Abstract

The objectives of the research are to identify students with English language proficiency issues and to describe the English teachers’ teaching speaking strategies in dealing based on students’ speaking English difficulties. This research used a qualitative method. This research used previous studies, researchers deliberately choose people and locations to discover or comprehend a key phenomenon. The researcher used a case study research. The researcher used a questionnaire and an interview as two study instruments to gather data from the participants. The subjects of this research are Twelve students, from class X there are 6 students and class XI there are 6 students and there are three English teachers of MA Nurhidayah Bontomanai Sapaya Gowa. The teacher strategies in this research are to use group work, base the activities on sample words, and give some instructions or training in discussion skills. The researcher concluded that students’ difficulties were influenced by two aspects, namely psychological aspects and language aspects. They admitted that they had difficulty speaking English for several reasons because students were worried about making mistakes and felt anxious due to a lack of vocabulary, lack of pronunciation, and lack of topic knowledge, sometimes students wanted to try speaking. Hindered by the lack of vocabulary and messy pronunciation on the other hand because the topics discussed cannot be understood students continue to feel insecure and afraid in trying to speak English in class to appear in front of their class by speaking English and the last students do not have the motivation to fix it.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the kinds and functions of teacher talk management used in the English teaching process at SMA Tut Wuri Handayani Makassar. “This study used qualitative research design. The data of this research were observation checklists, interviews and video recordings to support them. The subject of this study was one English teacher who taught in different classes, the classes were from XI MIA and XI IIS. The result of the research found that (1) Teacher talk management used by teacher MJ’s learning process in the classroom is classified into 3 parts of the talk management process, which parts consist of starting the lesson, running the lesson, dan ending the lesson. Starting the lesson were entered the class, everyday greetings, took the register and started something new. Running the lesson was getting down to work, making things clear, sequencing activities, checking progress, and stopping. Ending the lesson was checking the time, setting homework, stopping work, making announcements, saying goodbye and clearing the class. (2) The functions of teacher talk management that were said by the English teacher were conveying information, delivering lessons in a structured way, and managing or arranging communication. In conclusion, the analysis of teacher talk management in the classroom was beneficial for teachers to plan and conduct enhanced learning situations.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the role of TikTok application in helping the 3rd-semester students of FBS Universitas Negeri Makassar to learn English and the perceptions of the 3rd-semester students of FBS Universitas Negeri Makassar regarding the impact and effectiveness of using the TikTok application. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The participants in this study were the third-semester English education students. The data was collected through surveys and interviews. Based on the findings, the participants gave positive perceptions and also the application has a positive role and impact on the development and deepening of the students' English. The data showed that the TikTok application can help students learn English by increasing the students’ vocabulary and improving their pronunciation. The students also feel the impact and effectiveness of the TikTok application on English language learning.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the use of U-Dictionary apps as an alternative strategy to improve students' vocabulary mastery in learning English, and also to determine students’ perceptions of using U-Dictionary Apps. This study adopted the quantitative method and used a pre-experimental approach with a total sample of 68 students, 35 students in the control class and 33 students in the experimental class at SMA Negeri 4 Maros. In this study, data collection was carried out by conducting pre-tests and post-tests. The results of the data analysis showed that the use of U-Dictionary Apps as a learning media can improve students' vocabulary mastery, and students give positive perceptions of the use of U-Dictionary Apps. This can be proven by the t-test value lower than P (0.000 < 0.05) which means that H0 of this study is rejected and H1 is accepted. So, it can be concluded that the use of U-Dictionary Apps can improve students' vocabulary in class XI at SMA Negeri 4 Maros.

Abstract

This research is a mixed research (Quantitative and Qualitative) that aims to determine students' perceptions of reading comprehension difficulties during the transition time of online-offline courses in the English department. The independent variable in this research is various kinds of reading comprehension difficulties, while the dependent variable is English language education students. The population in this research were all English language Education students at Universitas Negeri Makassar class of 2021, while the sample was 42 people from 7 classes, namely classes A, B, C, D, E, Pare-Pare, and Advanced Studies who filled out the questionnaire and 5 of them were interviewed. Research data was obtained by providing questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire data was analyzed using SPSS 26 and the interview data was analyzed using data reduction, data display and conclusions. Based on the results of the questionnaire as quantitative analysis, data obtained from as much as 59.7% of the 100% sample of students experienced difficulties in reading comprehension class and based on the interview as qualitative data, it was stated that the entire sample of students experienced difficulties in reading comprehension class during the transition time of online-offline courses. Apart from that, there are 19 types of reading comprehension difficulties experienced by students and 3 types of reading comprehension difficulties that are most often experienced by students.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out how YouTube is used as an English learning media among students in the second semester and fourth semesters of English Department Students of the Faculty of Languages and Literature, State University of Makassar.  This research used a purposive sampling technique with students in the second semester and students in the fourth semester. The study employed a qualitative method with a case study design. This research used questionnaires and semi-structured interviews as data collection methods. The results showed that students in this study used the YouTube application to learn English by watching content they liked, such as film and animation, music videos, educational, gaming, news, how-to, style, sports, food vloggers, talk shows, and religious content. The ways they learn to use YouTube are various, such as activating the subtitle or transcript feature, reading video titles or descriptions, reading comments, listening to music than looking for words they do not know, noting new vocabulary they hear from speakers, practicing pronunciation, etc. These things help them improve their English skills, specifically listening, enlarging their vocabulary, and increasing their pronunciation knowledge. In addition, YouTube provides fun English content with interesting YouTube features that make students more comfortable and enthusiastic about learning English, this also makes it easier for students to understand the material presented without getting bored. Students also expressed their challenges in using YouTube for learning English, such as inappropriate content, annoying advertisements, internet connection problem, and unavailability of the transcript feature on some videos. Based on the result, it can be concluded that most students of the English Education Study Program use the YouTube application to improve their English language skills and language components by watching English content they like by listening to the speaker, activating the subtitle or transcript feature, and read the title and comments on the video.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the characteristics of Inspiring Teachers in the Spectacles of Students. This research used a quantitative method. The sample in this research were students of class X.1 and XI MIPA 1 Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Barru. This class was selected as participants using cluster random sampling techniques. This research instrument used a questionnaire using Skala Likert techniques to determine the characteristics of Inspiring Teachers. Overall, all students strongly agreed with these characteristics, the highest score was 3.63 and the lowest score was 3, 32. where the average score on each question is above 3.25, which means it falls into the strongly agree category and three characteristics are most often chosen by students, namely 1) inspiring teachers have broad-minded characteristics with the highest score of 3.63. 2) conveying learning in a fun way so that learning in class is not boring with the highest score of 3.61. 3) Inspirational teachers can provide new insights and directed and meaningful learning for students with the highest score of 3.60. Therefore, it can be concluded that the characteristics of inspiring teachers based on experts are highly approved by MAN 1 Barru students.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the students’ perceptions of how YouTube promotes students’ autonomous learning. The researchers applied qualitative descriptive methods to achieve the research objective. The instrument used in the data collection was an interview guideline. The subjects of this research were students in English Education Study Program in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th semesters 2019 to 2021 academic years of Universitas Negeri Makassar. The interview sample was 6 students using the purposive sampling technique. Based on the results of this study, the researchers found that YouTube can promote students’ autonomous learning. YouTube is considered flexible, authentic, and motivating as a media to learn. It also enabled students to have the freedom to control their learning prosses. Nevertheless, students face challenges in using YouTube as a media for independent English learning.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the use of the Board Race Game as an alternative strategy to improve students' vocabulary mastery in learning English. In this study, data collection was carried out by conducting pre-test and post-test. The results of the data analysis showed that the use of the Board Race Game as an alternative strategy can improve students' vocabulary mastery. This can be proven by the t-test value lower than P (0.000 < 0.05) which means that H0 of this study is rejected and H1 is accepted. So, it can be concluded that the use of Board Race Game can improve students' vocabulary in class VIII A at SMPN 4 Sungguminasa.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the role of teachers in teaching English during the pandemic. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The research data were collected through interviews. The subjects of this study were English teachers at SMA Negeri 3 Makassar 3 people who had met the criteria determined by the study. The results of the data analysis found that (1) there were several roles used by teachers in teaching online English classes during the pandemic, among others, the teacher as a facilitator, namely providing explanations and examples described through pictures, the teacher as a driver providing support to students to appreciate student learning efforts in the classroom. Then, the teacher, as a model, reminds us to maintain health and provides the material with enthusiasm and confidence. Motivate students in learning English, and control students in the classroom with the rules given by the teacher (2) there are several media or applications that teachers use in teaching online classes during a pandemic, among others, using learning media through videos and pictures and the applications used are Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Google Classroom.
