Abstract

Abstract

The notion of English as Lingua Franca (ELF) has challenged the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) paradigm, which mainly aimed to attain native-like competence. Generally, ELF-informed teaching promotes creative use of English in a multilingual environment to meet communication needs. It also emphasises intelligibility in ELF spoken communication rather than pursuing standard English only. This study aimed to examine the perceptions of Indonesian pre-service English teachers regarding ELF. Using the sequential explanatory design, this study distributed close-ended questionnaire items to 150 participants in the first stage of data collection, followed by Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with five participants in the second stage. Descriptive statistics and thematic analyses were used to explore the research data quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of this study demonstrated that the participants still favoured the English native-speaker model in teaching English. They believed that students should imitate English native speakers in communication. The findings of the qualitative data analysis, however, showed that their perceptions towards ELF were still constrained by the ideological rankings between native English and other varieties of English. This study suggests that ELF-informed teaching should be introduced and reflected in teacher preparatory programmes, so that it could develop future English teachers’ awareness of the importance of implementing the principles of ELF in the Indonesian educational setting.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of presuppositions found in the speech of the characters in the movie Moana 2 and describe the meaning of presuppositions in the transcript of the movie. The approach used is qualitative research with descriptive method and data analysis technique which includes steps: Organizing and Familiarizing, Coding and Reducing, and Interpreting and Representing. The data of this study are the speech of Moana, Maui, and three other crew members, Kele, Moni, and Loto in the Moana 2 script that contain presumptions. The theory of presumption used is Yule's theory, which includes Existential Presumption, Factive Presumption, Lexical Presumption, Structural Presumption, Non-Factive Presumption, and Counter-Factual Presumption. The results of data analysis show that there are five types of presumption in the movie script, with existential presumption being the most dominant type, which is 44% of the total 34 data. Furthermore, structural presumption is found as much as 23%, followed by factive presumption 15%, lexical presumption 9%, and counterfactual presumption 9%. This research provides an understanding of the use of presupposition in movie speech and its contribution in constructing meaning.

Abstract

Fantasy films often present imaginative storylines that explore the interpretation of magic in the real world. However, viewers frequently struggle to understand the meaning behind the characters' utterances and the actions resulting from these dialogues. This study analyzed the fantasy film Godmothered to explore how the use of magic in the real world generates actions through speech acts in the characters' dialogues. The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the different types of speech acts in the film, as well as their role in character development and thematic expression. Using (Yule, 2022) theory of speech acts, which categorizes speech acts into five types, this qualitative descriptive research focused on two main characters and analyzed their dialogues through the transcript of their conversations. The results revealed that three types of speech acts were most prominent in the film: representative acts (informing, stating, expressing opinions, rejecting, and confessing), expressive acts (requests, expressions of happiness, greetings, anger, offers, warnings, and apologies), and directive acts (requests, expressions of happiness, greetings, anger, offers, warnings, and apologies). This study highlights the significance of speech acts in understanding character dynamics and the thematic structure of fantasy films.

Abstract

This study explores how effective AI chatbots enhance students’ vocabulary skills at Nommensen University in Pematangsiantar. Emphasizing the importance of vocabulary in English education, this study uses qualitative methods, including interviews and student documentation, with 25 participants from a third-semester English Vocabulary class. To analyze the data, the authors apply thematic analysis to identify patterns and themes within the interview responses and a 5-point Likert scale to gauge students’ perceptions. The findings reveal that AI chatbots significantly enhance students’ English vocabulary learning experience. Students not only enjoyed the process but also found it easier to acquire new words, which they eagerly applied in their diary entries and essays. The researchers strongly advocate for English teachers to incorporate AI chatbots into their lessons, as this approach can significantly improve students’ understanding of word meanings. Additionally, they urge future researchers to delve into a wider array of language skills to further enrich the learning journey. Overall, the results indicate that AI positively affects vocabulary improvement among students. Participants were enthusiastic and motivated since the application was new to them. They also recognized its usefulness, allowing them to learn independently anytime and anywhere.
