Abstract

Responsive parenting contributes to positive adolescent development, including identity formation. However, previous research has not described the relationship between responsive parenting and identity formation. This research examines the role of future orientation as a mediator in the relationship between responsive parenting and identity formation. A total of 450 adolescents were involved in the study, which included early (12-15 years old), middle (15-18 years old), and late (18-20 years old) adolescents. Additionally, the Parental Responsiveness Scale, the Future subscale from the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, and the Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitment Scale were used to assess responsive parenting, future orientation, and identity formation. According to the results, future orientation can mediate the relationship between responsive parenting with commitment and in-depth exploration. Furthermore, this research found that responsive parenting can predict reconsideration of commitment. These findings indicate that this parenting has two sides, one being it can lead adolescents to develop future orientations, resulting in optimal identity formation. On the other hand, it directs adolescents to reconsider their commitments as an indicator of a suboptimal identity formation process.

Abstract

Responsive parenting contributes to the friendship quality formed in adolescents. Previous studies failed to fully explain the relationship process between responsive parenting and friendship quality. Empathy is one of the interpersonal skills formed through responsive parenting. Therefore, this study aims to examine the role of empathy in responsive parenting relations with friendship quality. A total of 450 respondents, including the early, middle, and late adolescents aged 12-15, 15-18, and 18-20 years, were selected as participants. Responsive parenting, empathy style, and friendship quality was measured using the Parental Responsiveness Scale, Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and the McGill Friendship Questionnaires-Friend's Functions. The research data were analyzed using regression analysis and Sobel test. The results showed that empathy is a mediator in the relationship between responsive parenting and friendship quality. Also, responsive parenting does not directly predict friendship quality but first develops fantasy and personal stress styles. Adolescents with high personal distress show sensitivity to the feelings and thoughts of their friends because the relationships formed are of higher quality.

Abstract

Abstract

The Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire (NARQ) was developed to measure theNarcissistic Admiration and Rivalry concept, as a new process model related to narcissism. This research aimed to adapt and validate the Indonesian version of the NARQ and involved 467 individuals aged 17- 25 years. Confirmatory factor analysis, reliability, and correlation test were used to test the factor structure, internal consistency, and criterion validity of the Indonesian version of the NARQ. The results show that the NARQ has the best factor structure in the form of a two-factor hierarchical model, representing two dimensions and six aspects of narcissistic admiration and rivalry. Also, the Indonesian version of the NARQ is supported by satisfactory reliability and validity criteria. This finding indicates that the Indonesian version of the NARQ is a measuring tool that can be used to assess narcissistic admiration and rivalry in individuals aged 17-25 years in Indonesia.

Abstract

Urban environments can help form cross-ethnic friendships among individuals. However, many parents impose restrictions on their children’s ability to develop friendships, particularly between Chinese and Javanese ethnic groups. These parental restrictions directly impact the quality of friendships and are believed to be mediated by self-efficacy. This study examined the role of self- efficacy as a mediator in the relationship between parental restrictions and the quality of cross- ethnic friendships. The study involved 400 emerging adults aged 18–25 years, comprising 200 Chinese and 200 Javanese individuals. Parents’ peer restriction, Cross-Ethnic Friendship Self- Efficacy, and McGill Friendship Questionnaires-Friendship Function were used to measure parental restriction, self-efficacy, and friendship quality. Hypotheses were tested using the Sobel test. The study found that self-efficacy did not mediate between parental restriction and friendship quality. The findings suggest considering the role of friendship duration on interethnic friendship quality consistent with the principles of proximity and homophily.

Abstract

Emerging adulthood will experience a phase of self-exploration and enter married life. Therefore, individuals must have an authoritarian personality to adapt to changing roles and rules. Authoritarian personality supports individuals’ married life because they must be submissive and obey the rules, values, norms, etc. This research investigated the relationship between authoritarian personality and marriage readiness in emerging adult women (Respondents number (N) =196). The technique employed was purposive sampling. The research instruments used the Authoritarian Personality Scale and the Marriage Readiness Scale. This study applied the Pearson Product-Moment hypothesis testing method. The results revealed a positive correlation between authoritarian personality and marriage readiness (r=.415, p=0.000). Besides, authoritarian personality was also correlated with all aspects of marriage readiness. For individuals in emerging adulthood, it is necessary to understand that a submissive and obedient attitude can help them to be better prepared to face a new life, namely marriage.

Abstract

Abstract. The identity formation of adolescents in a collective society is dependent on their significant relationship with other people. Therefore, this study aims to examine the role of parents and friends in adolescents’ identity formation in Indonesia. This research was conducted using a quantitative survey method involving 489 adolescents with 142, 178, and 169 in their early, middle, and late adolescent phases ranging from 12 to 21 years. Data collection was carried out on adolescents who are currently studying in Surabaya by using the convenience sampling method. The Indonesian version of the UtrechtManagement of Identity Commitments Scale, Shortened Version of Child's Report on Parent Behavior Inventory, Friendship Quality Scale, and Caregiving Questionnaire were used to measure the dimensions of identity, parenting, friendship quality, and support-giving. The hierarchical regression analysis was used to determine the role of the dimensions of parenting, friendship quality, and support giving gradually to identity formation. The results showed that parenting, friendship quality, and support contribute to commitment (R2= 0.291), in-depth exploration (R2= 0.241), and reconsideration of commitment (R2 = 0.110). It also indicates that the adolescent's identity formation in Indonesia embraces a collective culture inseparable from authority figures and peer groups. The implication of this research is that differences in the quality and form of relationships with parents and friends can lead to differences in adolescent identity formation. Keywords: adolescents; friendship; identity formation; Indonesia; parenting.

Abstract

Identity formation is an adolescent developmental task that continues throughout life. Its process cannot be separated from the role of the significant person for adolescents, including siblings. Therefore, this study aims to examine the identification process (modeling and de-identification) as a mediator in the relationship between sibling relationships in identity formations commitment, in-depth exploration, and reconsideration of commitment.  Four hundred adolescents aged 12-21 years participated in this study. The Indonesian version of the Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (U-MICS), the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (SRQ), and the Sibling Influence Scale (SIS) were used to measure identity formation, sibling relationship quality, and identification process. Data analysis was performed using regression analysis and the Sobel test. The results showed that the identification process could be a mediator between the quality of sibling relationships and identity formation. Also, the differences in quality among siblings lead adolescents to take different paths of the identification process, modeling, or de-identification, which impact the process of identity formation differences.  Adolescents involved in modeling can learn and imitate older siblings to achieve an optimal identity. On the other hand, adolescents involved in de-identification find it more difficult and experience more challenges in achieving an optimal identity

Abstract

Forming quality interfaith friendships is not impossible. Additionally, our society has become accustomed to differences. However, a clear explanation for the difficulty of forming such friendships has yet to be established. This study aimed to investigate the influence of tolerance and stigma consciousness on the quality of interfaith friendships. The research involved 400 respondents aged 18-25, comprising 200 Muslim respondents with at least one non-Muslim friend and 200 non-Muslim respondents with at least one Muslim friend. The quality of friendship was evaluated using the McGill Friendship Questionnaire (MFQ), while tolerance and stigma consciousness were measured using the Tolerance Index Questionnaire (TI) and Stigma Consciousness Questionnaire (SCQ), respectively. Multiple regression analysis was utilized to test the research hypothesis. The study results indicate that tolerance and stigma consciousness are significant factors in determining the quality of interfaith friendships. Individuals with tolerance and low levels of stigma consciousness are more likely to form quality interfaith friendships.

Abstract

Measuring instruments that have satisfactory psychometric properties are needed to improve mental health research and services, especially in the effort to measure, identify, and monitor psychological problems experienced by individuals. The purpose of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of the Indonesian version of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). The study involved 1922 participants aged 16-26 in Surabaya, Indonesia. Data collection was made using the convenience sampling method. Testing of the factor structure, reliability, and measurement invariance of the Indonesian version of the DASS was conducted using confirmatory factor analysis, composite reliability, and multi-group analysis. It was found that the bifactor model consisting of specific factors (depression, anxiety, and stress) and general factors (psychological distress) was the best factor structure of the Indonesian version of the DASS (GFI = .954, CFI = .956, RMSEA = .049). In addition, this version has satisfactory composite reliability (.806 – .917) and gender measurement is invariant. The findings indicate that the Indonesian version of the DASS was a valid and reliable measurement tool to measure and compare depression, anxiety, stress, and psychological distress between genders in the Indonesian sample.
