Abstract

Shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) is an important horticultural commodity that contributes significantly to Indonesia's economy. However, its production declined in 2022–2023 compared to 2021. Fertilization plays a key role in improving soil fertility and supplying nutrients for optimal plant growth. This study aimed to assess the growth and yield response of the Brebes shallot variety to various doses of bokashi fertilizer and to determine the most effective dose. The experiment used a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with one factor: bokashi dosage, consisting of six treatments—B0 (control), B1 (1 kg/m²), B2 (1.5 kg/m²), B3 (2 kg/m²), B4 (2.5 kg/m²), and B5 (3 kg/m²). Each treatment was replicated four times with ten plants per replication, totaling 280 experimental units. The results indicated that bokashi application significantly affected leaf length, leaf diameter, bulb length, bulb diameter, fresh and dry bulb weight, as well as total yield per clump. The highest growth and yield were observed at the 3 kg/m² dosage. Thus, bokashi at 3 kg/m² is considered the most effective dose for improving the growth and productivity of the Brebes shallot variety.

Abstract

One environmentally friendly solution for managing household organic waste is converting it into Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF), which contains essential nutrients for plant growth. LOF not only improves soil fertility but also has the potential to serve as an alternative nutrient source in hydroponic systems, which are increasingly popular in urban agriculture. Since chemical fertilizers such as AB-Mix are relatively expensive, LOF offers a more economical and sustainable option, although its effectiveness and optimal concentration still require further evaluation. The objectives of this study were: (1) to determine the effect of household-waste-based LOF application on the growth of pak choi in a hydroponic system, (2) to determine the optimal concentration of household-waste-based LOF for pak choi growth in a hydroponic system, and (3) to evaluate the effectiveness of household-waste-based LOF as a substitute nutrient solution for pak choi growth in hydroponics. The research was arranged in a completely randomized design with four treatments, namely P0 = 100% AB-Mix (5 ml/L AB-Mix); P1 = 50% AB-Mix + LOF (2.5 ml/L AB-Mix + 5 ml/L LOF); P2 = 25% AB-Mix + LOF (1.25 ml/L AB-Mix + 5 ml/L LOF); and P3 = LOF (5 ml/L LOF). The observed variables included plant height, number of leaves, leaf greenness, fresh shoot weight, and fresh root weight. Based on the 5% Duncan test, the treatments showed significant differences in all observed variables. Treatment P0 produced the best response and was significantly different from the other treatments. Treatment P1 resulted in higher growth than P2 and P3, although statistically it was still significantly different from P0. Nevertheless, P1 demonstrated the ability to substitute AB-Mix nutrients by up to 50%.

Abstract

Sweet corn is a high-value horticultural commodity with steadily increasing market demand. This study aimed to evaluate the production of sweet corn under different plant spacing and bokashi application. The research was conducted at the Horticultural Experimental Garden of Politeknik Negeri Lampung from July to October 2024, using a two-factor Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The first factor was plant spacing, consisting of three levels: 100 cm × 20 cm (JT1), 80 cm × 20 cm (JT2), and 60 cm × 20 cm (JT3). The second factor was bokashi application, also consisting of three levels: no bokashi (B0), 2.5 kg/m² bokashi (B1), and 5.0 kg/m² bokashi (B2). The results indicated that planting distance had a significant effect on all observed parameters. Bokashi application significantly influenced all observed parameters except stem diameter and cob diameter. No significant interaction was observed between planting distance and bokashi application. The 80 cm × 20 cm planting distance produced the highest yield, reaching 14.25 tons/ha. Bokashi application improved plant growth and yield compared to the control. Abstract

Liquid organic fertilizer (POC) from kitchen waste is an environmentally friendly and low-cost nutrient alternative for hydroponic plant cultivation. This study aims to test the effectiveness of kitchen waste POC as a substitute for AB mix nutrient solution in the cultivation of water spinach (Ipomoea reptans Poir.) using the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) hydroponic system. The study was conducted in the greenhouse of Lampung State Polytechnic. The design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments consisted of P0 (AB mix 100%), P1 (POC 100%), P2 (POC 75% + AB mix 25%), P3 (POC 50% + AB mix 50%), and P4 (POC 25% + AB mix 75%). The parameters observed included plant height, number of tillers, root length, plant fresh weight, and plant dry weight. The results showed that the P3 treatment (50% POC + 50% AB mix) produced plant growth and yield equivalent to the 100% AB mix treatment (P0), as indicated by the absence of significant differences between treatments. This finding indicates that the combination of POC and AB mix in equal proportions has the potential to reduce AB mix usage by up to 50% without reducing the productivity of hydroponic water spinach.
