Abstract

The transition of State Islamic Colleges (IAIN/STAIN) to State Islamic Universities (UIN) marks a fundamental shift in the institutional structure and epistemology of Islamic higher education in Indonesia. This article critically investigates the new form of UIN following the transformation era, which successfully integrated Islamic sciences with modern disciplines. Institutional transformation and the development of Islamic thought through an integrative, academic, and contextual paradigm have contributed to this successful transition. This reflects how UIN transformation has become more accommodative and inclusive, with deliberate efforts to integrate various fields of religious and modern sciences. This research is based on a qualitative study using document analysis, expert interviews, and focus group discussions. The article also traces the early dynamics of academic Islamic studies, the emergence of the conversion project, and examines its evolution in the current post-reform era. It argues that significant institutional dynamics and epistemological shifts have revived the academic and critical paradigm of Islamic sciences. Thus, UIN has emerged as a center for multidisciplinary Islamic intellectual currents that are responsive to humanitarian issues and global Islamic academic discourse.

Abstract

Abstract

Suspicion of Salafi as  terrorist and extremist organization increased after 9/11. Many studies have found that the Salafi ideology contains an exclusive and harsh doctrine of Wahhabism. This article examines the Salafi madrasas which was initially exclusive, rigid, conservative, and anti-state symbols, then transformed into a formal Islamic school that is modern and professional in management, as well as integrating the national education curriculum with Islamic curriculum (diniyyah/boarding school) as a strategy to gain state recognition. Although it is not carried out in all Islamic educational institutions it manages, the transformation of the Salafi madrasas is intended to remove the suspicions of the people who consider them terrorist and extremist group. Therefore, this article also explains the Salafi typology which is divided into two based on the movement model, namely the Ideological Salafi (Purification) and the Jihadist Salafi. Through the multicultural education approach that was written by Bikhu Parekh, this research suggests the implications of the ideas of salafism that are disseminated to the multicultural Indonesian society. This research finds that the Salafi campaign in Indonesia has not completely failed. Salafi madrasas have succeeded in transforming through curriculum integration which aims to reject public suspicion that they are terrorist organizations, in fact this strategy actually attracts upper-middle class people to send their children to Salafi madrasas.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perspectives on social capital in fostering religious moderation among students, particularly in the Faculty of Islamic Studies at Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta. This study employs a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach with a case study method, involving 12 students from the Islamic Religious Education Study Program in semesters 2–6 as research subjects, selected through purposive sampling. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observations, and review of supporting documents, both primary and secondary. The results of the study indicate that social capital has a significant role in internalizing the values of moderation among various students. Students who have extensive social networks, mutual trust, and active involvement in student organizations tend to exhibit a more open, inclusive, and tolerant attitude towards religion. Factors that influence the formation of students’ social capital include: (1) the multicultural social environment of the campus, (2) involvement in student organizations, (3) the role of lecturers and educational policy institutions, and (4) personal experiences and family background. These four factors contribute to the formation of students’ moderate character in religion and social interactions.
