Abstract

Depression is a common mental disorder in the elderly, associated with emotional distress, increased health care costs, the risk of suicide, and death from other causes. Depression in the elderly is characterised by persistent sadness, helplessness, anhedonia, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, psychomotor retardation or agitation, fatigue, impaired concentration, and suicidal ideation. Prevalence varies between 7 and 30%, higher in women. Risk factors include bereavement, social isolation, and somatic diseases, which are more common in old age. Depression increases the risk of dementia, morbidity, and mortality, emphasising the need for early screening. This activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) method to screen for depression in 61 elderly participants at the Hana Nursing Home using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) questionnaire. The examination results revealed mild, moderate, and severe depression in 8 people (13.11%), 4 people (6.56%), and 2 people (3.28%), respectively. Early detection using GDS is essential for timely intervention, including counselling and medical advice, to improve quality of life and reduce depression-related morbidity and mortality in the elderly population.

Abstract

Lung health plays a crucial role in maintaining metabolic functions and individual productivity, particularly during adulthood. Undetected pulmonary dysfunction may significantly reduce work capacity and overall quality of life. This community service initiative aimed to conduct early screening of lung function using spirometry among the adult population at Asisi Church, South Jakarta. The program was implemented through the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, involving health education, spirometry assessment, result evaluation, and the provision of medical follow-up advice. A total of 62 participants took part in the activity. The spirometric examination revealed average values of vital capacity (VC) at 69.53%, FVC at 61.58%, FEV1 at 68.69%, and FEV1% at 114.13%. All participants were classified as “normal/at risk,” indicating a need for continued monitoring despite the absence of clinical symptoms. This program highlights the importance of early detection of pulmonary dysfunction and the critical role of health education in preventing chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD. Through collaborative efforts between academic institutions and the local community, this initiative demonstrates the effectiveness of community-based preventive strategies in raising awareness of lung health and encouraging healthy lifestyle practices for sustainable quality of life. Abstract

Vitamin D is a micronutrient required by the body. Vitamin D has various functions, including its potential to prevent depression. There are studies suggesting that people with depression are at risk of vitamin D deficiency. This study discusses the correlation between vitamin D and depression.  This is a cross-sectional study designed to investigate the relationship between vitamin D levels and depression in elderly (≥ 60 years) residing at Bina Bhakti Nursing Home. Participants who meet the criteria underwent measurement of vitamin D levels and assessment for depression using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Spearman correlation is used as the statistical analysis to evaluate the relationship between variables. 93 respondents met the criteria with average age of 74.19 years (61-97 years). 77 respondents were female (82.8%) and 16 respondents (17.2%) were male. The mean vitamin D level was 9.78 ng/ml (1.07-25.6ng/mL) and the mean GDS score was 4.51 (0-15). The results of the analysis showed a significant negative correlation between vitamin D levels and GDS scale (-0.287, p-value=0.005). Low vitamin D levels are associated with increased GDS scores, indicating that it is important for the elderly to fulfill their vitamin D needs as an preventive measure against depression

Abstract

Background: Skin hydration is influenced by both intrinsic and systemic factors, including blood biomarkers and body composition. Physiological conditions such as anemia, dyslipidemia, and hyperuricemia are known to affect skin barrier function; however, their relationship with skin hydration has not been comprehensively studied in healthy adult populations. Objective: To analyze the association between blood parameters (hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose, uric acid, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides) and body composition (visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, skeletal muscle mass) with skin hydration status (water, oil, and moisture levels) in adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 210 adult participants from three educational institutions in Jakarta. Data were collected through fasting venous blood analysis, bioelectrical impedance measurements, and skin analysis. Statistical analysis used Spearman correlation with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: Hemoglobin, triglycerides, and uric acid showed a significant positive correlation with skin hydration (p<0.01), while total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and body composition parameters did not show significant associations. Fasting blood glucose was also not significantly correlated with skin moisture. Conclusion: Certain blood parameters, particularly hemoglobin, triglycerides, and uric acid, play an important role in maintaining skin hydration. These findings highlight the importance of evaluating systemic biomarkers as part of a comprehensive approach in skin care and in preventing dry skin in adult populations.

Abstract

Abstract

Acne vulgaris, commonly known as acne, is a dermatological condition that is common among adolescents, affecting approximately 95% of this population. This multifactorial disease consists of genetic, hormonal, microbial, and environmental factors. The main harmful processes are more sebum production, hyperkeratinization, and colonisation with Propionibacterium acnes, which makes porphyrins that make the skin swell. This activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action) methodology, which involves the facial skin analysis of 170 participants. According to the examination results, the average porphyrin content on the participants' facial skin was 63%. Early detection through comprehensive skin assessment and educational interventions is critical to preventing chronic and recurrent episodes, thereby improving physical and psychological well-being.

Abstract

Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism in the body, generated from the breakdown of purine substances found in certain foods. When uric acid levels in the body exceed normal limits due to excessive production or impaired excretion, uric acid crystals can accumulate in the joints, leading to a condition known as gout. This Community Service initiative aims to enhance understanding among adults regarding the risks of high uric acid levels and preventive efforts through routine screening and health education. The program is structured using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) method to provide comprehensive education on risk factors and prevention, as well as to assess participants' uric acid levels. This initiative emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle and routine examinations as preventive measures, supporting early detection and management of health risks related to uric acid. The continuity of this service activity is expected to improve community quality of life over time.

Abstract

Hypertriglyceridemia is a metabolic condition that often occurs in the elderly and contributes greatly to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, heart attack, and acute pancreatitis. This condition often does not show symptoms in the early stages, so regular triglyceride level checks are an important step for early detection. The Community Service Program (PKM) at Panti Werdha Hana aims to increase awareness of the elderly about the importance of early detection of dyslipidemia through blood triglyceride level screening activities. This activity uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach which includes lipid profile examination and educational counseling on risk factors and prevention of hypertriglyceridemia. Of the 76 elderly participants, it was found that 33 people (43.42%) had high triglyceride levels, while 43 people (56.58%) showed normal levels. These results emphasize the importance of routine checks and education to reduce the risk of cardiometabolic disease and support a healthier and more independent quality of life for the elderly.
