Abstract

This article tries to study the kinds, study areas, and discourse of religious literatures in the pesantrens of Husnul Khotimah and Binaul Ummah, Kuningan Jawa Barat; to know religious discourse, especially in the areas of akidah (faith) and akhlak (morals); and to recognize the characteristics of religious theology of the pesantrens as well as the socio-religious doctrines developed in both of these pesantrens. This research is a field research. The methods of data collecting used in this research are literature study, documentation, interoiew, and participant obseroation. The characterstics of theology which are easily recognized in the the Pesantren of Husnul Khotimah and Binaul Ummah are the theology based on Asy'ariyah and Hanbali characteristics. Based on the moral (akhlak) aspect, both of these pesantrens rely it on some of Hasan Al-Bann as views, especially in the book of Rukn al-'Amal au Manhajal-Islah al-Islami Ii al-Fard wa alMujtama: i.e. the characters of Muslim generation as follow: 1) Quwwah al-Jism, 2) Matanah al-Khulq, 3) Saqafah al-Fikr, 4) al-Qudrah 'ala al-Kasb, 5) Salamah al-'Aqidah, 6) Sihhah al- 'Ibadah, 7) Mujahadah al-Nafs, 8) al-Hirs 'ala al-Waqt, 9) AI-Nizam fi Syu’un killiha, 10) al-Nafu Ii al-Gair Key Words: Theology, Religious Literatures, Pesantren, Jawa Barat

Abstract

The objective of this paper is an examination of the religious inscriptions found in the cemetery of the kings of Mempawah, an Islamic kingdom in Ponti-anak Regency, West Kalimantan. The pioneer research focuses on an inventory and description of field data collected at the graveyard. It documents examples of the inscriptions and their transliterations which are then classified according to the contents and style of calligraphy.

Abstract

The Islamic transformation should have not occurred if it remained consistency with its assessment. Any movements or groups of extremist, terrorist, fundamentalist, radical, or whatever its name is considered a hard act towards its teachings and implementations, must be separated from the mainstream Muslims and should be seen throughout their contexts. It should also be understood as the teaching of Islam and Islam as practiced. The capital pluralism should be used as a basis for strengthening the unity and integrity, not seen as barriers. Muslims are in need of conflict management to resolve issues that are faced by the Muslims.

Abstract

Penelitian ini merupakan kajian atas pemikiran Syekh Abd Al-Samad Al-Palimbani Tentang Jihad sebagimana tertuang dalam Naskah Nasīhah Al-Muslimīn Wa Tazkirah Al-Mu’Minīn. Ada tiga naskah yang ditemukan berkaitan dengan naskan ini, yaitu di Perpustakaan Nasional dua naskah (A 209 dan W 51) dan di Perpustakaan Umariyah, Palembang satu naskah. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui konsep jihad menurut Al-Palimbani tentang keutamaan dan kemuliaan mujahidin dan memosisikan naskah karya Al-Palimbani dalam konteks sosial politik di Nusantara pada abad ke-18, baik pada wacana keagamaan Nusantara masa itu maupun dalam konteks kolonialisme Barat, dan relevansinya dengan masa kini. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian sejarah dengan pendekatan interdisipliner terutama pendekatan filologis dan kajian teks. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa Naskah Nasīhah Al-Muslimīn Wa Tazkirah Al-Mu’Minī relatif masih dapat dibaca, dan dari tiga naskah tersebut tidak ada perbedaan, baik dari segi isi maupun sistematika pembahasannya. Naskah ini terdiri atas tujuh pasal dan bagian penutup. Mengenai konsep jihad, al-Palimbani tidak memberikan definisi yang jelas sebab beliau hanya mengutipkan ayat-ayat, hadis dan pendapat ulama seputar, misalnya, perintah jihad, keutamaannya, keutamaan mujahidin, dan apa saja yang harus dipersiapkan dalam jihad. Naskah ini tampaknya sengaja ditulis dalam bahasa Arab, berbeda dengan karya-karyanya yang lain seperti Sair al-Salikin yang ditulis dalam bahasa Melayu. Pemilihan bahasa Arab menjadikan naskah ini tidak saja dapat diakses oleh masyarakat Nusantara tetapi juga oleh wilayah Dunia Islam yang lain, khususnya Timur Tengah. Dalam konteks kolonialisme, naskah ini sangat menggugah semangat jihad atau perjuangan melawan penjajah, khususnya Belanda.Kata Kunci: Jihad, pemikiran, naskah, sejarah

Abstract

This study aims to elaborate on the rise of The At-Taqwa Grand Mosque as the Jami' mosque and the long-standing great mosque of Sang Cipta Rasa in Cirebon, West Java, in 1963. The emergence of the At-Taqwa not only drove the rise of new Jami mosques in the Cirebon in the following years but also brought about the contestation of religious authority since mosques function as a source of religious authority in Islam. The study rests on the history of the Great Mosque of Sang Cipta Rasa as the first Jami Mosque in Cirebon, the emergence of the At-Taqwa as the Grand Mosque, and the implications of the two Jami mosques in the context of contesting the authority of religiosity in the Muslim community in Cirebon. The method used in this study is based on a historical analysis approach. The study shows that the Sang Cipta Rasa enjoyed as the source of religious authority in Cirebon and neighborhood areas for an extended period. However, the rise of the Grand Mosque of At-Taqwa also diminished the stature of the Sang Cipta Rasa mosque as the sole source of religious authority. On the other hand, it further strengthened the spreading of their authority in Cirebon based on mosques.

Abstract

This article is based on review on Sejarah Kawasan Dunia Islam, by Ajid Thohir. The book summarizes the reality of the Islamic World in the real context of Islamic society. It can provide early recognition for whom study Islam in different regions. The study of it is becoming more and more i­n­teresting when looking at each geo-political region faced global accumu­lation, how they raise local ideology and establish the boundaries of geo-politics and geography, as well as identity and modernity. The study of Islamic history reveals various aspects of the life of Muslim communities in the local context necessitates a fair view of the Muslim community at the site concerned, but again shows the diversity in unity.

Abstract

This article attempts to trace the early history of Islam in Temasek, a former name of Singapore. The city was also known as the ‘Sea Town’, and was a part of the Nusantara. In the 12th-14th century, Tumasik and Kedah were important ports in the Malay Peninsula. Tumasik, at that time, was important enough to figure in international trade networks. The very strategic location of Tumasik, at the very tip of the Malay Peninsula, made it a significant prize for the master. Kingdoms that once ruled it: the Sriwijaya kingdom until the end of the 13th century AD and Majapahit kingdom that ruled it until the 14th century. In the 15th century AD, Tumasik came under the rule of Ayutthaya-Thailand; and subsequent occupation controlled by the Sultanate of Malacca to the Portuguese in 1511 AD. Speaking on the comming of Islam in Tumasik that was along with the influx of Muslim merchants, both Arabic and Persian, between the 8th – 11th century which the trading activity increased in the Archipelago. Coastal cities and ports, one of which Tumasik, on the Malay Peninsula became the settlements of Muslim tradespeople. Most of them settled and married there. Thus, it is strongly suspected that Islam has been present in Tumasik since perhaps the 8th century AD. Up until the beginning of the 16th century, the old Singapore remains a Muslim settlement, along with other vendors, both from Europe, India, and China, and also became an important port under the Sultanate of Malacca. That Malaccan empire was conquered by the Portuguese in 1511. Keywords: early history of Islam, Tumasik, Singapore, Sultanate of Malacca Artikel ini mencoba menelusuri sejarah awal Islam di Tumasik, kada disebut juga Temasek, nama dulu bagi Singapura. Kota ini juga disebut sebagai Kota Laut (Sea Town), dan merupakan bagian dari Nusantara masa lalu. Pada abad ke-12 s.d. 14 M, Tumasik bersama Kedah merupakan pelabuhan-pelabuhan penting di Semenanjung Malaya. Pada masa itu, Tumasik merupakan kota perdagangan yang cukup besar dan penting dalam jaringan perdagangan internasional. Posisinya yang sangat strategis di ujung Semenanjung Malaya, menjadikan Tumasik menggiurkan untuk dikuasai. Kerajaan-kerajaan yang pernah menguasai Tumasik yaitu Sriwijaya sampai akhir abad ke-13 M dan Majapahit sampai abad ke-14 M. Pada abad ke-15 M, Tumasik berada di bawah kekuasaan Ayutthaya-Thailand; dan selanjutnya dikuasai Kesultanan Malaka sampai pendu¬dukan Portugis 1511 M. Adapun proses masuknya Islam di Tumasik terjadi bersamaan dengan masuknya para pedagang Muslim, baik dari Arab maupun Persia pada abad ke-8 s.d. 11 M yang mengalami peningkatan aktivitas perdagangan. Kota-kota pesisir dan pelabuhan-pelabuhan, salah satunya Tumasik, di Semenanjung Malaya menjadi pemukiman-pemukiman bagi para pedagang Muslim tersebut. Sebagian dari mereka menetap dan berkeluarga di sana. Dengan demikian, diduga kuat bahwa Islam telah hadir di Tumasik antara abad ke-8 M - ke 11 M. Hingga permulaan abad ke-16 M, Singapura lama tetap menjadi pemukiman Muslim, bersama para pedagang lain, baik dari Eropa, India, maupun Cina, dan sekaligus menjadi pelabuhan penting di bawah kekuasaan Kesultanan Malaka, sampai dengan kesultanan ini ditaklukan oleh Portugis pada 1511 M. Abstract

This paper discusses the biography of K.H. Abdul Halim, a cleric, educator, political activist, a national hero, who was born in Jatiwangi, Majalengka, West Java on June 26, 1887 and died on May 7, 1962, in a peaceful and quiet place, Santi Asromo, Majalengka. The title of the National Hero from the Government of Indonesia was granted on the basis of his important roles in education, economics and politics. Among his legacy are the religious educational institutions, namely Santi Asromo Pesantren, the religious organization of the Islamic Ummah Union (PUI), and several books such as the Kitab Petunjuk bagi Sekalian Manusia (Manual for Man), Ekonomi dan Koperasi dalam Islam (Economics and Cooperative in Islam), dan Ketetapan Pengajaran di Sekolah Ibtidaiyah Persyarikatan Ulama (The Teaching Decrees at Ibtidaiyah Persyarikatan Ulama School). His biography is a manifestation of appreciation for his services and works, his struggle and his devotion to science and people, as well as his role and contribution in building the nation of Indonesia with noble character and dignity. Another milestone of his is the value of the struggle and at the same time his Islamic scholarship can be an example for the younger generation in particular and for anyone who aspires to build a nation of Indonesia which is based on the Belief in One God, fair and civilized, united in the context of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).Keywords: Kiai, Education, Pesantren, Majalengka, West JavaTulisan ini mengangkat biografi K.H. Abdul Halim dan gagasannya tentang pendidikan ekonomi di pesantren. Ia memiliki nama kecil Otong Syatori, dikenal sebagai ulama pejuang, pendidik, dan aktivis politik. Ia dilahirkan di Desa Ciborelang, Kecamatan Jatiwangi, Majalengka, Jawa Barat, pada 26 Juni 1887, dan wafat dalam usia 75 tahun pada 7 Mei 1962, di Santi Asromo, Majalengka. Ia mendapat gelar Pahlawan Nasional dari Pemerintah RI tahun 2008. Perjuangannya meliputi pendidikan, ekonomi, dan politik. Adapun metode yang digunakan dalam tulisan ini adalah deskriptif-analitis dengan perspektif historis. Adapun fokusnya, selain biografi singkat K.H. Abdul Halim, juga tentang konsep pendidikan ekonomi berbasis pesantren. Dari hasil pembahasan ditemukan bahwa ia telah melakukan pembaharuan di bidang pendidikan agama dan sekaligus memberikan keterampilan kewirausahaan bagi santri dan lulusannya. Awalnya gagasan tersebut berasal dari konsep pembaharuannya yang disebut Iṣlāḥ as-Ṡamāniyyah, yaitu: perbaikan akidah, ibadah, pendidikan, keluarga, kebiasaan (adat), masyarakat, ekonomi, dan hubungan umat dan tolong-menolong. Di bidang pendidikan, ia memadukan sistem pesantren dengan sistem sekolah, ilmu-ilmu agama dengan ilmu-ilmu umum, serta memberkali para santrinya dengan berbagai keterampilan tangan dan keahlian teknik. Di bidang ekonomi, disebutnya dengan Iṣlāḥ al-Iqtiṣād, untuk menanggulangi ketimpangan ekonomi di masyarakat, yaitu dengan menanamkan kesadaran kepada kaum muslimin agar berusaha memperbai¬ki dan meningkatkan kehidupan ekonominya dan berjuang secara bersama-sama melalui wadah koperasi.Kata kunci: Abdul Halim, Santi Asromo, pendidikan ekonomi, Iṣlāḥ as-Ṡamāniyyah, Iṣlāḥ al-Iqtiṣād

Abstract

A number of traditional historiographies are narrated in manuscripts from Cirebon, not a few that mention religious moderation. However, the babad manuscripts tend to change their perspective when it enters the Colonialism era. The narrative of tolerance between ethnic groups or between religions was experiencing serious friction. There is a manuscript that comes from the Cirebon tradition, which narrates implicitly about religious moderation in the early eras of the development of Islam and the port cities, namely Serat Carub Kandha. This article discusses three issues related to religious moderation in Serat Carub Kandha, namely: (1) the context behind the writing and copying of the Serat Carub Kandha manuscript; (2) the narrative of religious moderation in the Serat Carub Kandha; (3) Its relevance for current religious life in Indonesia. The source that was used as the primary material for the research was the Serat Carub Kandha manuscript, the collection of Rafan Hasyim in Cirebon, written by Pegon. With a philological and hermeneutic approach, this article shows that the Serat Carub Kandha manuscript is historical evidence and collective memory of the practice of religious moderation in Indonesia's past, especially on the north coast of West Java. The moderation narrative that has emerged is about respecting other religions, accommodating local culture, and anti-violence. Keywords: Babad manuscripts, Cirebon, religious moderation, Serat Carub Kandha   Sejumlah historiografi tradisional yang dinarasikan dalam naskah-naskah (manuscripts) asal Cirebon, tidak sedikit yang menyinggung tentang moderasi beragama. Namun demikian, kecenderungan naskah babad mengalami pergeseran perspektif ketika memasuki era kolonialisme bangsa-bangsa Eropa. Narasi toleransi antar suku bangsa atau antar agama mengalami gesekan serius. Terdapat sebuah naskah yang berasal dari tradisi Cirebon, yang menarasikan secara implisit tentang moderasi beragama pada era-era awal perkembangan Islam dan kota-kota pelabuhan, yaitu Serat Carub Kandha. Artikel ini membahas tiga masalah terkait dengan moderasi beragama dalam Serat Carub Kandha, yakni: (1) konteks yang melatari penulisan dan penyalinan naskah Serat Carub Kandha; (2) narasi moderasi beragama dalam naskah Serat Carub Kandha; (3) Relevansinya bagi kehidupan beragama saat ini di Indonesia. Sumber yang dijadikan bahan primer penelitian adalah naskah Serat Carub Kandha koleksi Rafan Hasyim di Cirebon dalam tulisan Pegon. Dengan pendekatan filologis dan hermenutik, artikel ini menunjukkan bahwa Naskah Serat Carub Kandha menjadi bukti historis dan memori kolektif tentang praktik moderasi beragama di masa lalu Indonesia, khususnya di kawasan pesisir utara Jawa Barat. Narasi moderasi yang mengemuka adalah tentang sikap menghargai agama lain, akomodatif terhadap kebudayaan lokal, dan anti kekerasan.   Kata kunci: Cirebon, manuskrip Babad, moderasi beragama, Serat Carub Kandha
