Abstract

This study investigates the utilization of Instagram as a tool for enhancing English language learning among higher education students. Amidst the growing influence of social media on student lifestyles, the research aimed to harness Instagram's potential for educational purposes, particularly in language acquisition. Employing a Design and Development (D&D) approach with the four-dimensional (4D) model - Define, Design, Development, and Dissemination - the study focused on creating and implementing English learning materials tailored for the Instagram platform. The research methodology included the use of a questionnaire to assess the effectiveness of the instructional materials. These materials were validated by a panel consisting of two media experts, two language experts, and two material experts, ensuring content validity. The study involved a purposively selected sample of 30 students, emphasizing first-semester English majors who were active Instagram users. This approach facilitated an evaluation of the reliability and validity of the instructional materials and the research instrument. Key findings indicated that Instagram as a learning platform significantly boosted student engagement and interaction in English language learning. The study revealed the importance of social media, particularly Instagram, in fostering a more interactive and engaging learning environment. However, the research faced limitations due to its reliance on self-reported data and its focus on a specific student demographic. The study recommends future research to expand beyond first-semester English majors and explore various social media content types for effective educational outcomes. Longitudinal studies and qualitative research methods are suggested to gain deeper insights into student interactions with social media in educational contexts. This research underscores the potential of integrating social media platforms like Instagram into educational curricula, tailored to the digital habits and preferences of contemporary students.

Abstract

This study examines the techniques used by ESP Math lecturers, the challenges they have in providing ESP learning materials, how they overcome these challenges, and the implications for ESP design. This study employed a qualitative research design by interviewing five ESP Mathematics lecturers teaching at STKIP PGRI Sidoarjo in the 2022-2023 academic year. 15 items of interview guidelines were prepared to gain a deeper understanding of what respondents have done in implementing the techniques of teaching ESP for Mathematics. The data were then examined using an interactive analysis process. The survey found that several of the lecturers had issues with vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and speaking fluency. The instructors overcame the obstacles by working together with other instructors and studying from printed and digital resources to better their command of the English language. Additionally, they utilized a web-based learning management system to aid in their education and facilitate the creation of instructional materials. It meant that the development of ESP for math educators had to concentrate on four areas: vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. The ESP curriculum might be developed using any number of platforms, including ones that cater to linguistics and mathematics.

Abstract

The Synchronous Model has become an important part of the development of learning in the 4.0 era. Online learning for teaching English has become a trend that continues to grow and is developed based on the development of Special English (ESP). The Synchronous Model is a media model developed by researchers as the website Synchronous which has been popular in Indonesia and is being developed. However, this review of the Synchronous Model learning in ESP is still relatively rarely developed in the post-pandemic period, preparing rich and reliable Synchronous technology-based learning that is very meaningful and reliable in the future. This technology enhances the scientific nature of English language education in public health at colleges and at the university level. So, this review systematically identifies trends in Synchronous-based learning in ESP for Public Health courses. Data tracking in this study was conducted using Harzing’s Publish or Perish (PoP) application with three databases used, including Google Scholar (GS), Crossref, and Scopus. From the results of the data screening, 6 articles were found that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The conclusion obtained from this systematic search is that the Synchronous Model is the most widely used model in the process of learning English specifically. Second, the Synchronous Model and language are more widely used in ESP learning for public health. Third, the Synchronous Model in ESP dominates the learning process after the Covid-19 pandemic. These three findings imply that there are still gaps in the Synchronous Model and ESP research. In general, this review is very valuable for practitioners to find out which Synchronous Model is ready to be used and developed and can identify gaps for research in Public Health (ESP) English language learning, this SLR is very closely integrated into technology-based learning with English language education in public health at the college and university level.

Abstract

This research and development (R&D) activity aims to develop a reliable, practical, and effective inquiry learning model that includes preliminary research, product design and development, and assessment. In this development process, the stages outlined by Plomp and Nieveen are adopted. Forty pharmacy students from the pharmacy study program of a state university in Malang, East Java, took part in learning during the 2021-2022 academic year. A questionnaire with Likert Scale 4 categories is a research tool. The expert validation test revealed that "Eligible" is the average result of the validator's assessment criteria. It is possible to immediately implement product results that reach 90.25% on developed media and 89.60% for digital teaching materials with interactive digital flip-book concepts. In terms of the practicality of the products developed, the average V values achieved were 0.86, 0.92, and 0.85, respectively. The results of hypothesis testing in the implementation show that Sig. value (Sig. (2-tailed)) was 0.002, which is smaller than the 0.05 significance level. Accordingly, the research findings confirm a notable improvement in students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills through the implementation of the inquiry learning model through multimedia.

Abstract

ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS Indigenous communities read animal signs as early warnings for nature events Shared experiences shape how different animal behaviours gain meaning Local wisdom shows animals as sensitive partners in human survival   ABSTRACTObserving animal behavior and daily activities can help humans gain knowledge and derive practical benefits. A mixed-method approach, combining desk-based study and telephone interviews, was employed to collect data from seven major Papuan tribal groups. The desk study involved the collection of approximately 2,000 references published between 1980 and 2020 using keyword-based searches conducted with specialized software. Data were also provided by leaders from the seven major communities. The collected data were analyzed using Rayyan, VoS Viewer, Crammer’s Phi, and Microsoft Excel. The principal findings indicate that 14 publications addressed topics related to animal signaling and community beliefs. The animals recognized by the seven major tribal group as exhibiting signals included mammals (52%), fish (8%), reptiles (12%), amphibians (8%), birds (4%), and insects (16%). Animals were reported to convey signals through vocalizations (sounds), appearance, body parts, wastes, tracks, constructed objects, and odors. The result of Crammer’s Phi analysis showed (168) = 219.48, P = 0.0046, df = 168,  = 0.05 and 0.01, and φc = 0.0105 (1%). This results indicate a significant association between perceived values in interpreting animal signals and tribal community groups in West Papua. A Cartesian graph demonstrated low-to-high levels of both animal signaling and beliefs. Beliefs and practices related to animal sensitivity and communication vary across cultures and communities worldwide. Many indigenous communities maintain a deep spiritual connection with nature and animals, viewing them as sentient beings with their own forms of communication and sensitivity.

Abstract

Phenotypic evaluation of contest cattle provides useful information for understanding body conformation and physical condition under field conditions, yet objective studies on contest-based cattle populations remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate morphometric traits and body condition score (BCS) of contest cattle from Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua, and to assess their variation according to district and sex, as well as the relationships among measured traits. Data were collected from 31 contest cattle originating from seven districts, consisting of 8 males and 23 females. The evaluated variables included chest girth (CG), body length (BL), withers height (WH), and BCS. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data, while sex and district effects were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and Kruskal–Wallis test, respectively. Relationships among variables were examined using Spearman’s rank correlation, and principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to describe the multivariate structure of morphometric variation. The overall mean values were 152.60 ± 25.99 cm for CG, 108.26 ± 10.83 cm for BL, 116.58 ± 12.66 cm for WH, and 3.19 ± 0.54 for BCS. No significant differences were found between males and females for any variable. In contrast, district had a significant effect on WH and BCS, with the main difference occurring between Aimas and Mariat. Chest girth was positively correlated with BL (rho = 0.66, p < 0.001) and BCS (rho = 0.54, p < 0.01), indicating that this trait was the most informative single morphometric variable in the dataset. PCA showed that the first two principal components explained 87.55% of the total variation, representing general body size and vertical body structure. In conclusion, contest cattle in Sorong Regency exhibited greater phenotypic variation across districts than between sexes, and chest girth may serve as a practical indicator for field-based phenotypic evaluation of contest cattle.
