Abstract

PlayerUnknown’s BattleGround Mobile is a shooting and survival game that include a team with four players in a team or squads. However, PlayerUnknown’s BattleGround Mobile game event was started in Kuala Lumpur on 29th November until 1th December 2019. This event has 16 (sixteen) teams from region of South East Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Middle East North Africa, South Asia, Korea and Japan. This event had two commentators for each day on the tournaments. As the object of this study, the researcher analyzed the commentator’s utterances as the purposes of this study are to find the jargon on the PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds Mobile game and analyze the word-formation process the jargons that the researcher had found on the commentator’s utterances by using the theory of George Yule (1996). Moreover, this research is using the descriptive qualitative research as the research design on this study. The findings of this study show that there are 22 (twenty-two) words classified as jargon of PUBG Mobile game. And 14 (fourteen) words as the word-formation process, they are categorized as acronyms (5 words), compound (6 words), derivation (2 words), and backformation (2 words).

Abstract

Gender inequality between men and women are still having the same core problematic in the real life. This research is aimed to answer the questions about the portrayal of the patriarchal system in the John Carter movie and the influence of patriarchal system towards Dejah Thoris’ life in that movie. This research used two theories, namely Johnson’s Patriarchal theory and Young’s Oppression theory. The method that had been used by the researcher was the qualitative method. The result of this research shows that there are four kinds of patriarchal system. First, men dominate in politic sphere, military and domestic field. Second, men are identified as the leaders who have the ability to control and dominate women. Third, men regularly are involved in any situation and they always become the center of attention in society. Lastly, men character in the movie shows their obsession with control, it proved by their passion to controlling over in wide scale both in private and public sphere. Then, the fact about how Dejah Thoris is the victim of the oppressor that makes her life exploited, marginalized, less of power, forced by cultural imperialism, and treated violently. Despite, she resists to be silent and accept her path as an inferior person, however, she still be taken out and neglected.

Abstract

This research analyzes the principle behind the socialist feminism movement through the female characters in Cherry Orchard drama. Socialist feminism becomes the struggle to get equal in social and economic. This research classifies the female characters into four principles behind the socialist feminism movement, that uses the socialist feminism theory by Mandell. This research uses the qualitative-descriptive method to analyze the principles behind socialist feminism through the four female characters' experiences in Cherry Orchard drama. There are four principles behind the socialist feminism movement those are women’s position, women’s rights, women’s role, and women’s participation.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out types of presupposition. Yule’s theory of types of presupposition is used by the researcher to find out and describe the types of presupposition found in “The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007)” movie. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. The object of this research is a movie entitled “The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007)” directed by Jay Russell. The data were taken from all scenes including the utterances uttered by speaker and heard by the interlocutors. The data source of this research is the movie script of “The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007)”. In collecting data, the researcher chose the data which are all of the types of presupposition uttered by main characters in the movie. The researcher conducted observation by repeatedly watching, taking notes and classifying utterances for the type of presupposition uttered by the main characters in the movie. The researcher found 4 of 6 Yule’s six types of presupposition theory uttered by the characters in the movie. Those four types of presupposition are 46 utterances of existential presupposition which is the most frequently type uttered by the characters in this research, 11 utterances of structural presupposition, 9 utterances of lexical presupposition and the last least frequently type uttered by the characters is counter-factual presupposition which has 4 utterances only.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify the kinds of women empowerment dimension portrayed in the movie through Josey as the main female character. Women empowerment has been an issue of immense discussion and contemplation over the last few decades worldwide. This research discusses about women’s empowerment in North Country movies, and investigates further about Josey Aiems as the main character that showed women power in this movie. In addition, Jo Rowland’s theory is employed as the main theoretical basis to answer the research question. The main data of this research were the dialogues, characters’ characters’ attitudes and beliefs that were related to the research questions in this research. The results of the study are based on the analysis of the research questions about dimension empowerment which is personal, relational and collective to support the empowerment of others in community the dimension makes the power getting stronger than before, and women become able to organize themselves to increase their independent right to make choices.

Abstract

Gothic stories have a distinctive feature of presenting suspense and horror elements in each of their elements that make the audience both scared and curious as they watch the scenes in a Gothic movie. This research examines Gothic elements in Dark Shadows (2021) movie. The purpose of this study is to identify the Gothic elements in the Dark Shadows (2012) movie. This research used structuralism approach to determine the intrinsic elements and the theory of Gothic elements from Robert Harris in identifying the Gothic elements contained in the Dark Shadows (2012) movie. The method of data analysis is descriptive qualitative research. The data used in this research were taken from the narrative, monologue, dialogue in the script, and the actions of the six main characters in the Dark Shadows (2012) movie directed by Tim Burton. The results of this study indicate that there are nine from eleven Gothic elements found in the Dark Shadows movie. All the nine Gothic elements in this movie displayed in five intrinsic elements.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find the femininity characteristics and identity developments as a homosexual in the character of Dante of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secret of Universe novel. This research was categorized as descriptive qualitative research and was using content analysis approach. The researcher used Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secret of Universe novel as the source of data. The data were taken from the dialogues between characters and narrations that indicating Dante’s femininity characteristics based on Bem theory and his identity development as a homosexual based on Cass theory. From the finding of this research, it reveals that the character of Dante possess 16 out of 20 femininity characteristics which are affectionate, cheerful, childlike, compassionate, eager to soothe hurt feelings, feminine, gentle, gullible, sensitive of the needs of others, loyal, soft spoken, sympathetic, tender, understanding, warm, and yielding. Dante also fulfills 4 out of 6 identity developments which are identity of confusion, comparison, tolerance and acceptance. The character of Dante has femininity characteristics and he experiences the identity development phases to be a homosexual.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon and Patsey characters of 12 Years A Slave movie. In order to do so, this study used Allport’s theory of intentional, explicit discrimination focusing on several types of racial discrimination such as verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. The data used in this study were words in forms of narration, dialogue, and action related to the portrayal of racial discrimination towards Solomon and Patsey characters that were taken from 12 Years A Slave movie script. This study showed that the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon and Patsey characters of 12 Years A Slave movie was classified into five types of intentional, explicit discrimination behaviours such as verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. On one hand, the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon character was included as verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. On the other hand, the portrayal as shown in Patsey character was a bit different since Patsey did not experience any segregation treatment. This study concluded the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon and Patsey characters occured as the result of white supremacy ideology as the basis thinking and belief of most white characters in the movie.

Abstract

In this research, the researcher shows the forms of oppression which occur toward female character named Lakshmi. The five faces of oppression is a theory that is explained by Irish Marion Young. The kinds of oppression toward women can be found in Lakshmi’s character of Sold novel. This form of oppression somehow called as injustice action that adhere toward people or group because of several reasons, such as class, race and gender. The source of data of this study are collected from Patricia McCormick’s Sold novel and the data for this study is the evidence of oppression toward Lakshmi. The oppression is divided into exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism and violence. The results of this study are, Lakshmi got five faces oppression from group or person. Based on that analysis, the researcher concludes that the oppression toward women can be done by men also women. Therefore, the researcher believes that the oppression toward women is not happens because of gender that men is superior rather than women, but oppression can be happened due to power of domination and class.

Abstract

Recently, there have been many movies that are made based on novels. Crazy Rich Asian is one of the movies based on a novel because the novel came first, then that was made into the movie. The purposes of this research are to find out the similarities and differences of the intrinsic elements in the movie and the novel and reveal the plot changes. This research used Robert Stanton’s theory to describe the intrinsic elements that cover facts, themes, and literary devices. Meanwhile, the ecranisation theory by Pamusuk Eneste is employed to reveal the plot changes, thus including additions, reductions, and changes of both works. The data sources come from novels and movies, shown by quotes, narration, dialogue, and scenes. The results found in this research between the novel’s plot and movies show twenty-six differences in intrinsic elements of both works. After that, seven additions, five reductions, and six changes or modifications occurred in the story’s plot. In conclusion, this research implies that differences, similarities, and changes can occur when a novel is made into a movie.
