) framework by Elias and Rai, which explains deeper about the inequality women experienced in their lives based on 3 aspects; space, time, and violence. The results of the study show two main findings: first, online gender-based violence experienced by women is intertwined with women's roles and living spaces. Women got economic and psychological impacts along with victim blaming and negative stigma from the environment. Second, women survivors seek different coping strategies to survive and recover. Both of the subjects limit their access to communication, carry out technical efforts, and report the case they experienced to the authorities. Unfortunately, the state does not guarantee the recovery of online gender-based violence victims, so there are losses and costs that must be borne by the survivors themselves

Abstract

Subyek penelitian ini adalah autobiografi No Tears for My Father karya Viga Boland.

Abstract

Online dating applications are frequently used by young adults across the globe. Research from several countries has found a strong link between the use of dating apps and risky sexual behavior. Risky sexual behaviors refer to sexual behaviors that may lead to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and/or unwanted pregnancies. This study aims to examine the use of smartphone dating applications by young adults in big cities in Indonesia to explore if users engage in risky sexual behavior with fellow users. To investigate this question, this study employed mixed methods including a survey and focused interviews. The survey succeeded in collecting data from 633 dating application users and the focused interviews were conducted with 6 participants. Interview participants were young adults who used dating apps and have had sexual relations with partners found through these apps. Research findings show results that are relatively similar to previous research. The results highlighted that dating app was used to find friends or partners and as a means of channeling sexual desire. On one hand, participants were aware of the consequences of the practice of unprotected sex with multiple partners. On the other hand, they expressed a preference for engaging in risky sexual behaviors rather than refraining from them, with various justified and rationalized reasons that they were quite safe. Moreover, this study also noted the instance of men committing sexual violations against women who were made vulnerable and become “trapped” as victims of a sexual offense.

Abstract

Amidst the popular use of Tinder in urban society, the decision whether or not to date someone tends to be made quickly based on a photo and a short profile description. Simple as it may seem, there are moments when swiping gets challenging, especially for women. Tinder has a notorious reputation when it comes to gender-based violence. Unfortunately, despite the significant increase in online dating apps usage during the COVID-19 pandemic, this phenomenon is still highly underresearched. In this qualitative netnographic research, we explore Tinder sexual harassment narratives uploaded by women in Quora. Through judgment sampling, 15 answers from 7 questions posted by Quora users and 12 comments were analyzed. Criteria of inclusion for answers are as follows: Answers should (1) contain personal account on violence and/or harassment related to Tinder-use, (2) be written by women, (3) indicate that the perpetrator is male. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Four main themes emerged: the forms of gender-based violence experienced by women while dating men from Tinder, women’s feelings after experiencing gender-based violence perpetrated by their Tinder dates, women’s responses after experiencing gender-based violence from their Tinder dates, and responses from other Quora users after reading women’s stories on gender-based violence experienced through Tinder.

Abstract

Masculinity is a discourse that continues to develop over time and is closely related to men. This underlies the idea of the ideal man which continues to be constructed through certain  standardizations, in accordance with the existing socio-cultural conditions. As a result, certain existing standards are harmful and even have the potential to make men individuals who are homophobic, misogynistic, violent, and have a desire to dominate. As the Son of God who was incarnated as a male, Jesus was also faced with these kinds of potentials. His choice to follow harmful standards or not is important to know. This study explores the nature, attitude/behaviour, and role of Jesus through qualitative research by conducting a literature review. This study uses feminine writing as a conceptual framework with a feminist perspective to analyze the situation and actions that Jesus took. The findings of this study indicate the actions of Jesus who rejected various forms of toxic masculinity. On the other hand, Jesus defined his own masculinity, and also did not hesitate to do things that could be read as feminine actions. This has implications for the life of Christians to have both masculinity and femininity that are healthy, without hurting and harming themselves or others.

Abstract

The success of rehabilitation can be seen based on the length of treatment carried out by narcotics abusers. Institusi Penerima Wajib Lapor (IPWL) of the BNN DKI Jakarta area, as an outpatient rehabilitation service provider, has a fairly low treatment completion rate, namely 65% for male clients and 46% for female clients. The client's presence in rehabilitation is inseparable from the client's health behavior which is influenced by predisposing factors, enabling factors, and reinforcing factors. The existence of differences in the characteristics of drug abuse between men and women can also affect the behavior of clients. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the behavior of clients in running an outpatient rehabilitation program. A mixed-methods approach was used in this study. The quantitative approach was carried out using a questionnaire with the method of factor analysis and multiple linear regression analysis of 79 clients who became the research sample. The qualitative approach was carried out using in-depth interviews with 9 informants consisting of clients and rehabilitation officers. The results showed that there was a significant influence between behavioral factors on client attendance. Of the 3 variables formed, family support has a significant influence on client attendance in outpatient rehabilitation services. In addition, regarding the differences in rehabilitation approaches between male and female clients, a rehabilitation program that is sensitive to women needs to be developed. The results of this study can be used by policy makers in improving the quality of outpatient rehabilitation services. Abstract

Understanding and improving teacher well-being are essential prerequisites for effective teaching. However, studies on teacher well-being in Indonesia are few. This mixed-method study was conducted to identify the factors that influence the well-being of teachers in primary schools in Indonesia. Data were collected through self-rating and open-ended questions from 209 primary school teachers followed by semi-structured interviews with eight teachers. The results of the self- rating survey illustrated that the teachers were very satisfied with their lives as a teacher. Well-being was considered important in their work, because it can exert a positive impact on students. The results of the thematic analysis demonstrated that relational and professional dimensions are the most frequently cited themes in the responses as factors that support and inhibit well-being. The lack of learning facilities and infrastructure in schools are cited as the most inhibiting factors. The study discussed potential explanations for the findings in relation to teacher well-being.

Abstract

Abstract Women’s piety in Islamic discourse is often associated with religious symbols such as the use of the hijab to cover aurat. Women are also associated with domestic roles such as taking care of the house and children, and obeying their husbands as a form of obedience to Allah Swt. Women then believe that the division of labour is in their nature, which then creates a hegemonic construction of piety. Meanwhile, Saba Mahmood (2005) from her research in Egypt found that piety can be interpreted as the ability to interpret religious teachings as instructions for daily life, while maintaining obedience to Allah Swt. However, in the Indonesian context, we are currently facing conservative and textualist groups that, although they are usually in the minority, have strong networks in the dissemination of doctrinal teachings that reinforce the hegemonic construction of piety. Therefore, it is important to develop the counter-narratives and similar movements that Mahmood found in Egypt in Indonesia, which can provide women with a critical analysis of religious teachings.
