Abstract

Arabica coffee cultivation is limited by altitude, which affects its production. Some farmers in Jember Regency are innovating to grow arabica coffee in the lowland, but the potential for leaf rust disease is quite high. Plant natural resistance can be enhanced by adding minerals formulation (containing silica, iodine, and calcium). This research aimed to determine which phase is more effective for applying mineral formulation that induces plant resistance. The formulation was tested on arabica coffee plants grown at the lowland (460 masl) in Jember Regency on 12 years old (y.o) mature and 1 y.o immature plants. One formulation was dissolved in 14 L of water and applied by foliar feeding. The effect was analyzed using two-way T-test of two samples assuming unequal variances at 95% confidence level to determine the differences. The analysis showed that the plants supplemented with the formulation could increase the variables that supported the natural resistance of plants (both mechanically and through the production of chemical compounds), such as polyphenol content, flavonoids, antioxidant activity, total dissolved protein, vitamin C, reducing sugar, lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, and iodine content in the plant. The response of the formulation application showed that the most resistance variables was better in 1 y.o immature plants than in 12 y.o mature plants. The application of mineral formulation in immature phase will have a better impact on increasing natural resistance, and it has the potential to be used as a supplement for arabica coffee plants cultivated in the lowland.

Abstract

Abstract Kalibarumanis Village is a coffee producing area located in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java Province. Problems related to coffee in the village are conventional coffee drying methods and coffee seeding methods that are not in accordance with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). The objectives of this Community Service Program include implementing appropriate drying technology in the form of a dome Bed Dryer Dome for coffee beans and developing coffee seeds that produce coffee plants with high productivity and superior quality. The program implementation method is carried out in several stages, namely preparation, implementation, and evaluation starting from July to September 2022. The output of the program is the construction of a Bed Dryer Dome which can be used by partners to dry coffee beans after harvest without having to be hindered by environmental conditions. The second output was the achievement of transfer of knowledge in coffee nurseries using seeds from superior clones and the grafting-cutting technique method to increase plant productivity and coffee cherries quality. The implementation of this program is an initial foothold in improving the community's economy through coffee commodities. Furthermore, the implementation team communicates with coffee farmer partners who have a major role in continuing the results of this program in the future during the coffee harvest in the following years. Keywords: kalibarumanis village; coffee; bed dryer dome; quality seeds; quality

Abstract

Abstrak: Keterbatasan lahan menjadi salah satu penghambat terbesar petani dalam usaha budidaya selada hidroponik. Jumlah lubang tanam membatasi produktivitas tanaman. Abstract: Land limitations are one of the biggest obstacles for farmers in hydroponic lettuce cultivation. The number of planting holes limits crop productivity. Intensification of planting holes in hydroponic lettuce cultivation can be achieved by implementing a rejuvenation system. This community service program aims to help hydroponic farmers intensify their land use to increase productivity, thereby increasing farmers' income. The service activity was carried out using the demonstration method and followed by assistance in implementation at the partner's business location. The evaluation was conducted 3 months after the assistance by observing/calculating the lettuce production and farmers' income each month. This activity involved two partners who are young farmers with less than 5 years of experience, namely Hidayah Farm Agro and Satriya Agro in Tegalsari Village, Ambulu District, Jember Regency. A total of 15 people participated in this activity. The results of the activity showed that 73% of participants understood how to implement the rejuvenation system. 53% of participants also understood the importance of using superior seeds. The implementation of the renewal system can optimize production by up to 50% and increase production by 48.25–50.14%. The average monthly productivity of hydroponic lettuce also increased in line with the percentage increase in planting holes, followed by an increase in farmers' income.
