Abstract

AUV is an unmanned submersible platform to accomplish a mission. Side-scan sonar, Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD), and underwater video camera are usually attached on AUV. These sensors were used for identifying seawater and seabed condition. Data acquired from a survey with an AUV in Kepulauan Riau processed by Neptus software. Side-scan sonar (SSS) visualization is compared to the video image. SSS signal visualization has a unique pattern that can be identified within the video image. Different substrate structure caused different signal visualization.  The relation between the video image and SSS visualization can be used for identifying habitat benthic profile.

Abstract

Several marine research have attempted to design a data observation system using Internet of Things (IoT). In the future, this system is predicted to become a necessity for marine researchers as a strategic technology to continuously access data. Therefore, this study provides information on the development and application of observation and data collection systems using IoT. The coastal weather and tidal data were obtained via the automatic coastal weather station and acoustic gauge respectively. Meanwhile, the various research activities commenced in July, 2018. In the first year, an operational observation system was developed, while comprehensive baseline data such as air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and sea surface level were also collected. This collection system is reliable, provides real-time data, and easily accessible with internet connection. Furthermore, the Bintan Marine Observation System (The Bintan MOS) is also suitable for other uses such as; monitoring water quality and marine mammals, as well as disaster mitigation. The adoption of this system by other sectors potentially conditions marine researchers for data exchange, to fully understand the fluctuations in coastal weather of Western and Eastern Indonesia as well as the tropical and sub-tropical marine weather. This study successfully developed the Bintan MOS, capable of providing reliable information both off-line and real-time.Keywords:Marine observation systemCoastal weatherTidalBintan

Abstract

The Teluk Bakau waters is known for its marine tourism and is often used as a traditional fishing ground. Information regarding sediment distribution in the Teluk Bakau waters is limited. Existing studies have only conducted sampling at specific locations, and there have been no reports on the spatial scattering characteristics of the sediment types on the seafloor in this area. The objective of this study is to analyze and map the acoustic backscatter values of each sediment type to obtain a spatial distribution map of sediments in the Teluk Bakau waters. The research was conducted in May 2023, using a survey method with the Simrad EK15 single-beam echosounder acoustic instrument set at a frequency of 200 kHz. Data collection in the field was done using survey lines, and during the acoustic data collection, sediment samples were collected using a sediment grab at five stations. The recorded acoustic data from the seabed were then extracted using EchoView 4.0 software to determine the values of volume backscattering strength (SV). The SV values were utilized to obtain the surface backscattering strength (SS) values, while the sediment samples were analyzed using gradistat 8.0 software. Based on the analysis conducted, Bakau Bay has SV values ranging from -34.00 dB to -38.48 dB. Based on the analysis of the SS values, Bakau Bay is dominated by coarse sand sediments in both the tracking results and sediment sampling, with backscattering values ranging from -16.00 dB to -17.49 dB. Additionally, two sediment types are evenly distributed along the tracking lines medium sand with backscattering values ranging from -17.49 dB to -18.97 dB, and fine sand with backscattering values ranging from -19.26 dB to -20.57 dB, found at a depth of 14-16 meters.

Abstract

Mangrove have a role in the absorption and storage of carbon from the atmosphere, which is stored in the form of biomass and sediment, so that mangroves have enormous potential in mitigation global climate change because they can reduce greenhouse gas emission is carbon. Mangrove store carbon in carbon pools including above ground biomass, below ground biomass, litter or dead wood, and soil. The purpose of this study was to calculate the value of carbon stock and carbon sequestration in mangroves in Pengudang Villages, Teluk Sebong District, Bintan Regency. This research was conducted in September – October 2022, the research method used purposive sampling non-destructive method with allometric model and sediment sampling was carried out at 30 cm intervals until the discovery of humus soil. The result of biomass calculations were then converted into carbon stock values and mangrove carbon sequestration. Data analysis was carried out by calculating biomass, carbon stock value and carbon sequestration in mangroves in Pengudang Villages, Teluk Sebong District, Bintan Regency. The result showed the total biomass value was 498,77 tons/ha, the carbon stock value was 1203,27 tonsC/ha, while the carbon sequestration value was 4412,05 tonsC/ha.

Abstract

The sea brings many benefits for society, especially for a maritime country such as Indonesia. The potential in various sectors is limited only by the willingness of a party to invest in it. One such investment is in learning the knowledge and information that can be gathered from the sea, and even predicting its behavior with enough data. Using a residual LSTM algorithm, we will predict the tidal level in eastern Bintan island, a tropical island on the tip of Malay peninsula. The dataset is acquired from two sensor points in eastern Bintan coast from July 2018 to June 2019 for a span of one year, giving a total of 7,961 data points. The residual LSTM model consists of a residual wrapper with two consecutive LSTM layers and one dense layer. The model is also compared with variations of LSTM and RNN models. The result of the residual LSTM model has an MAE value of 0.1495 cm and an RMSE value of 0.3353 cm, compared to the baseline model’s 1.1148 cm and 1.4107 cm respectively. The model also has an RMSE value improvement of 76.23% compared to the base model.
