Abstract

Computational thinking is an essential skill in mathematics learning. However, many students still face difficulties in applying its aspects. This study aims to examine differences in students’ computational thinking ability in the context of data presentation based on math anxiety levels and computational thinking aspects, as well as the interaction between the two. A quantitative approach with a comparative descriptive desig was employed. The research subjects were 119 seventh-grade students of SMP IT Cordova Samarinda, selected using purposive sampling. Research instruments consisted of a math anxiety questionnaire and a computational thinking test covering four aspects: decomposition, pattern recognition, algorithm, and abstraction-generalization. Data were analyzed using the General Linear Model with Two Way Repeated Measures ANOVA. The results revealed significant differences in cmputational thinking ability based on math anxiety level, with a tendency for lower computational thinking ability among students with high math anxiety. Significant differences were also found across computational thinking aspects, with decomposition scoring the highest and abstraction-generalization the lowest. Howeve, no significant interaction was found between math anxiety level and computational thinking aspects. These findings highlight the importance of instructional approaches that consider affective factors to optimize the holistic development of students’ computational thinking across all aspects.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the character of a student with the greatest outdegree in Social Network Analysis (SNA) based on their group study partners. This research took 111 active students in the mathematics education study program at Universitas Mulawarman who were still taking courses. Research instrument in the form of a questionnaire name and NIM study friends. After forming the SNA structure, then select the node with the greatest outdegree and declare him/her as the true learner. This research used mixed methods, which means the researcher also interviewed the student declared as the node with the greatest outdegree. Based on the results, a student with NIM 2005046073 has the greatest outdegree of 22. This student was very active in asking her friends about the lecture material and their opinions regarding her understanding of the material. Furthermore, the student also gave tips on becoming a true learner on campus.

Abstract

The average mathematics score of eighth-grade students at MTsN Samarinda is still low (62.80). Students have difficulty solving modified problems, lack attention to detail, and show anxiety such as hesitation, lack of confidence, and fear of answering. This study aims to describe students' mathematical problem-solving abilities based on their level of mathematical anxiety in linear equation material. The research used a qualitative descriptive approach with eighth-grade students at MTsN Samarinda as the subjects. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that students with high anxiety have varying abilities: some experience difficulties in all stages of problem solving, but some are able to meet three indicators in some questions and only one indicator in other questions. They show somatic, cognitive, and attitudinal symptoms. Students with moderate anxiety are only able to meet three problem-solving indicators, with dominant symptoms in cognition and attitude. Meanwhile, students with low anxiety also showed varying abilities: some were able to meet all indicators on some questions, but others did not complete the final stage (rechecking) due to overconfidence and time constraints. The anxiety symptoms that appeared at low levels were mild and did not interfere with the problem-solving process.

Abstract

Textbooks play an important role in shaping students' understanding of statistical concepts. However, when conceptual representations emphasize procedural aspects rather than conceptual understanding, they may contribute to misconceptions. This study aims to analyze how the concept of the homogeneity of variance test is represented in educational statistics textbooks and to identify the potential misconceptions arising from these representations. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using document analysis. The data consisted of ten educational statistics and statistics-for-educational-research textbooks that are widely used in teacher education programs in Indonesia. Data were collected through document review and analyzed using qualitative content analysis, focusing on definitional, procedural, and conceptual representations, as well as potential misconceptions. The findings indicate that all textbooks present the F-test procedure by dividing the larger variance by the smaller variance. However, only a few textbooks explain the underlying concept of the F distribution, the rationale for placing the larger variance in the numerator, and the relationship between the F distribution and statistical decision-making. The dominance of procedural representations may lead students to the misconception that the larger variance must always be placed in the numerator and that the F statistic can never be less than one. These findings suggest that the current representation of the homogeneity of variance test in educational statistics textbooks does not adequately support the development of students' conceptual understanding. Therefore, a more balanced presentation integrating both procedural and conceptual aspects is needed to minimize potential misconceptions in statistics education.

Abstract

Algebraic generalization problems pose a significant challenge, requiring teachers to recognize influencing factors like Field Independent (FI) and Field Dependent (FD) cognitive styles. The purpose of this study was to apply binary logistic regression to map students' cognitive styles, either FI or FD, based on their error patterns when solving algebraic thinking generalization problems. These errors were classified using the five categories of Newman’s Theory: Reading (R), Comprehension (C), Transformation (T), Process Skill (S), and Encoding (E). This exploratory correlational study involved 40 tenth-grade students from SMA IT Granada Samarinda. Cognitive style (the dependent variable) was measured using the GEFT, while the Newman error categories (the independent variables) were identified from a generalization instrument adopted from TIMSS (2003–2019). The results found that 23 out of 40 students made mistakes, consisting of 9 FI students and 31 FD students. The binary logistic regression results showed that the Process Skill (S) error was the strongest predictor for the FI style, with an odds ratio of 18.025. This means that students who make an S error are 18 times more likely to be classified as FI. This finding leads to the conclusion that FI students struggle with the details of procedural implementation, despite possessing a strong strategic understanding. Binary logistic regression proved effective as a diagnostic tool to support more personalized mathematics learning strategies.
