Abstract

The Rural Bank (BPR) plays a crucial role in the Indonesian banking industry, particularly at the regional level, serving as an alternative financ-ing source for the unbankable population. This research aims to analyse the productivity levels of BPRs in East Java using the Malmquist Pro-ductivity Index (MPI) during the period from 2016 to 2022. The study sample comprises 30 BPRs in East Java. The analysis results indicate that the productivity of BPRs in East Java fluc-tuates from year to year. Moreover, during the COVID-19 pandemic, BPR productivity experi-enced a significant decline. The study provides recommendations for BPR management and regulators to pay more attention to BPR pro-ductivity and decision-making foundations.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the efficiency, performance, and scope for enhancement of Rural Banks (BPRs) and Sharia Rural Banks (BPRSs) in Indonesia, particularly in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, in order to support national economic recovery. The research sample consisted of 77 BPRs and 52 BPRSs in Indonesia over the period of 2016-2020. The analytical approach employed was a non-parametric method called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), utilizing secondary data obtained from financial bank statements. The input variables encompassed fixed assets, operational costs, and third-party funds, while the output variables included the amount of financing provided and operating income. The findings of the study reveal a fluctuating trend in the performance of BPRs and BPRSs in Indonesia from year to year. According to the CRS and VRS scores, the efficiency level of BPRs remained stable during the Covid-19 pandemic, whereas BPRSs experienced a decline in efficiency. Consequently, this study concludes that BPRs exhibit superior efficiency compared to BPRSs in Indonesia. Moreover, the analysis of potential improvements indicates that the most significant source of inefficiency lies within the output variables: financing and operating income. Furthermore, benchmarking analysis reveals that the efficiency of both BPRs and BPRSs was higher during the periodof 2016–2019 compared to 2020.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to develop a performance measurement model for Islamic banks using the Maslahah Performa (MaP) approach. The performance measurement model encompasses six MaP maslahah orientations, namely worship, internal processes, talent, learning, customers, and wealth, with each maslahah orientation comprising specific measures, formulas, and targets. The development of performance measures is informed by a comprehensive array of sources, including the Qur'an and Hadith, financial statements, sustainability reports, Islamic bank governance, and regulations established by the OJK and Bank Indonesia. The research design entailed an exploratory study, wherein secondary data was obtained from financial reports, sustainability reports, Islamic bank governance reports, OJK and Bank Indonesia regulations, and other sources. Data samples were obtained from the annual reports of Bank Syariah Indonesia and Bank Muamalat. The selection of these two banks was made with the consideration that they can represent the classification of the Bank Group Based on Tier 1 Capital (KBMI). The findings from the data analysis were then used to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the application of maqashid sharia in measuring the performance of Islamic banks. The implications of this study for Islamic banking practitioners are that the application of the MaP model can help make more maqashid sharia-based decisions, ensuring a balance between profitability and social sustainability. Moreover, the findings of this study can serve as a foundation for regulators to formulate policies and regulations that more effectively support the integration of maqashid sharia principles in the performance assessment of Islamic banks.

Abstract

IntroductionAlthough global food production has tripled, sustainable agriculture remains threatened by climate change, land degradation, and financial gaps, especially in smallholder communities. This study introduces the Integrated Waqf Environment Model (IWEM) as a waqf-based funding mechanism to support sustainable agriculture. Additionally, sentiment analysis using VADER Python is employed to assess public perceptions of sustainable agriculture.ObjectivesThis research aims to measure public sentiment regarding sustainable agriculture on the Twitter social media platform. Additionally, the study proposes the Integrated Waqf Environment Model (IWEM) for sustainable agriculture funding as a response to the challenges faced in the agricultural sector.MethodThe research methodology involves the extraction and classification of tweet data using the Python library called VADER (Valence Aware Dictionary and Sentiment Reasoner). The study utilizes tweet data posted within the last year. The research findings indicate fluctuations and a decrease in the number of tweets discussing sustainable agriculture. The location with the highest tweet activity related to sustainable agriculture is Brussels, Belgium, with 642 tweets during the observation period.ResultsWord cloud analysis on keywords reveals that, in positive sentiment, terms like "food security" and "climate change" dominate the visualization. On the other hand, in negative sentiment, words like "farmer" and "private farmland" appear more frequently. Overall, the majority of tweets express a positive attitude toward sustainable agriculture, with 68.5% positive sentiment. Approximately 22.3% of tweets indicate neutral sentiment, without a strong positive or negative tendency. Only 9.1% of tweets contain negative sentiment, suggesting that a small portion expresses less supportive views of sustainable agriculture.ImplicationsThe research provides insights into public sentiment on sustainable agriculture and proposes IWEM as a sustainable financing solution. IWEM can bridge financial gaps, enhance technological adoption, and support policy development for sustainable agriculture. This model aligns with the SDGs, ensuring long-term agricultural resilience and environmental conservation.Originality/NoveltyThis study uniquely integrates Islamic social finance with Smart Agriculture 5.0 through IWEM. It also employs sentiment analysis to understand public perceptions, offering data-driven insights for policymakers. The research contributes a novel waqf-based framework that can be scaled for sustainable agricultural development.

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of corporate profitability, corporate leverage, firm size, firm age, and the use of Computer-Assisted Audit Tools (CAATs) on audit delay. The study highlights the importance of auditors’ digital readiness in managing corporate operational complexity. The applied method is a panel data regression analysis using Eviews 13 software. The sample consisted of 20 companies audited by KAP BAMS from 2020 to 2022. The results show that all independent variables have a significant effect on audit delay. However, on a partial basis, profitability, leverage, and CAATs variables do not show significant impact. In contrast, firm size and firm age have been found to significantly influence audit delay. A notable insight emerges as CAATs, expected to expedite the audit process are instead positively associated with longer delays. This underscores the gap between technology adoption and auditor competence in practice. This study contributes to the literature by emphasizing that audit technology is only effective when supported by user readiness and adequate digital infrastructure. The implications of these findings suggest that companies and auditors should pay particular attention to firm size, firm age, and the utilization of CAATs to minimize audit delays.

Abstract

IntroductionCash waqf is getting popular due to its potential contribution to support socio-economic initiatives as well as its flexibility for donors to participate. Despite this, criticisms surrounding cash waqf are also increasing as the sector continues to expand, which might adversely affect sentiment among future donors. ObjectivesThis study aims to analyze sentiments and perceptions towards cash waqf and subsequently identify specific factors affecting public perceptions toward cash waqf. MethodA total of 242 Scopus-indexed scholarly publications related to cash waqf (1979–2025) were analyzed using the sentiment analysis model: the lexicon-based tool SentiStrength. Sentiment distribution, consistency, and model performance were compared to provide a comprehensive interpretation. ResultsThe findings indicate that neutral sentiment is the highest, with a percentage of 46%, followed by positive sentiment at 34% and negative sentiment at 20%. The positive sentiments include the permissibility of cash waqf from the Islamic perspective by Imam Zufar, the potential of cash waqf to enhance the productivity of immovable waqf assets, an innovative instrument for socio-economic development, the significant role of cash waqf in economic development, and the flexible use of cash waqf to support business ecosystems in diverse sectors. On the other hand, several negative sentiments towards cash waqf cover debates about the impermanence of money as an object of waqf, suboptimal performance of trustees (nazir), relatively low societal awareness and literacy, a mismatch between its potential and the realization, the utilization of cash waqf mostly for religious and social activities (not in productive sectors that may generate income), lack of standardized reporting for cash waqf management, and lack of transparency in reporting to the public.ImplicationsThe findings urge policymakers to tackle the negative sentiments by improving governance, enhancing public awareness, strengthening institutional management of cash waqf, and addressing transparency issues. By addressing these issues, growth of the waqf sector can be further enhanced and accelerated due to increased public trust and participation in cash waqf. Originality/NoveltyThis study offers a novel contribution to Islamic social finance research by applying sentiment analysis to a corpus of 242 Scopus-indexed academic articles focused on cash waqf. While previous studies have extensively explored the legal, operational, and financial dimensions of cash waqf, limited attention has been given to how this topic is framed and evaluated in scholarly discourse. By employing SentiStrength, a lexicon-based sentiment classification tool, this research identifies underlying positive and negative sentiment patterns within academic narratives, thereby uncovering dominant perceptions and concerns around cash waqf implementation.

Abstract

Purpose – This study investigated the factors influencing Muslims’ intention to participate in green waqf in Indonesia. Specifically, it examines the role of knowledge within the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework to understand how knowledge, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control shape the intention to become a waqif (a person who endows waqf).Methodology – This study employed a quantitative design using survey data collected from 100 Muslim respondents in Indonesia. Data were analyzed with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using SmartPLS 3 to test the relationships between knowledge, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intention. Findings – The findings reveal that Knowledge positively influences attitude, and both attitude and perceived behavioral control significantly impact intention to become a waqif. However, subjective norms did not significantly affect intention. Implications – This study contributes to the existing literature by extending TPB in the context of green waqf and offers insights into the role of knowledge in shaping attitudes toward green waqf. Practically, this study highlights the need for increased awareness and structured initiatives to enhance participation in green waqf, particularly through education and government-driven campaigns. Originality – This research adds to the growing literature on green waqf by applying and extending TPB with knowledge, offering fresh insights into the behavioral determinants of waqf participation, and highlighting the link between Islamic philanthropy and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

This study aims to measure the performance of Sharia Rural Banks in West Java using the maqashid sharia approach by Abdul Majid Najjar. The sample used in this study consists of 9 rural banks spread across West Java. The research data employed are secondary data in the form of financial reports for the year 2023 sourced from the Indonesia Financial Services Authority (OJK) website and governance reports for the year 2023 sourced from the official websites of each Sharia Rural Banks. The results of the study indicate that BPRS Al Salaam Amal Salman achieved the highest maqashid sharia score, followed by BPRS PNM Mentari and BPRS Almadinah Tasikmalaya Perseroda as the top three Sharia Rural Banks in West Java with the highest maqashid sharia index scores. Further analysis at the consequence level reveals that "Self" is the consequence with the highest average score compared to other consequences. Meanwhile, the consequence "Intellect" shows the lowest maqashid performance score. This study is expected to serve as a foundation for sharia banks to enhance the implementation of sharia values in their operational practices. Additionally, this study can contribute to a deeper understanding of the compliance of sharia financial institutions with the principles of maqashid sharia at the regional level.
