Abstract

Self-medication is the use of simple medications by individuals to overcome health problems without first consulting a doctor or health professional. Diarrhea is an abnormal condition characterized by an increase in the volume and frequency of bowel movements, which is three or more times a day. This study aims to find out an overview of the level of public knowledge about diarrhea self-medication in Kranon Hamlet, Blimbing Village, Gatak District, Sukoharjo Regency. The research method used is descriptive, non-experimental by conducting a survey using a questionnaire. The population used is 181 people. The number of samples was obtained from the calculation using the Slovin formula. The respondents studied were 125 respondents who included inclusion and exclusion criteria using the purposive sampling method. The results of the study showed that the percentage of knowledge of diarrhea self-medication with good criteria was 110 respondents (88%), while the sufficient criteria were 13 respondents (10%), and the respondents with less criteria were 2 respondents (2%). So the results of the research on the level of public knowledge about diarrhea self-medication in Kranon Hamlet, Blimbing Village, Gatak District, Sukoharjo Regency have an average level of good knowledge, which is 88%. Keywords: diarrhea, overview of knowledge, self-medication

Abstract

Used cooking oil, which is leftover cooking oil, can be reprocessed into goods or preparations that have added value, one of which is by processing it into solid soap. In soap preparations, additional ingredients are often added, such as aloe vera, because of its antibacterial activity and its properties that can moisturize and soften the skin. The purpose of this study was to determine the formula and physical properties of transparent solid soap, a combination of used cooking oil and coconut oil, with the addition of aloe vera. The study used an experimental method. The soap was made in 6 formulas with variations in used cooking oil: coconut oil (gram) F1 = 0:29; F2 = 29:0; F3 = 6:23; F4 = 12:17; F5 = 17:12; F6 = 23:6. The soap was tested for organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, water content, foam height, free alkali, and unsaponifiable fat. A homogeneous soap preparation was obtained, F1 is yellow, F3, F4, and F5 are orange, and F2 is brownish orange in color, lavender-smelling, and solid in form. pH is following the range of SNI 3532:2016, which is 9 - 11, except for formulas 2 and 4. The height of the foam after being shaken is in the range of 5.2 ± 0.83 - 7.2 ± 0.29, and after being left for 5 minutes, there is a decrease. All formulas meet the requirements for good water content for solid soap preparations, which is less than 15%. The results of the free alkali and free unsaponifiable fat tests show that all formulas have not met the required parameters.

Abstract

The Dlingo plant (Acorus calamus L.) is a medicinal plant that has long been used in traditional medicine and is known to have various biological activities, including as an antimicrobial. This review article aims to examine the phytochemical content and antimicrobial activity of Acorus calamus  L. based on research results published in the period 2021–2026. The article search method was carried out using relevant keywords from the following databases: Google Scholar, ScienDirect, and NCBI. The study was conducted through a literature analysis of various studies evaluating the content of secondary metabolites in leaves, herbs, and rhizomes and their activities against pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The review results show that Acorus calamus L. contains various bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, saponins, steroids, glycosides, triterpenoids, phenolics, phytosterols, and essential oils dominated by asarone. The rhizome is the part of the plant with the highest diversity of secondary metabolites. Various extracts of Acorus calamus L. exhibit antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as antifungal activity against Sclerotium rolfsii. These activities are thought to be related to the synergism of secondary metabolites that can disrupt cell membrane integrity and microbial metabolism. Based on the review results, Acorus calamus L. has the potential to be developed as a source of phytopharmaceutical raw materials and natural antimicrobial agents.
