Abstract

Bitter melon plant (Momordica charantia L.) is a potential commercial plant if intensively cultivated in agribusiness, this plant can be very beneficial if it produces high levels of fruit production, it cannot be separated from insect pollination activities. Insects that visit bitter melon plant flowers are actually beneficial and can be harmful. This field practice aims to determine the relationship of visitor insects associated with bitter melon flowers (M. charantia L.), by using the scan sampling method (direct observation) in the field, which counts the number of species and individual insect’s visitors then will be identified in the Plant Pest Entomology Laboratory. Observations were carried out for 5 weeks. Every week took 2 days of observation, and in those 2 days there were observations on the same day and time which was on Tuesday and Thursday at 06:00: 30 - 08:30 AM (morning) and 04:00 - 05:30 PM (afternoon). What was observed s the insects who visited the bitter melon flowers of 6 orders including Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Thysanoptera, Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, and Araneae as well as 8 families and 12 species of the orders. Insect visitors associated with bitter melon flowers have different roles including pollinators, predators, visitors and pests. The behavior also varies, especially in taking nectar or pollen as a source of nutrition. Abstract

Mustard greens are one of the vegetable commodities plants. The part used is the young leaves, which can be processed into traditional medicinal and vegetable ingredients that benefit human health. This research aims to determine the level of shade tolerance on the growth and yield of mustard plants and determine mustard varieties that are tolerant of minimum sunlight conditions. This research was carried out in experimental fields using artificial fields in June – July 2023. This research used a split-plot design with 2 factors. Tafif shade as the main plot consists of no shade 0%, 55%, 70%, and 95%. The sub-plot varieties consist of the Tosakan variety and the Kumala variety. The results of the research indicate that sunlight intensity reduction negatively impacted the growth and yield of mustard plants. However, under 55% shade conditions, there was no significant difference observed in the growth and yield of mustard plants compared to those grown without shade. The Tosakan and Kumala varieties did not show any differences in the growth or yield of mustard plants.

(2024). population and storage pest species from three local markets with various roofs, floors, and ventilations in Sub-district of Alang-Alang Lebar and Sukarame, Palembang South Sumatera. In: Herlinda S et al. (Eds.), Prosiding Seminar Nasional Lahan Suboptimal ke-12 Tahun 2024, Palembang 21 Oktober 2024. (pp. 679–689). Palembang: Penerbit & Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI).Storage insects provide a substantial risk to food spoiling, potentially resulting in a considerable reduction of up to 82.5% in food preservation. Ventilation is essential to avert harm caused by storage insect infestations. This study aimed to identify species and assess the population of storage pest insects in relation to the kind of ventilation in the Alang-Alang Lebar and Sukarame market's storage facilities. This study employed a direct collecting strategy for insects spotted on each food product commodity through handpicking, followed by the identification of each obtained sample. The identified bug species vary due to the diversity of dietary products. Species such Sitophilus oryzae and Tribolium castenum were predominant, alongside several others such as Cryptolestes ferrugineus, Carpophilus dimidiatus, Callosobruchus chinensis, Rhyzopertha dominica, and Oryzaephilus surinamensis. In the rice commodities market in Alang Alang Lebar District, the storage pest species S. oryzae was identified. S. oryzae is an insect pest that inflicts damage on stored rice. Sitophilus oryzae was found as the insect pest responsible for the majority of damage to stored rice. The peanut commodities in the Kebun Bunga Market and KM 5 Market comprised the species C. dimidiatus. C. dimidiatus was a significant pest that infests dry grains and fruits after harvest. The yield loss resulting from the assault of C. dimidiatus was quite substantial. Fermented peanut products were found as the primary target of C. dimidiatus. Seven species were identified in the storage with filtered ventilation. The pest insects infestation was deemed low due to the relatively small population, indicating the efficacy of both natural and filtered ventilation systems.

Abstract

The utilization of cigarette butts and Moringa leaves as biopesticides is an environmentally friendly innovation to reduce the negative impact of chemical pesticides. Cigarette butts containing compounds such as nicotine and alkaloids have potential as natural pest control. Moringa leaves, which are rich in alkaloids and polyphenols, also increase the effectiveness of biopesticides in inhibiting pests and increasing plant growth. This community service activity was carried out in Desa Pulau Semambu, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra with field study methods, community training, making, and direct application of biopesticides on plants affected by pests. Tests showed that biopesticides from cigarette butt waste and moringa leaves were able to eradicate up to 100% of the cricket’s pest population within 10 minutes, without causing damage to ornamental plants. The socialization and training involved ± 30 residents, where 100% of respondents expressed interest in trying to make their own biopesticides at home. Therefore, this program is planned to be further developed through regular mentoring and provision of practical guidelines in collaboration with the Karang Taruna of Desa Pulau Semambu so that the community can make biopesticides independently. This is in accordance with 97% of the community expressing openness to further similar community service activities.
