Artificial intelligence allows a person to converse with machines, computers or robots. Chatbots are an application that you can talk to like you would talk to a human. Chatbots can be a tool to practice the language learned anywhere and anytime. In order to improve students' communication skills in English, researchers conducted research on the use of artificial intelligence Chatbots applications in learning English courses in the PKh Department for the 2020/2021 academic year. This study uses a descriptive method to describe the process of learning English with chatbots and to determine student perceptions of the use of these chatbots in improving their communication skills in English. After having conversations with chatbots: ELIZA, ALICE, MITSUKU/KUKI, and ANDY with conversation topics: introductions, feelings/confessions, daily activities, hobbies, lectures, COVID-19 pandemic, etc. The results obtained are the most preferred Chatbots: ANDY, there are POSITIVE meaningful expressions (86%) and no NEGATIVE meanings towards ANDY chatbot. Least favorite chatbots: ELIZA, there are a lot of NEGATIVE (43%) meaningful expressions towards ELIZA chatbot which are bigger than POSITIVE expressions (39%).

Abstract

This study aims at developing a digital library that makes it easier for students majoring in English Education to access learning resources. This study adapts 7 of the 10 steps of the Research and Development (R&D) design by Borg and Gall (1983). The steps involve research and information gathering, planning, developing the initial product, preliminary field testing, major product revisions, main field testing and revision of operational products. Data are collected using questionnaires, observation and expert validation. The study shows (1 )the feasibility of digital library products as validated by the experts is in the average score of 3.54 criteria which indicates very good; (2) the registration, cataloguing, charging and discharging tasks are achieved within average time spent 207 seconds, 192 second and 34 seconds signifying the simplicity and efficiency of the template. (3) the users’ response on the attractiveness and convenience use of digital libraries shows that 85.39% respondents state that the product is very interesting and easy for use. Conclusions from the results of validation, trials and responses prove that the Librarika-Based digital library is feasible to use and can assist students in supporting lectures, ease the access to catalogues of library collections available at the English Department library and for sure avoid direct physical contact between members and librarian during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the effect of using chain game toward students’ speaking skill. The quasi-experimental with nonequivalent control group design was applied in this study. The seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 17 Kota Serang as the population. The samples were 30 students of VII C as the experimental class which is treated by using chain game and 30 students of VII A as the control class which is treated without using chain game. The data came from an oral test that was divided into two parts: pre-test and post-test. After collecting the data, the researchers used statistical computation to analyze the data. The result showed that there was significant effect of using chain game towards students’ speaking skill. It can also be seen from the calculation using an independent sample t test. The t test value was 3.966 and the significance value was 5% of t table df = 56, which was 1.673. So, t observed was higher than t table (3.966 > 1.673). Hence, this research could be used as a reference for teaching speaking with chain game since the use of chain game was effective for teaching speaking to the seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 17 Kota Serang. Keywords: chain game; students’ speaking skill; teaching speaking

Abstract

This paper discusses mainly the development of the language phonological acquisition of a two-year-old child during the linguistic period, especially on vowels and the factors that influence phonology acquisition. This study looks at the following questions: 1) How does a two-year-old acquire vowels? 2) What factors influence a child's phonological acquisition? First language acquisition (FLA) is the process of mastering a first language by children. In the early stages of development, humans begin to acquire their mother tongue or first language, which usually occurs between mother and child, other family members can follow, and it is done orally in the family environment informally. This study employs a case study approach to qualitative research because it displays the research findings based on facts found in the speakers' everyday lives and the process of language acquisition in the phonological features of the subject. This was gained through observation and diary notes. According to the findings of this examination, the subject has learned the vowels [a], [u], [e], [I], and [o]. Child’s phonological components of language acquisition are impacted by environmental variables, shown by the amount of vocabulary he obtains from family members, caretakers and surroundings.

Abstract

This research has its goals to find out what students have experienced in remote learning and additionally to find out what most of the students applied in their learning style in 8th-semesters of the English department at the University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. The researcher used qualitative research with thematic analysis as the data analysis technique. Open questionnaires and interviews as the instrument to gather the needed data. The subject in this research is the 8th-semester student of the University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, 40 student report has been recorded. Based on the report the researcher discovered that most students experience more unsatisfied than satisfied with remote learning. Even with unsatisfied experience mostly reported, the student still gained a satisfactory experience with remote learning. Based on the data student mostly applied a “visual” learning style in their learning, students are able to gain better perception in learning by seeing a video that has a use to give a better understanding in an enjoyable way. In light the finding, the researcher suggest to use the findings as references material for improving a remote learning system.
