Abstract

Lexemic idioms refer to phrases or expressions that possess a distinct meaning that surpasses the literal interpretation of their constituent words. This study examines the lexemic idioms present in the lyrics of songs from Taylor Swift's Evermore album. This study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology, drawing on Makkai's (1972: 135-178) theoretical framework, which categorizes idioms into two distinct types: lexemic and sememic idioms. The concept of lexemic idiom can be classified into six distinct types. The topic of discussion pertains to phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions. Idiomatic expressions... The concept of irreversible binominal idioms is being discussed. The topic under consideration pertains to phrasal compound idioms. Utilizing verb idioms… The objective of this study is to identify and analyze the many types of lexemic idioms included in the lyrics of the record, with the aim of determining their respective meanings. The objective of this analysis is to elucidate the proficient utilization of idiomatic expressions by Taylor Swift in effectively conveying her thematic and emotional intentions, encompassing the realms of love, grief, nostalgia, and hope. The study yielded a total of 95 lexemic idioms, which have been categorized based on their respective types and forms. The distribution of idioms in the given text is as follows: 14 idioms of phrasal verbs (14.74%), 45 idioms of tournure (47.37%), 8 idioms of irreversible binomials (8.42%), 23 idioms of phrasal compounds (24.21%), and 5 idioms incorporating verbs (5.26%). No instances of pseudo-idioms were identified within the song lyrics of Taylor Swift's album evermore. The predominant categories of lexemic idioms in the lyrics of Taylor Swift's songs on the evermore album, when considering the percentage of the entire data, indicate that tournure idioms exhibit the most dominance compared to other types. Furthermore, the study's implications for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pedagogy introduce an innovative approach to teaching, suggesting the integration of popular song lyrics for a more holistic language learning experience. This research not only contributes a fresh perspective to the field of linguistics but also underscores the profound impact of idiomatic expressions on language, culture, and emotion.

The problem of this research was to find out whether using the paraphrasing strategy could improve students' listening skills in the IELTS Listening Section. The aim of the research was to find out whether the paraphrasing strategy was able to improve students' listening skills in the IELTS Listening Section. Students were taught the strategies of paraphrasing in IELTS in which students were required to know the meaning of different words such as synonyms, antonyms, knowledge of grammatical changes in active and passive sentences, changing the type of words they heard, rephrasing the main idea of what they heard, and various other strategies. The research method was class action research that applied four phases, that is: planning, action, observation, and reflection. After two cycles, it can be concluded that there was a significant improvement at the end of the second cycle. The average at the end of the first cycle was 69, while at the end of the second cycle was 81. Qualitative data also supported the increase in the students' abilities in the IELTS Listening section. Students were enthusiastic, motivated, and interested in participating in the two cycles. Abstract

This research is expected to broaden students' perspectives through humor, specifically "puns" or "one-liners." The interpretation of ESL students towards English jokes will be analyzed to understand their comprehension of "wordplay." The objectives of the study are to determine how ESL students interpret puns and to identify the difficulties arising from misinterpretations of puns. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Questionnaires and interviews are used to help understand linguistic difficulties and cultural knowledge, exploring students' cultural understanding by exposing them to the use of wordplay in English. The novelty of this research lies in analyzing puns from the perspective of ESL students in North Sumatra, comprising Batak and Nias ethnic students. The findings indicate that students' interpretations of puns show that most can understand the humor if their vocabulary is strong. They can interpret homonyms effectively. Cultural knowledge plays a crucial role; the broader their experiences in the outside world, the better they can appreciate pun humor. Good metacognitive skills also aid students in interpreting pun humor, evident in how they attempt to understand wordplay. Some students can "understand" the jokes due to their familiarity with the words through prior experiences. The researcher hopes that students' vocabulary can be enhanced so they grasp double meanings in humor better. Students are encouraged to expand their cultural knowledge and metacognitive skills by exposing themselves more to foreign cultures through reading, listening to news, social media, or new experiences.
