Abstract

Despite the increasing complexity of contemporary maritime operations, conventional English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approaches in maritime vocational education inadequately prepare shipping management students for the complex multimodal, digital, and sociocultural communicative demands these operations require. This study investigates the design, implementation, and efficacy of a Multiliteracy Pedagogy-Based Maritime English Communication Learning Model (MPKBIM) for vocational shipping management students in Indonesian maritime institutes. Drawing on systemic functional linguistics (SFL), genre-based pedagogy, multiliteracy theory, and critical ESP, a quasi-experimental design, informed by a mixed-methods needs analysis that shaped the curriculum prior to implementation, was employed with 120 vocational students across traditional and multiliteracy-enhanced curricula over one academic year. Data were collected through pre- and post-intervention assessments, communicative genre portfolios, classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews with 36 maritime professionals, 18 instructors, and 48 students. Results demonstrate that MPKBIM students significantly outperformed comparison students in multimodal communication (78% vs. 31%), digital communication competence (72% vs. 38%), and critical communicative understanding. The study provides empirical evidence that multiliteracy pedagogy effectively bridges the gap between conventional maritime English training and the actual communicative demands of contemporary maritime management, offering a theoretically grounded and empirically validated curriculum model for maritime vocational education reform.

Abstract

Sustainability is becoming a critical focus within maritime education, leadership, and workforce development as the industry adapts to evolving environmental regulations and safety imperatives. This research explores the integration of sustainability principles in maritime training programs and leadership frameworks, addressing gaps in workforce development and the application of sustainable practices. The study provides original insights by examining qualitative perspectives from maritime professionals, educators, and graduates, complementing previous research by offering empirical evidence on sustainability in vocational education. The primary objective was to investigate how sustainability is embedded within maritime education and leadership, focusing on its role in fostering safety cultures and environmental responsibility. The research employed a qualitative approach, combining systematic literature review (SLR) with interviews and questionnaires involving ten maritime stakeholders. The results indicate a strong alignment between sustainability goals and educational frameworks, with leadership emerging as a key driver of sustainable practices. While overall scores reflect significant progress, the findings highlight areas for enhancing workforce development, particularly in reinforcing environmental responsibility. The study underscores the importance of leadership in shaping sustainable organizational cultures and advocates for more comprehensive, sustainability-focused curricula in maritime vocational programs. The conclusions emphasize the need for greater collaboration between educational institutions and industry leaders to ensure cohesive progress in sustainability adoption. This research contributes to shaping a future maritime workforce that is technically proficient, environmentally conscious, and safety-driven.

Abstract

The low performance of PT. Tanto Intim Line Pelayaran Nusantara employees is reflected in the quantity and quality of their work, which do not meet the company’s targets. Organizational culture, particularly the Kaizen philosophy rooted in continuous improvement, has been widely recognized as a critical determinant of employee productivity and operational efficiency in the maritime logistics sector. Therefore, the research team aims to use this study to analyze the organizational culture—specifically, a culture focused on Kaizen (5S: Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, Shitsuke)—and its impact on the performance of ship cargo handling at the shipping company PT. Tanto Intim Line Pelayaran Nusantara. The research method employed by the team is a quantitative descriptive method utilizing simple linear regression analysis. The population and sample size consist of 30 respondents from the ship loading and unloading division, and the sampling technique used is saturation sampling (census). Data were collected through closed-ended questionnaires and company documentation. Instrument validity was verified using Pearson product-moment correlation (r-table = 0.361, α = 0.05), and reliability was confirmed through Cronbach’s alpha (α > 0.60). The results of the research indicate that the Kaizen culture has a positive and significant influence on the performance of ship cargo handling, as evidenced by a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.751, a coefficient of determination (R²) of 56.5%, and a t-test value of 6.026 > t-table 2.048 (sig. 0.000 < 0.05). These findings confirm that implementing Kaizen culture contributes substantially to improving operational performance in maritime cargo handling operations.

Abstract

The IMO 2050 decarbonization strategy presents global shipping enterprises with a defining strategic paradox: the need to simultaneously maximize operational efficiency from existing conventional fleet assets while investing in the exploration of transformative sustainability innovations — a challenge that resonates profoundly with the strategic management concept of organizational ambidexterity. This study examines how global maritime enterprises manage the tension between exploitation of existing capabilities and exploration of new sustainability competencies in pursuit of IMO 2050 targets. Employing a qualitative research design grounded in thematic analysis, the study engages thirty senior executives and strategic management professionals from leading global shipping companies, maritime investment firms, and international regulatory organizations. Findings reveal three distinct ambidexterity configurations — structural, contextual, and temporal — and identify five organizational enabling conditions that distinguish successfully ambidextrous maritime enterprises from those caught in strategic trade-off paralysis. The study contributes to both strategic management theory and maritime management scholarship by advancing the application of ambidexterity concepts in capital-intensive, heavily regulated global industries.
