Abstract

This  research  aimed  to  describe  the  students’  perceptions  of  how  YouTube  promotes students’ autonomous learning. The researchers applied qualitative descriptive methods to achieve the research objective. The instrument used in the data collection was an interview guideline. The subjects of this research were students in English Education Study Program in the  2nd,  4th,  and  6th  semesters  2019  to  2021  academic  years  of  Universitas  Negeri Makassar.  The  interview  sample  was  6  students  using  the  purposive  sampling  technique. Based on the results of this study, the researchers found that YouTube can promote students’ autonomous learning. YouTube is considered flexible, authentic, and motivating as a media to  learn.  It  also  enabled  students  to  have  the  freedom  to  control  their  learning  prosses. Nevertheless, students face challenges in using YouTube as a media for independent English learning.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a significant correlation between teachers' teaching style and students' learning motivation in learning English at SMPN 27 Makassar. The variables in this study consisted of teachers' teaching style as the independent variable (X) and students' learning motivation as the dependent variable (Y). The population of the study was all VIII-grade students of SMPN 27 Makassar, totaling 313 students, with a research sample of 35 students from class VIII.8 selected using the purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was a Likert scale-based closed questionnaire, each consisting of 15 items for teacher teaching style and 16 items for student learning motivation. The data were analyzed using the Pearson product-moment correlation statistical technique to determine the closeness of the correlation between variables. The results of the analysis show that the calculated r count is 0.587, while the r table at the 5% significance level with N = 35 is 0.344. Because r count (0.587) > r table (0.344), it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between teacher teaching style and student learning motivation. This study concludes that teachers' teaching style has an important role in increasing students' learning motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the English Teachers’ Strategies in Students’ Motivation to Learn English. This research uses qualitative research by using two instruments, namely interviews and observations. The independent variable of this research is ‘English Teacher Strategy’ and the dependent variable of this research is ‘Students’ English Learning Motivation’. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 19 Bulukumba, with the research subject being an English teacher who consists of only one person. This research was carried out twice a week, which consisted of conducting the first interview before making observations, then conducting observations and interviews after making observations. The data collection techniques in this study were the interview process, which was recorded later and observation, which used an observation checklist. The results of the study show that there are English teacher strategies in stimulating students' English learning motivation in class X, including Brainstorming and Using Resources for Receiving and Sending Messages. In addition, this study also explains that there are several factors that influence students' learning motivation, especially in English lessons, where English teachers must be more careful in using and applying strategies in teaching.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the Paragraph Writing course among students of the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The research aims to explore students’ perceptions, usage patterns, and attitudes toward AI-based writing tools, particularly ChatGPT and QuillBot. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four English Department students who reprogrammed the Paragraph Writing course during the 2024–2025 short semester. Thematic analysis revealed that students perceived AI as useful and easy to use, aligning with the constructs of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Students used AI mainly for idea generation, grammar correction, and vocabulary enrichment. While they showed positive attitudes toward AI, they also expressed caution about dependency and ethical use. The findings imply that AI can effectively support writing instruction if guided by pedagogical supervision to ensure critical and ethical application in learning.

Abstract

The increasing use of English in smartphone-based online games opens up opportunities for students to acquire vocabulary through informal learning experiences. This study aims to analyze the influence of smartphone online games on English vocabulary mastery among students at SMK Telkom Makassar, particularly those participating in E-sports extracurricular activities. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with data collection through observation and interviews with students who actively play games such as Mobile Legends, Free Fire, and PUBG. The findings indicate that students spend 5–12 hours per day playing games, and through repeated exposure to game features, including instructions, character skills, system notifications, and player-to-player communication, they acquire new vocabulary contextually, such as loot, revive, spell, lane, and gather. The results confirm that smartphone online games can be a positive tool for vocabulary acquisition through repeated and meaningful language exposure, thus potentially being used as a supporting strategy in the language learning process in schools.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of ChatGPT to assist students in English writing classes, specifically in the Paragraph Writing course at UNM Parangtambung. The objectives of the research are to explore: (1) how ChatGPT supports students in English writing classes, and (2) the impact of using ChatGPT on students’ writing. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews involving one English lecturer and students from class E24 at UNM Parangtambung. The findings reveal that: (1) students use ChatGPT to help generate ideas, construct sentences, and improve efficiency in completing writing tasks; (2) most students acknowledged that ChatGPT facilitates the writing process by providing quick references, enriching vocabulary, and offering feedback; (3) however, students were also aware of ChatGPT’s limitations, such as the use of complex language, occasional inaccuracies, the need for lecturer validation, and ethical concerns regarding student dependence on ChatGPT, which may reduce critical thinking skills and interest in reading. The study concludes that while ChatGPT is considered helpful in addressing writing challenges and enhancing learning motivation, it cannot replace the essential role of lecturers in the teaching and learning process.
