Abstract

Coal mining activities have affected the soil and vegetation conditions on the mined land. Revegetation of ex-mining land is a must to balance environmental functions. The choice of plants must be adapted to the conditions of the ex-mining land so that growth continues. The use of local plants for revegetation is fascinating to study. This study aimed to investigate the soil characteristics of ex-coal mining land and bamboo growth as a plant used for revegetation. Bamboo is collected from around the former coal mining area. Bamboo growth is observed through its branching for 12 weeks of measurement. Soil is analyzed based on its physical and chemical properties. The Schmidt-Ferguson method was used to analyze the climate type in the study area. The results of the soil analysis show that the plants can still grow for revegetation. Of the three types of bamboo observed (Schizostachyum brachycladum kurz, Dendrocalamus asper, and Gigantochloa robusta), Schizostachyum brachycladum kurz is the best growing bamboo in ex-coal mining land with a branch length of 42 cm in 12 weeks of measurement. The climate in the ex-coal mining area studied is a wet type (Q = 0.184). Bamboo is a suitable plant for revegetation, especially in coal mining areas in South Sumatra, Indonesia.

Abstract

The development of the city center in various forms can affect Green Open Space (GOS) as a source of oxygen, sports facilities, community recreation facilities, and regional income. This study was conducted at the City Center of Muara Enim Regency. Muara Enim Regency has experienced rapid development in recent years, so it is suspected that there has been a reduction in the area of GOS. This research aims to identify, analyze, and map the provision of GOS in the City Center of Muara Enim Regency. The main data in this research include Landsat 8 satellite image data for 2021-2023. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) algorithm analysis method is the basis for determining the density of vegetation that makes up the green spaces. Law No. 26 of 2007 on spatial planning states that the proportion of green space in urban areas is at least 30% of the total area. The results showed that the area of dense vegetation in Muara Enim Regency City Center decreased, but the amount of green space in City Center of Muara Enim Regency was 73.57% of the area and still met the proportion of green space set by the government.

Abstract

A program to educate rubber farmers on the use of chemicals with B3 impacts has been implemented in Panca Desa Banyuasin I by Serasan University. The program aimed to increase farmers' awareness and knowledge of the dangers of hazardous chemicals and encourage the adoption of more environmentally friendly agricultural practices. Several rubber farmers participated in extension and training that included materials on chemical management, organic fertilizer use, and environmentally friendly farming. The results of the activities showed that farmers' level of understanding of the materials improved significantly. However, farmers still need further guidance to completely abandon the use of chemicals. Initial changes in farming practices are starting to be seen, where farmers are starting to reduce direct contact with chemicals and consider organic alternatives. This activity is having a positive impact in minimizing health and environmental risks in Panca Desa Banyuasin I. However, to ensure sustainability, further assistance, financial support, and strengthening of policies related to environmentally friendly agricultural practices are needed.

Abstract

Abstract

Coffee farming was highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Exploring the strategies used by small farmers in Tanjung Agung Village has had a big impact on climate change. This study aimed to identify the level of knowledge, adaptation practices, and polyculture practices and types of shade trees used by coffee smallholders in facing climate change in Tanjung Agung Village, Semende Darat Ulu Regency. These strategies have made a significant difference. This study used a qualitative, survey-based approach. It also conducted data collection and analysis. This process was both simultaneous and cyclical coffee smallholders have noticed the effects of climate change in the last 1-2 years. Also, 35% of smallholders have known about climate change for the last 3-5 years. Coffee smallholders use indicators to predict climate change. These indicators include increased temperatures and shifts in the rainy and dry seasons. Water availability was also an indicator. Up to 90% of small farmers take steps to reduce climate change. These steps include using better types of coffee, planting trees for shade, and controlling how far apart the coffee plants were. Farmers also make air holes and use coffee bean skins to improve the soil. Our findings show that coffee smallholders understand climate change impacts well. They also quickly use strategies to adapt their crops to the changing climate. Smallholders use 16 types of shade crops as a strategy. The most widely used shade crops were petai, mango, avocado and durian.

Abstract

Coal mining exploitation generally uses open-pit mining techniques that have implications for environmental degradation, particularly changes in the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil. Revegetation of reclaimed land is a strategy for restoring ecosystem functions that have been disrupted by mining activities. This study aimed to evaluate the growth potential of Pterocarpus indicus through direct planting methods and to assess the effect of fertiliser type on plant growth acceleration on post-coal mining land. Field observations were used to measure plant growth parameters, including height, stem diameter, and number of leaves. The planting material used was stem cuttings, with variations in fertiliser treatment. Plant material type, fertiliser type, and application dose had a significant effect on plant growth variables (P<0.05). Duncan’s multiple range test indicated that the use of bokashi fertiliser at a dose of 3 kg per planting hole gave the best results, as evidenced by an average plant height of 104.38 cm, an average stem diameter of 37.692 cm, and a total of 21.99 leaves. Therefore, the direct planting method using stem cuttings as planting material with the application of bokashi fertiliser at a dose of 3 kg plays an important role in accelerating vegetation recovery in coal mine reclamation.
