The findings reveal that non-formal English courses have a very good influence on students' foreign language skills. Besides having an impact on their formal school grades, these non-formal courses are also very useful in students' daily lives. In addition, students also really like the teaching methods in non-formal courses that are simple and easy to understand. Therefore, we need to know that the material obtained from informal schools is not enough to develop students' skills. Students need more intensive teaching and additional material to get satisfactory results, such as attending non-formal courses and so on.

Abstract

English language skills are currently considered important as one of the fundamental requirements for continuing an educational career or work. This community service research aims to improve English skills for the younger generation through the Alam Daur Community, a community engaged in literacy in the Central Lombok area. The English Intensive program is implemented online using the Zoom application. The method used was the cooperative learning method, participants were involved in webinar sessions, discussions, conversation simulations, and exercises that were relevant to daily activities and the needs of students. The results of the study showed that the intensive English program carried out for one full month through the zoom platform effectively stimulated children's skills. This could be seen from the post-test results which showed an increase in scores. In addition, other results proved that there was a strong relationship between tutors and participants and a fast exchange of information. Student involvement and motivation as well as increasing teacher capacity were also discussed. In line with Rena Pasick, Wilma Brakefield-Caldwell of Detroit, Michigan, and Edith Parker, this study recommends strong and ongoing collaboration, so that existing changes can be evaluated and treatments can be continuously developed for the institutions and communities involved.

Abstract

Amidst the rapidly evolving global landscape, proficiency in English language skills has become indispensable for accessing information, facilitating effective communication, and engaging in global interactions. This necessity is particularly pronounced for students in Lombok who actively participate in diverse sectors such as agriculture, academia, and trade. Understanding the importance of English proficiency in these contexts, this study explores the communication barriers experienced by students during their learning process. It investigates the underlying factors that impede the development of their speaking skills. The qualitative study involved eighteen participants enrolled in the English Quarantine Al Badriyah (EQAB) Program, with eight selected as primary informants for detailed interviews. Data collection methods included closed-ended questions and semi-structured interviews, which were meticulously transcribed and analysed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The research revealed several significant barriers hindering students’ English-speaking skills, including nervousness, lack of vocabulary, and shyness. Conversely, the study identified motivation factors, positive feedback and agreeable activities as pivotal elements that could effectively enhance students’ speaking proficiency. This study underscores the critical role of English language proficiency in empowering students to overcome barriers and actively participate in global discourse. By addressing these challenges and leveraging supportive factors, educators and stakeholders can better facilitate the development of robust English communication skills among students in diverse educational and professional settings. Keywords: Communication Barriers; Enhancing English; Speaking Skills.

Abstract

Using Google Docs for collaborative writing has grown more important in many locations worldwide. Prior studies have demonstrated that classroom collaboration obstacles stem from team members having disparate proficiency levels with the required platform and challenges faced while implementing collective tasks. This study gathered data from the Scopus database to evaluate the scientific outcomes of articles about using Google Docs in collaborative writing. Scopus indexed a collection of data, A total of 173 selected publications have been collected during the inclusion phase, covering the last decade from 2012 to 2024. Starting at 10 publications in 2012, the number fluctuated slightly in the early years, reaching a low point of 5 in 2015. After 2016, the trend consistently increased, with notable growth after 2018. The publications rose sharply from 14 in 2019 to 25 in 2022, followed by a slight dip to 17 in 2023. In 2024, the number rebounded to 24 publications. Data sources in the form of conferences accounted for 29.49% and journal publications with a total of 70.51%. Overall, the data indicates growing research interest and academic engagement with Google Docs in collaborative writing over time, particularly in recent years. The quantitative study findings reveal a substantial rise in study results on using Google Docs in the United States over the last five years. A descriptive Scopus database and bibliometric review were conducted to find publishing patterns related to Google Docs in collaborative academic research. The entire average number of citations that have been published is calculated using Microsoft Excel technology. The trend of research collaboration utilizing Google Docs for collaborative writing is somewhat restricted, and the study subjects are significantly diverse. This study has several limitations, mainly that data were only selected and filtered from the Scopus database, making our analysis reliant purely on the reliability of the provided input source.
