Abstract

This study is grounded in the profound need to comprehend the role of Mohammed Arkoun, a postmodern/contemporary scholar, in revitalizing the potential of Islamic thought in the 21st century. The article underscores Arkoun's significance as an Islamic philosopher who successfully integrates the "authenticity of Islam" with a broad understanding of contemporary social sciences, giving rise to the concept of Applied Islamology. With a life background immersed in two traditions, Islam (Algeria) and France (the West), Arkoun endeavors to reconcile various aspects of life from both civilizations. The research methodology employs descriptive, historical, comparative, and synthetic analysis approaches. Data collection involves extensive literature research on Arkoun's works, both his writings and relevant contributions from other authors. Based on a philosophical-critical examination of the data, it is concluded that Arkoun plays a significant role in shaping an inclusive study of Islam for the future. The findings offer profound insights into Arkoun's contribution to connecting and harmonizing Islamic thought with contemporary social sciences.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of political literacy and the views of Generation Z in Medan City on the issues of identity politics and radicalism. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of the study show that the majority of Generation Z has limited political understanding and tends to follow the flow of public opinion, especially through social media. Although they generally reject the practice of identity politics and radicalism, this rejection is more emotional than based on deep conceptual understanding. The low level of political literacy and critical awareness is a challenge in forming a participatory and democratically resilient young generation. Therefore, increasing political literacy, anti-radicalism education, and understanding of diversity need to be instilled through formal education, digital literacy campaigns, and strengthening national values. This study recommends multi-sector collaboration to build a Generation Z that is politically aware, inclusive, and resilient to extreme ideologies

Abstract

The limited involvement of local party members in political decision-making processes reflects the persistent weakness of internal democratic practices within political parties. This issue is crucial to examine as it contradicts the values of deliberation (musyawarah) upheld in Indonesia's political system and in Islamic teachings. This study focuses on the implementation of musyawarah in political decision-making within the Branch Leadership Council (DPC) of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) in Deli Serdang Regency. It explores its relevance to the Islamic concept of shura. Employing a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, data were collected through in-depth interviews and direct observations of the party’s decision-making processes. The findings indicate that while musyawarah is formally practiced, it does not fully reflect the principles of shura, which emphasize equality, justice, and active participation of all members. This study offers a concrete contribution by proposing a model of political decision-making grounded in Islamic shura values to strengthen substantive democracy at the local level.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of Islamic organizations in voter mobilization in the 2024 Election in Medan City. Using a case study approach with data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and documentation, this study found that Islamic organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) play a strategic role in shaping political awareness and voter preferences. This role is carried out through religious forums and the use of social media, but it is colored by ambiguity between the neutral position of the organization and the practical political affiliation of its cadres. The results show that religion-based voter mobilization can increase political participation, but also harbor the potential for polarization and religious instrumentality. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the capacity of Islamic organizations as agents of political education that uphold the values of moderation and inclusivity in democracy.

Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzes the formation of political preferences among Muslim women in North Sumatra during the 2024 General Election, focusing on the dynamic intersection of religion, culture, and social networks. Drawing on data from 152 respondents collected through online surveys and in-depth interviews, the study finds that culture, particularly through family norms, domestic responsibilities, and spousal influence, emerges as the most dominant factor (93.4%) in shaping electoral decisions. Religion (77.6%) functions as a source of moral legitimation but is often actualized within cultural contexts and channeled through social networks. Social networks (42.1%) act as conduits for political narratives, primarily via social media and religious figures. This research challenges the simple dichotomy between agency and structure, demonstrating that women’s political autonomy does not always equate to individual independence but often manifests as a form of reflective obedience—wherein choices are forged through a negotiation between religious values, familial demands, and personal aspirations. These findings indicate that women are not merely passive recipients of influence but actively interpret and assign meaning to their political choices. To enhance women’s substantive participation, empowerment strategies must be holistic, addressing the transformation of family norms, the reinforcement of an inclusive religious identity, and the strengthening of social capacity. Consequently, the domestic sphere can be transformed from a restrictive space into a political power base for Muslim women.

Abstract

Qur’an Surah Ar-Rahman verse 37 is one of the kauniyah (cosmic) verses that describes a cosmic phenomenon in which the sky is split apart and undergoes a change in color, expressed through the phrase Wardatan Kādihan. This verse has given rise to diverse interpretations, particularly between classical exegesis and contemporary scientific (tafsir ‘ilmi) interpretations. This article aims to analyze and compare the interpretation of Surah Ar-Rahman verse 37 in classical exegesis and contemporary scientific exegesis, while examining its relevance to the phenomenon of nebulae from the perspective of modern astronomy. This study employs a qualitative library research method using descriptive and comparative approaches. Primary data were obtained from classical Qur’anic commentaries, including Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Tafsir Al-Qurtubi. Contemporary scientific interpretations were drawn from Tafsir Al-Ayat Al-Kauniyyah, the Scientific Tafsir published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, and the works of contemporary Muslim scholars. The findings indicate that classical exegesis interprets Surah Ar-Rahman verse 37 as a description of cosmic events that will occur on the Day of Judgment, emphasizing linguistic analysis and transmitted narrations. In contrast, contemporary scientific exegesis relates the verse to astronomical phenomena, such as nebulae, through an interpretative approach that is indicative rather than definitive. This article concludes that the integration of Qur’anic exegesis and science should be carried out in a methodological and proportionate manner so as not to exceed the epistemological boundaries of Qur’anic interpretation.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of green conservatism in the thought of Roger Vernon Scruton (1944-2020), a prominent conservative philosopher. The research aims to analyze the intellectual stimulus that gave birth to the idea of green conservatism and evaluate its main principles. The results show that Scruton's green conservatism stems from his personal experience and his belief in the importance of environmental preservation through local approaches and respect for tradition. The main stimuli that influenced Scruton's thinking include his complicated relationship with his father, his experiences in Paris during the 1968 student riots, and his decision to leave academia to focus on writing and agriculture. Scruton integrated traditional conservative principles with environmental concerns through the concepts of oikophilia (love of home), subsidiarity, localism, and cultural and historical preservation. With this approach, Scruton challenges the dominant narrative in environmentalism and offers a new perspective that emphasizes the importance of local awareness and personal responsibility in environmental conservation.

Abstract

The rally of around two million Muslims in Jakarta in November 2016 protesting against alleged religious defamation committed  by Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama made the  headlines in  Indonesian mainstream newspapers; Kompas and Republika. However, both newspapers came out with different perspectives in accordance with their ideological background. Therefore, these differences lead to the question of  whether they would trigger a clash of civilization as pointed by S. Huntington stating that the vast post-cold war conflicts would be represented by Western Civilization, China Civilization, and Islam Civilization. This study formulates the problems including: (1) How is the clash of civilization built through the symptoms constructed in Kompas and Republika newspapers? and; (2) How do the intertextual aspects build the clash of civilization semiotically through the texts of the news in Kompas and Republika related to the November 4, 2016 rally? The paradigm used is the critical paradigm with qualitative approach, while the data are analyzed by using Kristeva Semiotic Method. The results of the research include; the mass media has been  a field of  the symbolic war among civilizations, meaning that the clash of civilizations on media is manifested through the symbolic conflict upheaval operated semiotically by Kompas and Republika. The news of November 4, 2016 rally in both newspapers serves as a battlefield of meanings as well as the field of a clash of civilizations.
