Abstract

Over the years, there has been a revolution in political reforms in the Gulf Countries. These reforms involve the promotion of tolerance, increased expression, and the position of women, breaking down traditional Islamic values, and assuming more liberal Western ideologies. The reforms also include the empowerment of women, trimming the powers vested in the religious police, and promoting moderate Islam. This study seeks to elaborate on the responses of the Indonesian government and Muslim figures toward political reforms. This study uses a qualitative method by collecting secondary data from online sources and analyzing the Indonesian government and figures responses to the Gulf countries religious reforms.  The study found an enthusiastic response from the government level to the reforms through regular visits and event collaboration between Indonesia and the Gulf especially with Saudi Arabia.  On the one hand, Muslim figures responded to it not so enthusiastically and only limited comments by several figures from different Islamic groups in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Israeli intervention that occurred in Gaza in 2023 caused a wave of reactions from countries and the global community, showing differences in orientation and approach. Since the war, the global public has shown a strong reaction to Israeli attacks on civilians and has demanded a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons. In contrast, states have been divided into those who joined to condemn Israel and others who supported Israel. This article comparatively analyses the response of the state and the international public to genocide in Gaza from the perspective of nationalism and cosmopolitanism. Nationalism focuses on prioritizing the state interest over others, whereas cosmopolitanism addresses individual rights as the most important thing in global politics. This study uses qualitative methods to interpret the varieties of the states and publics by collecting online documents from websites, journals, and media. This study found that countries tend to act based on national interests, geopolitical considerations, strategic alliances, and domestic stability. Even among Muslim countries and supporters of Palestine, the attitudes shown are often ineffective because they are shackled by domestic political and economic calculations. Instead, the global public displayed strong cosmopolitan solidarity through demonstrations, digital campaigns, and economic boycotts as a form of defence of human rights and universal justice. The tension between a nationalistic approach to the state and a cosmopolitan public response indicates a wide gap between the state and the public stance toward the Gaza genocide.

Abstract

This article presents the results of a community service program in the form of a webinar titled The Indonesian Public's Contribution in Responding to Israel's Colonization of Palestine. The activity aimed to raise public awareness about the reality of Israel's occupation of Palestine and the communication strategies Israel uses to legitimize its actions. It also sought to educate the public on Israel's efforts to engage the Indonesian public through various media and partnerships. This program involved collaboration between lecturers from the International Relations and Communication departments of FPSB UII, who presented materials on topics such as Israel's occupation, Israel's public diplomacy strategies, global Zionist networks, and Zionist approaches through media. The webinar was conducted online over four weeks, with participants from various backgrounds, including students, lecturers, and the general public. The outcomes of this program are expected to contribute to sustaining solidarity with the Palestinian people and support efforts to end Israel's occupation in line with the 1945 Constitution.

Abstract

This article provides a new perspective on responding to the turmoil in Palestine from 1948 to the present. The main argument of this article is that the primary cause of the Palestinian issue is the existence of the Zionist Jewish occupiers in Palestinian land, supported by the United States and its allies. Hence, the solution to this occupation is to liberate Palestine from Zionist occupation. This study uses the concept of jihad in Islam as a framework to explain the steps in liberating Palestine. The method used is qualitative analysis of data collected from various books, journals, and websites. This study finds that, given the current conditions in Palestine, the approach of jihad is the most realistic approach that pro-Palestinian Muslim-majority countries can undertake. However, the implementation process is inaccessible due to several factors, including the political, economic, and military conditions in Muslim countries, as well as the dominant ideologies currently followed and applied by these countries.

Abstract

Islamophobia is still a major problem faced by people in various parts of the world, including in Muslim-majority countries. Muslims themselves have difficulty in dealing with Islamophobia and many do not yet understand coping strategies. To strengthen the ability of the community to promote a positive image of Islam and Muslims and to educate ordinary people about Islam, certain steps need to be taken. This community service aims to provide education on strategies to overcome Islamophobia through effective diplomacy and communication strategies. This service is carried out through online seminars (Webinars) via Zoom Meetings to reach the wider community and can be recorded properly for community reference in the future. The activity which was held for two days in two weeks responded positively by participants who thought that the same agenda needed to be continuously held in the future to educate people on the issue of Islamophobia and how to deal with it.

Abstract

After enjoying free and open political conditions for a long time, Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, a transnational political Islamist movement, had to face the government's coercive response in 2017 when the government decided to disband this movement in consideration of violations of state principles and threatening the Republic of Indonesia. This paper tried to elaborate on the country's stigmatization efforts against HTI to create a negative picture of this group. The concept used is a stigmatization approach in the study of social movements as one of the state's strategies in repressing a movement that is considered threatening. The method used is qualitative, with data taken from books, journals, and online media sources. This article concludes that the Indonesian government has successfully used the stigmatization method to inhibit the influence of HTI in Indonesia. Stigmatization is carried out through various narratives against this movement, especially related to threats to ideology and political traditions in Indonesia.

Abstract

The research analyzes how legal and political factors, as well as personal considerations, influence judges' decisions at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the 2023-2024 South Africa v. Israel case. From a legal realist perspective, this paper analyzes the work of 15 judges of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The study explores the potential impact of national ties, political contexts, and external interest groups on the court's temporary orders. The present study posits that extraneous power relations, interest groups, and interest-based partnerships, alongside political alliances, can influence the judicial system's administration of justice. The article's conclusion posits that, despite the ostensible autonomy of International Court of Justice (ICJ) judges, their jurisprudence in political cases often aligns with the foreign policies of their respective nations. This observation calls into question the prevailing concept of legal fairness within the framework of international law. The findings show that judges vote in line with their states’ geopolitical interests in which political alignments steer judicial reasoning.

Abstract

This study analyzed the public solidarity movement in Indonesia in responding to the Palestinian crisis, especially since Israel’s attack on Gaza in October 2023. Both the Indonesian Government and the public have consistently supported Palestine through various means, including political support and humanitarian assistance. Concerning the public’s role, even though there is an active contribution, these actions are mostly still carried out by Muslim communities only. Apart from that, the actions carried out are still not integrated, resulting in not optimal scale of action and scope. Using a qualitative approach, this study explored the factors influencing the less-than-optimal Indonesian public movement on the Gaza issue by collecting data from various documents and other relevant sources and analyzing them using a political structure theory approach to the study of social movements. This study disclosed that Indonesia has an excellent opportunity to be actively involved in various intensive solidarity actions and to have a global impact in supporting Palestine, given its open political structure, elite support, and the absence of state repression. However, the absence of a solid, cross-organizational national alliance, including Islamic movements that focus more on social and humanitarian issues, exhibits the non-optimal potential for a significant movement from the Indonesian public. This study contributes to enriching discussions about the global solidarity movement for Palestine by drawing on specific theories in social movement studies, particularly in the context of Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country that should play a greater role in advocating for the ongoing Palestinian issue.

Abstract

Israel's aggression against Palestinians, which culminated in Israel's military aggression in Gaza in 2023-2024, has provoked a broad response from the international community, including the emergence of various global solidarity movements such as the BDS movement Indonesia . This study aims to explain the efforts of the Indonesian BDS Movement in conducting non-violent advocacy to respond to the aggression through peaceful protest strategies and boycott campaigns against entities affiliated with Israel. This study uses Jørgen Johansen's theory of non-violence, which divides peaceful action into four main categories: nonviolent protest, non-cooperation, nonviolent intervention, and civil disobedience. This research argues that the strategy of the Indonesian BDS Movement reflects two main forms, namely peaceful protest and refusal to cooperate with those who support Israeli colonialism. The results show that BDS movement Indonesia consistently carries out advocacy through peaceful demonstrations, digital campaigns, online petitions, and collaborations with humanitarian organizations. These findings confirm that the non-violent approach used is effective in strengthening public solidarity, building social awareness of humanitarian issues in Gaza, and demonstrating the role of Indonesian civil society in fighting for justice and human rights for the Palestinian people.
