Abstract

Abstract

Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) is one of the plantations commodities in Indonesia. The most abundant part of the cacao plant are the brown leaves. Cacao leaves contain several secondary metabolite compounds, one of which is tannin. Tannin has several properties, such as being astringent, antidiarrheal, antibacterial, and antioxidant. This research aims to determine the comparison of tannin compound levels from the ethanol extract of cacao leaves (Theobroma cacao L.) using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. Samples were taken from three areas, namely Jeneponto, Wajo, and Malino. This research method begins with sample preparation by maceration with a 96% ethanol solvent, then a qualitative analysis test is carried out using the Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) method, and a quantitative analysis test is carried out by standard measurement of tannic acid and determination of tannin content using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a maximum wavelength of 756 nm. The results showed that the ethanol extract of cacao leaves (Theobroma cacao L.) was positive for containing tannin compounds and had total tannin levels in the Jeneponto area (86.244 mgEAT/g extract), Wajo (79,417 mgEAT/g extract), and Malino (79.365 mgEAT/g extract). From the results above, it shows that the ethanol extract of cacao leaves from the Jeneponto area contains the highest levels of tannin compounds compared to the other two areas.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance necessitates the exploration of alternative treatments such as medicinal plants. This study evaluates the antibacterial potential of Kersen flowers (Muntingia calabura L.) against pathogens causing gastrointestinal infections. Aimed at determining the antibacterial effectiveness of ethanol extracts from Kersen flowers, the research tests the activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Vibrio cholerae, and Shigella dysenteriae. Employing the agar diffusion method, various concentrations of the extract (0.05% to 10%) were analyzed. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were also assessed to identify the lowest effective concentrations. The ethanol extract demonstrated significant antibacterial activity; notably, the largest inhibition zone measured 30.74 mm at a concentration of 10%. Effective MICs were as low as 0.1% for all tested bacteria, while MBCs ranged from 0.1% to 0.4%. These results suggest that ethanol extracts of Kersen flowers exhibit potent antibacterial properties against major gastrointestinal pathogens, supporting further exploration of these extracts as a natural antibacterial treatment and offering a potential alternative to conventional antibiotics.

Abstract

In the province of West Nusa Tenggara, the purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which salary levels, educational levels, and working hours have an impact on the capacity of the formal sector to absorb labor. From 2013 to 2023, this analysis makes use of secondary data in the form of time series derived from publications by the Bureau of Public Statistics. This research was conducted utilizing the OLS (ordinary least square) approach, which was carried out with the help of the Eviews 12 software. According to the findings of the research, the influence of independent variables on the dependent variable only accounts for 99.5% of the total, while the remaining 5% is influenced by other variables that are not related to this study. It is possible to draw the conclusion that the salary level variable has a positive and substantial influence on the formal sector labor absorption variable in NTB. On the other hand, the education level and working hours variables do not have a positive and significant effect on this variable. At the same time, it is possible to draw the conclusion that the salary level variable has a substantial influence simultaneously (at the same time), whereas the education level and working hours variables do not have an effect and are not significant on the capacity of the formal sector to absorb labor in NTB.
