Abstract

Wasathiyyah Islam is essential in shaping students’ character in Islamic higher education. However, standardized instruments do not assess students’ attitudes toward these values. This study aims to develop a valid and reliable instrument to measure wasathiyyah values among students at the Faculty of Islamic Education and Teaching (FTIK), UIN Salatiga. Using a Research and Development (R&D) design adapted from the Borg and Gall model, the study included item development, expert validation, field testing, and revision. The instrument was tested on 200 students from the Islamic Education and Science Education programs using a Likert scale. Data collection was conducted through surveys. Expert review confirmed content validity, and reliability testing using Cronbach’s Alpha produced a score of α = 0.89, indicating high internal consistency. The values measured: tawasuth (moderation), i’tidal (justice), tasamuh (tolerance), tawazun (balance), syura (deliberation), islah (reform), qudwah (exemplary leadership), muwathanah (citizenship), and musawwah (equality), were theoretically integrated into the instrument. Results showed high student agreement with the values, supporting the instrument’s effectiveness. This tool helps evaluate character education and can inform future research and curriculum development in Islamic higher education.

Abstract

Indonesia, as a multicultural nation with diverse cultures, ethnicities, races, and religions, emphasizes the importance of tolerance and mutual respect among its people to prevent conflicts. One approach to achieving this is by enhancing religious moderation values. In the context of elementary schools and madrasah ibtidaiyah, the Pancasila Education (P5) and Pancasila and Religious Education (P5-PPRA) programs play a central role. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of the P5 and P5-PPRA programs in improving religious moderation. This study employs a quantitative approach with data collection through questionnaires. Respondents consisted of 100 students and 8 teachers at Kanisius and Madrasah Ibtidaiyah during the 2023/2024 academic year. The data were validated and analyzed using the Paired Sample T-test. The analysis results showed a significant value (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant relationship between P5 (at Elementary Schools) and PPRA (in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah) in enhancing religious moderation. The average score of P5 is 74.30, while P5-PPRA is 87.20, with an average difference of 12.91. This indicates that the P5-PPRA program is more effective in strengthening religious moderation in schools. This finding suggests that students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah exhibit higher tolerance and appreciation for diversity compared to students at Kanisius schools. These findings can be utilized by policymakers and educators to improve religious moderation programs by adopting and integrating P5-PPRA elements, thereby creating a more inclusive and tolerant learning environment.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) curricula within Indonesian and Malaysian universities. Specifically, it examines how SDGs are represented in EFL curricula, how EFL lecturers perceive the integration of SDGs, and how they implement SDG-related content in their teaching practices. Drawing on Bronfenbrenners (2000) Ecological Systems Theory (EST), a qualitative narrative inquiry was employed, using document analysis of course outlines, lecture slides, and materials, and assessments, as well as semi-structured interviews with nine EFL lecturers from four universities. Course documents were analyzed using content analysis to examine SDG integration in the curricula, while interview transcripts were thematically analyzed, coded, and mapped onto ESTs microsystem and mesosystem levels. The content analysis of syllabi and course materials showed limited and inconsistent references to SDGs, with few explicit outcomes, activities, or assessments. Microsystem analysis showed all nine lecturers valued integrating SDGs in EFL to build students knowledge, skills, and attitudes; whereas, mesosystem data indicated the SDG implementation was driven mainly by individual initiative, with only sporadic program- or campus-level support. The nine lecturers also reported a mix of course-embedded activities and co-/campus initiatives to integrate SDGs. To move beyond ad hoc efforts, universities should embed the SDGs in learning programs and learning outcomes, provide SDG-ready materials and assessment rubrics, fund professional development, and offer rewards and incentives for supporting consistent integration.

Abstract

This study aims to ascertain the impact of the Active learning method on high-order thinking skills (HOTS) within the realm of Islamic education. Our primary contribution is the comprehensive meta-analysis of various preliminary and university educational studies. Using RStudio, we analyzed the differences in effect sizes, variations, and groups among studies. The findings indicate that the Active learning method significantly enhances HOTS, with the mixed learning method showing the most pronounced effect. We adopted a systematic approach, examining diverse learning methods like genre-based learning and blended learning model. Our research design entailed a meticulous meta-analysis of pre-existing literature rather than primary experimental or survey-based methods. However, we identified high heterogeneity in effect sizes as a limitation, suggesting the need for more nuanced studies in varied contexts. This research underscores educators' need to adapt learning strategies suited for specific educational levels, pointing towards a brighter horizon for tailored pedagogical interventions.

Abstract

Indonesia has diverse ethnic groups, religions, and cultures. This diversity can trigger identity conflicts if not appropriately managed; therefore, a non-extreme understanding is required. One of the obligations of university students is to carry out community service, including efforts to strengthen religious moderation. This community service's purpose is to explore efforts to strengthen religious moderation through the Safari Ramadan activities conducted by the Special Student Activity Unit for the Institute for Quranic Recitation Development and Da'wah (UKMK LPTQ & D) at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang and its implications for the community, the campus, and members of UKMK LPTQ & D. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through interviews and observations, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with students and community members. Based on the findings, the efforts to strengthen religious moderation during the Ramadan Safari activities reached all age groups, including children, adolescents, youth, and adults. These efforts were implemented through various programs, such as religious moderation seminars, religious moderation studies in mosques, religious moderation quiz competitions, and training on religious moderation for adolescents and youth.
