Abstract

This study aimed to examine the influence of Wordwall, a gamified digital learning media, on the grammar mastery of eighth-grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri (MTsN) 1 Kota Serang, focusing on comparative adjectives. A quasi-experimental design was employed with two groups: an experimental group (VIII H) that received instruction using Wordwall-based activities and a control group (VIII I) taught via conventional methods. Both groups underwent pre-test and post-test assessments to measure changes in grammar proficiency. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, independent samples t-test, and effect size calculation through SPSS version 27. The results indicated an increase in both groups' scores after treatment; however, the independent t-test revealed no statistically significant difference (p = 0.073 > 0.05). Despite this, the effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.48) suggested a moderate practical impact. Qualitative observations noted higher student engagement and motivation in the experimental group, indicating that while Wordwall may not significantly enhance grammar mastery within a short intervention period, it offers potential benefits when integrated thoughtfully into language instruction. This study contributes to understanding gamified digital tools in EFL classrooms and provides implications for educators seeking innovative teaching strategies.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and validate an SRL questionnaire for undergraduate EFL students using Research and Development (R&D) approach with a simplified 3D model (define, design, and develop). The instrument assesses three key dimensions of SRL based on Zimmerman's theoretical framework: cognitive, motivational, and behavioral. Content validity was established through expert review, followed by a pilot study with 30 students. Pearson product-moment correlation confirmed item validity, all items exceeded r= 0.361 (p<0.05). Furthermore, the reliability analysis, using Cronbach's alpha, yielded a coefficient of 0.964, surpassing the acceptable threshold of 0.700. These findings collectively indicate that the developed SRL questionnaire possesses strong psychometric properties, making it valid and reliable instrument for measuring self-regulated learning among EFL students. This instrument enables educators to identify student strengths and weaknesses, informing targeted interventions and promoting autonomous learning practices among EFL students.

Abstract

The disposition of students to engage in critical thinking is an essential requirement for developing critical thinking skills and significantly impacts their competency in critical thinking. However, the practice of critical thinking is hardly included into educational institutions. Consequently, this study is conducted to determine the portrait of critical thinking disposition among English education freshmen at a state university in Banten, Indonesia. The findings of this study will serve as the foundation for developing teaching syllabus in all subjects in English department. This study utilized descriptive qualitative method to analyze the characteristics of critical thinking disposition among first-year English education students. The study sample comprised of first-semester students who were currently enrolled in the English Education Department comprising 110 first-year students. The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) assessment, developed by Facione in 2011, was employed to gather data regarding students’ disposition towards critical thinking. The research findings indicate that, on the whole, English education freshmen possess a favorable disposition towards critical thinking, as 48.18% of the students fall into the positive category of essential thinking ability, followed by 44.52% exhibiting a strong CTD. Meanwhile, 7.3% of the student respondents show an ambivalent CTD. Further, while the top three CTD indicators among the freshmen are truth-seeking, open-mindedness, and analyticity, the bottom three indicators of their critical thinking disposition comprise inquisitiveness, maturity of judgement, and self-confidence. The results suggest that the students are familiar enough in solving problems or seeking truth from diverse points of views, but lack of desire and bravery for learning to process own reasoning and making decisions. Integrating the latest findings into the structure and implementation of the English education syllabus has the potential to enhance students' disposition towards critical thinking, thereby impacting their long-term ability to think critically.

Abstract

In recent years, the integration of children with autism into regular classrooms has garnered considerable attention, highlighting the need for effective educational practices tailored to their specific needs. This research aims to enhance English listening abilities in autistic children using the Total Physical Response (TPR) technique in the SMP-C grade at SKH Negeri 01 Cilegon. This research used a qualitative descriptive technique, utilizing observational and participant data to examine the implementation, advantages, and efficacy of Total Physical Response (TPR) in an inclusive classroom environment. The results indicate that Total Physical Response (TPR), which integrates physical activity with verbal guidance, significantly improves students' listening comprehension and memory. This approach is particularly beneficial for autistic learners who react well to tactile and visual stimuli. TPR activities, including gestures, visual aids, practical tasks, and objects, enhance classroom engagement and accommodate varied learning requirements. Students demonstrated enhanced knowledge, increased engagement, and elevated self-confidence, especially among those exhibiting greater collaboration. For students who exhibited reluctance or minimal responsiveness, supporting techniques such as repetition, explicit instructions, and positive reinforcement were crucial in enhancing their involvement. The study emphasizes the difficulties in accommodating diverse student reactions, highlighting the necessity for instructor adaptability, ingenuity, and perseverance. Notwithstanding these limitations, TPR has shown efficacy in enhancing listening abilities and fostering the physical, social, and emotional development of autistic adolescents. In conclusion, TPR provides a comprehensive, learner-centric methodology that enhances the accessibility, engagement, and significance of English language acquisition for children with autism.

Abstract

Pre-service English teachers (PSETs) often encounter challenges translating theoretical knowledge of Foreign Language Acquisition (FLA) principles into practical classroom applications, impacting their confidence and readiness for teaching. To address this issue, this study examines creating and assessing a digital flipbook developed as a targeted learning resource to enhance PSETs' ability to connect theoretical knowledge with practical teaching applications. The flipbook was designed to incorporate multimedia features, interactive activities, and learner-centered principles, providing PSETs with an engaging and practical learning resource. The study utilized the 4D model to guide the design and development process, involving 30 third-year PSETs at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. Expert validation of the flipbook's design, content, and language yielded a score of 4.75, categorized as "very valid." Practicality testing from students' perceptions resulted in an average score of 4.66, categorized as "very good." The assessment test, measuring comprehension and critical thinking skills, indicated a medium N-gain score of 0.32, reflecting moderate improvement in learning outcomes. The findings suggest that the digital flipbook effectively supports PSETs in understanding and applying FLA concepts, though the moderate improvement highlights areas for further refinement. This case study underscores the potential of digital flipbooks as tools for bridging the gap between theory and practice in teacher education.
