Abstract

The low reading interest among elementary school students has become one of the factors affecting students’ literacy skills. Therefore, innovative learning strategies are needed to create an engaging and motivating learning environment. This study aimed to describe the implementation of a gamification-based literacy innovation program through reading corners in elementary schools and to analyze its impact on students’ reading interest and literacy skills. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects consisted of elementary school students and classroom teachers. The implemented program integrated gamification elements, such as points, levels, and rewards, into reading activities conducted in the classroom reading corner. The findings revealed that the implementation of the gamification-based literacy program was able to increase students’ reading interest, create a more enjoyable learning atmosphere, and encourage students’ active participation in literacy activities. In addition, the program contributed to improving students’ reading comprehension skills and reading habits. Thus, the gamification-based literacy innovation program can serve as an effective alternative learning strategy to enhance the quality of literacy in elementary schools.

Abstract

The low level of literacy culture among elementary school students in Indonesia is a fundamental problem that requires innovative and sustainable educational interventions. This study aims to conduct an in-depth examination of the implementation of the integration of reading corners and creative daily reading journals in strengthening the literacy culture of fifth-grade students at SDN 12 Mataram. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with the research subjects consisting of fifth-grade teachers and students selected through purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted via participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, while data validity was ensured through triangulation of sources and methods. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive analysis technique, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that the integration of these two programs significantly increased students’ reading frequency and independence, strengthened reading comprehension skills through creative reflection in the journals, and fostered the formation of an active reading community within the classroom. It is concluded that the synergy between the reading corner and the creative daily reading journal is capable of building a holistic and sustainable literacy culture. This study recommends that this integration program be widely adopted by elementary schools as an effective and contextual literacy-building strategy.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of picture story media in strengthening reading literacy among elementary school students at SD Aisyiyah 1 Mataram. The study is motivated by the low level of reading interest and limited student participation in classroom learning. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through observation and documentation. The findings indicate that picture story media plays a significant role in fostering students’ engagement, reading interest, collaboration, and self-confidence. Students are more actively involved in reading activities, observing visual elements, participating in discussions, and presenting their ideas. In addition, their ability to comprehend and retell stories improves. The learning environment becomes more dynamic and student-centered. However, several challenges were identified, including limited instructional time, variations in students’ reading abilities, and a lack of confidence among some learners. Overall, picture story media is considered an effective strategy for strengthening reading literacy in elementary education.
