Abstract

Food waste and food service satisfaction can be used of a good food service management. Nursing homes are an institution that also provides food service. This study aims to identify and analyze the association between food waste and food service satisfaction among older adults in the nursing home in Surabaya, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 63 older adults. The 3x24-hour visual Comstock method was used to identify food waste and food service satisfaction was assessed using a questionnaire adapted from the RFSQ (Resident Foodservice Satisfaction Questionnaire) and FoodEx-LTC (Food Expectations-Long-Term Care). Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using the Chi-square test. The association between food waste and older adults' food service satisfaction is insignificant (p=0.115). The majority of the older adults (71.4%) were satisfied with the food service and the average of food waste was relatively low (≤20%). However, some menus still had >20% leftovers. It is important to investigate older adults' acceptability and preferences of each menu to minimalize food waste. Menu cycle planning needs to be evaluated periodically and well-designed to meet the nutritional needs of the residents.

Abstract

Background:  Ageism negatively impacts older adults’ health, especially in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), where healthcare workers often hold unfavorable views of them. Understanding these perspectives is vital for combating ageism and improving LTCF quality. Yet, comprehensive studies on healthcare workers’ attitudes toward ageism are lacking, hindering targeted interventions. Therefore, grasping their attitudes and behaviors is crucial for addressing ageism in LTCFs and enhancing care for older adults.Purpose: This study aimed to explore healthcare workers’ expectations regarding aging and their perspective on ageism towards older adults in LTCFs.Methods: This study was randomly conducted in sixteen LTCFs across Indonesia’s five largest islands using a cross-sectional study with a comparative descriptive design. Participants included 56 nurses and 173 non-licensed caregivers. Data on aging expectations and ageism perspectives during the COVID-19 pandemic were collected. An online and offline self-administered questionnaires (i.e., participant’s characteristics, the expectations regarding aging survey, ageism perspective in time of the COVID-19 pandemic) were conducted. Differences between nurses and caregivers were analyzed using chi-square and independent t-tests.Results: Altogether, 56 nurses and 173 caregivers (with an average age of 39.9 years) participated in the study. Significant differences were observed between nurses and non-licensed caregivers in their expectations regarding physical health, mental health, and overall expectations regarding aging (p-value = <0.001, <0.001, <0.001, respectively). Non-licensed caregivers had higher mean scores for each item compared to nurses. Whereas, the perspective nurse and non-licensed caregivers were significantly different about older adults being more accessible to being infected with SARS-CoV-2, vulnerable population, prone to severity, easier to expose virus, low income, must isolated (p-value = 0.029, 0.007, 0.010, 0.033, <0.001, <0.001, respectively). The mean score of each item of nurses was higher than non-licensed caregivers. Conclusion: The expectation regarding aging of caregivers was higher than nurses. In line, the nurses’ scores have a lower attitude toward ageism during time COVID-19 pandemic. Exposure to ageism behavior and ageing conditions needs to be done for healthcare workers.

Abstract

Background: As the global population ages, dementia has emerged as a pressing public health issue. Nurses play a pivotal role in dementia care; however, many lack adequate knowledge and confidence. Targeted educational interventions are essential to improve nursing competencies in dementia care. Objective: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of educational interventions in improving nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy in dementia care. Methods: A systematic search was conducted across four databases Scopus, PubMed, ProQuest, and Science Direct following PRISMA guidelines. Studies published between 2020 and 2025 were screened using PICOS criteria and assessed for quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) appraisal tools. Data were synthesized narratively. Results: Ten studies were included, consisting of quasi-experimental, RCT, and qualitative designs. Interventions such as digital games, virtual reality, simulation, mobile learning, and arts-based methods demonstrated improvements in nurses’ knowledge, empathy, and confidence. Three major themes emerged: (1) enhanced knowledge of dementia, (2) improved attitudes and self-efficacy, and (3) deeper emotional engagement and humanistic understanding. Conclusion: Educational interventions particularly interactive and emotionally engaging formats effectively improve dementia-related competencies in nurses. These findings support the integration of innovative, person-centered training methods into nursing education and practice to enhance dementia care.

Abstract

The quality of nursing services in hospitals is related to the assessment of patient and family satisfaction, so supervision is needed to minimize the provision of less-than-optimal nursing services. Supervision is influenced by the emotional condition and intelligence of the supervisor. This research aims to develop a supervision based on emotional intelligence (EI) model for the quality of nursing services. The research consisted of two stages, namely stage 1 using an explanatory survey with a cross sectional approach. The population was 262 nurses at Blambangan Hospital, Banyuwangi Regency, r sample of 168 respondents was obtained through probability sampling with cluster random sampling. Data was collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using Partial Least Square (PLS). Stage 2 research is the preparation of a supervision based on EI module that refers to strategic issues obtained from the results of the first stage research, focus group discussions and expert consultations. There is a significant influence of individual factors (T=8.789), organizational factors (T=4.519), psychological factors (T=13.853), and work factors (T=3.517) on supervision based on EI. There is an influence of individual factors (T=11.703), organizational factors (T=5.012), psychological factors (T=9.008), and work factors (T=6.512) on the quality of nursing services. There is an influence of supervision based on EI (T= 3.224) on the quality of nursing services, as well as the arrangement of supervision based on EI modules to improve the quality of nursing services. The development of supervision based on EI which includes normative, formative and restorative can be an effort by the head of the room or supervisor to improve the quality of nursing services and it is important to pay attention to self-awareness, social awareness, self-management and relationship management.
