Abstract

Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) peel essential oils are complex metabolites mainly used as natural preservatives. The principal constituents include d-limonene, β-pinene, and terpineol. Moreover, essential oils (EOs) are potentially known volatile and unstable compounds, hence, they require proper packaging techniques, e.g., microencapsulation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the binary methods of lime peel essential oils microencapsulation using complex coacervation. This involves the application of gelatin and sodium alginate coatings under two specific conditions, termed core/coating ratio 1:1.2, with modified stirring and core/coating ratio 1:2.0, with stirring speed of 600 rpm, respectively. The results showed the EOs preparation generated 0.70% yield characterized by good quality, fresh aroma, and pale-yellow coloration. Also, microcapsules delivered 37.06% yield, 39.18% oil content, 31.53% encapsulation efficiency (EE), and less smooth-edged SEM surface under condition I. Meanwhile, condition II demonstrated 51.46% yield, 58.66% oil content, 92.04% encapsulation efficiency (EE), and flat-curved, SEM surface. Furthermore, it was carefully observed condition II produced more superior microcapsules

Abstract

Rice husk ash contains approximately 90-98% dry weight of silica and they have been reported to have several advantages compared to mineral silica. One of these is its application as a filler in ZnO photocatalysts using the sol-gel method. This study was, therefore, conducted to determine the effect of adding rice husk silica to increase the ability of ZnO/SiO2 photocatalyst to reduce chromium concentration. Meanwhile, a previous effort has been made to degrade methylene blue dyes by 89%. This current research involved preparing rice husk charcoal using pyrolysis tubes after which they were extracted to produce silica while ZnO/SiO2 composites were made at a 95/5, 90/10, and 85/15 (w/w) ratio and composite activity test was conducted to determine its ability to reduce chromium concentration from practicum discharge. The SEM-EDS results showed the formation of SiO2 composites in ZnO while 82.6% decrease in total chromium concentration from waste was obtained after 2 hours irradiation with 95/5 composites using ultraviolet radiation.

Abstract

This study aims to optimize the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) electrochemical aptasensor with the Box-Behnken experimental design. ENaC is a protein that plays a role in sodium ion transport in several epithelial tissues and is associated with hypertension. The ENaC protein aptamer is held in place in the electrochemical aptasensor by a modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) of silica-ceria composite (SiO2-CeO2). The unique structure of a silica matrix with high biocompatibility can form composites through a hydrothermal process. The Box-Behnken (BBD) experimental design is an efficient optimization method of factors that affect the experiment at three levels. The FTIR results of the silica-ceria composites were 549.35 cm-1 (Ce-O), 1095.3 cm-1 (Si-O-Si), and 491.28 cm-1 (Si-O). Meanwhile, SPCE/silica-ceria characterized by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) showed an increase in peak current [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- from 3.190 μA to 9.073 μA. Three experimental factors, aptamer concentration, streptavidin incubation time, and aptamer incubation time, were optimized with BBD and obtained at 0.5 μg.mL-1, 30 minutes, and 1 hour. The optimum conditions observed resulted in a selective current response for ENaC protein detection. The optimization results can be applied to aptamer-based ENaC protein detection in samples.
